Glad you addressed the playing of 3rds evenly. I was noticing that problem I was having in a piece I'm currently learning. Thank you Paul for offering your educational videos.

This piece is not only incredibly beautiful but just the right level of difficulty to keep me challenged for a long time. This is especially true with respect to the issues addressed in this lesson as it brings me to a new level of awareness of its musicality.

just the amount of detail i was looking for. thank you for providing enough detail to help both the beginner as well as the advanced. i'll definitely be using these videos for future pieces! realize it takes so much more to learn a piece now. almost like having a teacher! great for self teachers!

Unfortunately Mr. Barton seems ignorant of the fact that, when specifically applied to piano music, "con sordini" indicates the use of the soft pedal to "mute" the sound. NOT a prohibition on use of the damper pedal.

My teacher taught me to count one tri plet, one tri plet, then duple, duple for the 2 in 3. It works beautifully.

In Russian music class we call black-and-white keys pushed slightly apart “croaking", this is a deadly sin for a pianist:) Before Debussy I never thought that p, pp, ppp could be that difficult

Paul, "con sordina" doesn't mean to use the sordina pedal, which is the una corda pedal?
@XkannsenX
@XkannsenX 4 жыл бұрын
"con sordina" : just use the left pedal.
@carlhiggs2608
@carlhiggs2608 3 жыл бұрын
That's how I've always interpreted it too. Con sordina/sordini in string and wind playing means 'with mute/mutes', so in pianistic terms I'd say use the una corda or 'soft' pedal alongside the sustaining pedal, to both mute the sound but still add ambient harmonics.

Anyone with a complete understanding of piano music knows that "con sordina" (specifically applied to the piano) is frequently used, as it obviously is here, to mean "with the (so called) soft, or left pedal, as it clearly is intended to mean here by Debussy. Nothing to do with not using the sustaining pedal which is ridiculous in this piece.

Exactly. It seems incredible to me that he should make that very basic mistake. It doesn't make any sense that Debussy would have wanted that begining without pedal.

Demonwhisper You’ll never get those duplets reliably, better to count while learning and take liberties when you fully understand the rhythm.

MrMuffinCake I’ll do my best. The reading of time is difficult for me. But, especially in this piece, the timing makes the song so dramatic.
@mortenrobinson
@mortenrobinson 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspick4123 "But, especially in this piece, the timing makes the song so dramatic." Not if you're sitting there counting while playing it. Then you'll be playing it like a robot. The timing and the dynamics is the creative control that you retain over the composition as the performer, and that's where you can really make it shine. Classical music shouldn't be counted, it's not like dance music with a tight 4-4 drumloop, it should be felt and expressed. Counting is just not useful at all, your mind will be focusing on counting which will leave you with much less headspace for actually working all of this into your muscle memory and get it to be a fluent motion. Just learn the notes and feel and control the time rather than let yourself be tyrannised by the time signature, a metronome or a patronising piano teacher stomping his foot to the beat.
