Hello, my baby boy is 7 weeks old this past Tuesday, today is Thursday. And he makes eye contact but he will frequently gaze pass you, and stare off and up. Then he’ll come back and look at you again and stare directly at you and kick and whole nine yards. He also coos at me, and smiles at siblings. But his head is always turned in different directions during his pass time, Should I be worried. I feel really alarmed at the fact that he likes to stare off at things. My oldest child is on the spectrum. And his lower jaw trembles sometimes, when we pick him up. But mainly when he’s upset and is screaming loudly it quivers. Should I be worried I’ve taken him to pediatricians and gotten second opinion from nurse who says he’s fine. But I’m not sure. Your opinion please.

Thank you for asking for my input. What you described your son doing at 7 weeks is still considered normal for his age. Its reassuring that he does make eye contact, even if it's brief, and smiling at siblings. We still don't expect the baby to have good control until 3 to 4 months, and the lower jaw trembling when the baby cries is still normal. I understand your concern, having another child on the spectrum.

@@JacquelyneMontague each baby develops at their own individual pace. Continue to watch your baby’s development, but don’t have fear about the milestones that the baby is not yet meeting.

My son is 2 months 18 days old. He started making good eye contact even before 2 months mark. He used to gaze for quite long time and around 2 months he started giving big smiles to most of our family members. While giving big smile he would shy away and would look elsewhere. Around 5 days ago all of a sudden he stopped looking at all the faces completely. He started avoiding completely no matter how much i try and if he looked only for a second then either no response or a very faint smile. He started making sounds but very rare and almost inaudible. Today he again improved the eye contact and smiled back but not like he used to. I am worried doc. Could you please tell if this is normal? He is still not grasping or shaking toys. Grasping is there but for a second or two. everything else is fine.

Heena thank you for watching this video. With time it will be more clear if some of this that you describe is because of his personality or a developmental delay. I encourage you to focus your efforts on giving him plenty of play time on his tummy. Also give him opportunities every day to pick up objects and practice holding them. Speak to him face-to-face, sing to him and read books to him. If you suspect that he may not be hearing what you are saying, or continue to have concerns about his development, have him evaluated by his healthcare provider.

Hi Ungalil. Thank you for watching this video. At your son's age we do expect that the baby will make eye contact with you, even if it's for several seconds at a time. I would recommend that you talk to your son's doctor about it, and have him evaluated.

@@snfamily7104 I agree with your doctor, the best thing to do for now is watch how the baby continues to develop. There need to be other abnormal signs before we can entertain that as a possible diagnosis.
