I review a 2023 Ford F150 with the 2.7L v6 EcoBoost Engine as a heavy duty mechanic. This ecoBoost engine is putting out 325 horsepower and 400lb-ft of torque which is impressive. I talk about engine specs and engine design, fuel economy (mpg), reliability, longevity and how this twin turbo engine can make so much power. I give you 5 benefits of owning this 2.7L EcoBoost engine.
What I Use:
Engine Oil - amzn.to/3sVnAoX
Engine Oil Filter - amzn.to/44Vk3nG
Engine Air Filter - amzn.to/3JMmMVV

Adjustable Pintle hitch mount (2.5" receiver) - amzn.to/3RqHGS3
15 Ton Pintle hitch - amzn.to/45SaCqv
10,000lbs Tie Down Straps - amzn.to/3ZBnxeh

I finally got my hands on the 2.7L ecoboost engine in the ford f150 lineup and boy did it not disappoint. you guys have been telling me for months I needed to review this engine and I was very surprised with how tough ford built this engine.
the first benefit I really liked about this smaller 2.7L ecoboost is how ford intentionally designed this engine to have diesel like internals. with bowl shaped pistons and off set connecting rods. this will add a ton of torque and power on the bottom end of this engine which was very evident when driving this truck.
the second benefit I really like about this engine is how much power it squeezed out of such a small displacement. this ecoboost engine is making the same torque output per liter of displacement as the 3L ecodiesel from ram which is wild. this engine also makes a ton of horsepower per liter of displacement putting the big V8 engine to shame.
the third benefit I like about this engine is the bottom end strength, this engine has a compacted graphite iron block and main caps which is incredibly strong usually only seen in diesel engines.
the fourth thing I like about this engine is the reliability. i am the first skeptic when it comes to newer designs of engines and especially when it comes to forced induction engines like a twin turbo set up but as of now this engine is seemingly extrememly reliable. something I just didnt seem happening.
the fifth benefit thing that I really like is the fuel economy or mpg this engine gets. I took this engine on a fuel economy run and I was very impressed with how much fuel economy it got. but thats for another video!
I hope you guys liked the video!

As a former foundryman, I'm saddened that there were no U.S. foundries capable of casting this graphite iron block and that Ford found it necessary to go to Brazil to get it done. Says a great deal about the strength of our manufacturing base.

They're most likely using the same foundry that VW picked for the EA888 gen3, which also uses a CGI block using tech sourced from a Brazilian company as well. It's a very specialized tech, there isn't enough volume for a US foundry to spin up a foundry specifically to make it for Ford. Brazil has a very strong steelmaking industry, with very good quality.

I have a 2016 2.7 liter 97K miles. Just paid it off last year. I thought hard about "upgrading" to a 3.5. I decided to keep my 2.7 for a while especially since interest rates are so high. I worked at Ford as a tech for a while and I told one of the old timer mechanics; I wish I had a 3.5. He looked at me like I was a moron and said my 2.7 is a way better engine. We had a lot of issues with cam phasers on the 3.5. I found that unless you are towing big toys there isn't much of a reason for the 3.5. I take mine hunting, camping and rip through mud and places I shouldn't go all the time :). 2.7 gets the job done.

I certainly love my 2022 Ford F-150 XLT Super Cab 4x4 with the 2.7 liter twin turbo EcoBoost V6 & 10r80 ten speed automatic transmission! With 3.55 axle gears I routinely get 450+ miles per tank on the "smaller" 23 gal fuel tank on mixed/work driving. I've seen as high as 26 MPG for long distance highway driving which I haven't done alot of which translates to over 500 miles per tank! And Motor Week has tested out the 2nd Gen 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 in a 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat Super Crew Cab 4x4 configuration + gotten 5.7 seconds 0-60 MPH & mid 14 second quarter mile ET's in bone-stock form. Quite amazing for only a 165 CID engine! I also love the fact that this motor can easily run on 87 octane fuel too. I've run Kwik Trip 88 Octane (E-15) fuel with no issues as it's even cheaper in cost compared to 87 octane + one point higher in octane rating. I'll run Kwik Trip 91 octane "non-oxy" fuel whenever I can though. I have an AFE Momentum GT enclosed cold air intake system with "dry" non-oiled synthetic cone filter & an SPD Performance HX-Series 3" stainless steel exhaust system so far. Love my Ford F-150 with this engine!

Been waiting for this review! Can’t wait to see towing video. I ordered my 2022 F150 with the 2.7 and the 3.73 gear ratio. With the correct gear ratio and tow package it’s rated to tow 10,100lbs which is more than enough for a half ton I feel. I tow an 8,500lb camper and it pulls like a freight train especially with premium fuel. It’s beyond impressive. Not only that. When I’m not towing it gets amazing fuel economy for a full size gasoline truck. I averaged 23mpg (10L/100km) from northern NY to south Florida and back at 75mph/120kmh average speeds. And this past summer I went from northern NY to Quebec City Canada and back at 60mph/100kmh speeds and averaged over 26mpg(9L/100km)!

Very nice. I towed a 6500lb trailer 1800 miles across the U.S. and it did quite well. If I remember correctly I would usually lock out 9th/10th, maybe 8th as well. My truck has a weird shake at low rpm under load, that I need to get checked out. I have the 3.55 gear but wish I had the lower set. Is that the payload package that set you up with that gear set? I was basically completely maxed out on payload with a few more things in my truck. Remember to check yours and always use a WDH if towing over 5k

Was hellbent on the 5.0 when I bought my ‘21 new. But after more research and driving some relatives 2.7 I went with it. And I cannot be more pleased with this little engine. All the power you need in these size trucks, phenomenal fuel economy, and built to last. The oil pump wet belt is concerning but only time will tell for that. Also hate the composite oil pan, but I’ve got RCI skid plates to protect that. 55k miles no issues other than an EGR sensor. Also I’m not 100% sure but I believe the 3.5 is a Mazda based engine (much like the 2.0 ecoboost is to the Mazda 2.3) whereas the 2.7 is a fully Ford engineered engine.

A few other important notes about the 2.7 you might have missed. The exhaust headers are integrated on this engine. This means that you get a fast warm up on this engine for better fuel economy and happier turbos. The CGI block in combination with the integrated exhaust headers means this block likes to keep heat. This is good because when the engine is shut down it cools very slowly, and the coolant system is designed to passively flow using that heat energy. This makes sure that your turbos cool down much slower than usual. Also, if you live a cold climate like me, it means that you can leave the engine for a few hours and come back with coolant still somewhat warm for the heater. The "big brother" to this engine IMO isn't the 3.5, its actually the 3.0 found in many Lincoln products and also the new ranger raptor. They are very similar motors, the main difference is the 3.0 is fully aluminum, has larger turbos, and has an increased bore and stroke. For this it makes more horsepower. Almost comparable to the 3.5. Finally, the oil driven wet belt was introduced on the 2018 models and so far from what I've seen seems to be lasting to higher mileage. If thats a worry tho, I would just buy the first gen 2.7 with a conventional setup.

A video comparing the two 2.7L engines (Chevy I4 and Ford V6) in the segment would be interesting. Subaru used offset rods in their 3.6 H6 (EZ36D). The Chevy is a little slower but way more toque and it’s noticeable with a load. The Chevy puts out peak torque around 1500 rpm so it feels more diesel like. Both are great trucks. The ford has 150k miles and it’s still running great. The Chevy is only a year old with 55k miles so time will tell with that one.

I am happy that i chose 2.7 when i purchased it in 2020(2019 model). I purchased it for gas milage but ended up using it for junk removal business couple years after. People who are stuck in big engine and diesel think this 2.7 is not capable but I pull a dump trailer(empty 4k) and pull up to 9k with no problem. And, going on my 4th year with this truck and still happy with my purchase.

I disagree and agree. Ford has great styling, it's very euro inspired but the high end trim levels loose their luster with use and age. As for engineering, sure they have lots of ideas and execute them, but in all honesty from a reliability standpoint, the 3.5 and 2.7 ecoboost do not hold up over time. I've owned both and liked them for city driving with the beach inflatables in the back... bit as a hardened work truck, they can't keep up and I've had numerous failures such as turbos on both engines.... cam phasers on both actually. Extremely cold shutter due to increased oil pressure. In fact, the best Ford I've ever owned was the 2011 Ford ranger with the 2.3l inline 4 with a 5spd. I still own this truck for inner city use. This ranger cost me 15k new in 2011. You can't even compare the new maverick in price and reliability or usefulness. I did drop the Ford big trucks because reliability, shitty dealer service and overall they really just aren't that robust or a food truck. I did go with the RAM 1500 with a 5.7. Yes the 5.7 has issues but as a competent at home mechanic, I can fix those issues. It's not as refined but it's built way more robust and the mechanics make more sense for a work truck.

Both pull my 12' and 16' cargo trailers and do light work on a 600 acre farm, but I use the Ford for almost all of my day-job highway miles covering 7 states. I've experienced very comparable and adequate power from both with regular maintenance; however, all repairs have been surprisingly made to the Toyota, including TWO new fuel pumps and a new alternator, all relatively expensive! Despite the overbuilt cylinder head used on the 22R and 22RE Toyota engine, the Ford 2.3 is iron-over-iron,a design which provides ultimate durability under extreme conditions.. The engine was used for many years after the Pinto was discontinued in Fairmonts, Mustangs, Thunderbird turbo coupes but most commonly in Ranger pickups. I would have a hard time deciding between a 22R/RE equipped Toyota pickup and a 2.3 Ranger The one advantage of the Toyota engine is its timing chain vs belt used on the Ford, but in stock form the Ford is a non-interference engine.

Great explanations of this small displacement, forced induction engine.

I’ve always been a huge advocate for this engine. I bought mine new in 2017 and put almost 100k miles of towing on it and the engine in the truck has always been great. I recently had an issue where the top (ringland) of my number 5 piston broke off and I am now doing an engine replacement in the truck. Although wouldn’t call this a wide spread issue, there is a decent amount of people on the 2.7 page that tell of similar issues with piston failures. I am curious to see as time goes what the cause is of this as well as if we will see more and more of it. I’m not sure if it is a pre detonation issue or a material failure issue contributing to it

Very interesting! I'll have to take a look into that and see what I can come up with. Thank you for the comment!

@@TheGettyAdventuresI look forward to seeing what you find. It seems to be sporadic failures without much rhyme or reason. One thing that does come to mind is a low speed pre ignition condition (LSPI), which does happen to plague some direct injection engines.

I've only done turbos and a 1 chain besides the boost control valve. That's the only major repairs I've seen I like the 3.5 eco boost more just because I'm more familiar. This is my experience as a tech. I don't own one

2.7L is the worst engine ford has ever produced… I know 4 people personally who had these grenade on them under 2 years old well maintained, and that’s a lot for one person to personally know. These are absolutely junk
@SavageEnterprisesLLC
@SavageEnterprisesLLC 5 ай бұрын
@@aaronkellar6583 I think that’s a bit of a stretch to say they are absolute junk. A lot of people have incredibly high mileage on these engines without fault. They had a couple periods with some issues but the over all consensus on these is that they are a reliable platform. Everything built in mass production will have a failure rate.

As amazing as the stock power numbers are for the small displacement, many tuners are extracting close to 500 of torque and 400+ HP with just a tune! And the 2.7 is holding perfectly fine.

That's impressive. Only issue is to find a reputable tuner. Guy at some shop across town likely has no clue what they are dealing with.

Bought a new one in 2016, amazing truck except for the electrical issues. But that had nothing to do with the engine, crazy good fuel mileage and torque was nothing short of amazing.

I'm a powerstroke fan and have had many 6.0. I heard these engines were designed by the powerstroke division. I have a 2015 f150 xcab 2.7 with 235k miles and runs amazing and gets 28-32 mpg hwy which is great in a full size truck.

Funny story, took the wife with me truck shopping a couple years back.. Big no no. Had my eyes on an F150 with the 3.5. Sitting right next to this truck was the exact same truck with the 2.7 and about 3k less. Reluctantly bought the 2.7, so thankfull the wife won that one. I switch it to eco mode on long trips on the highway and can get near 26 mpgs.

I own a 2015 F150 3.5 Ecoboost and like it a lot but will probably go with the 2.7 Ecoboost on my next purchase. I keep hearing so many good things about it. Probably the best base engine of the half-ton truck segment right now. Plus I’d take the Ford 2.7 any day over the base GM 2.7 4-cylinder.

I would take the old 300 ci inline 6 with an aftermarket turbo or supercharger. It will still be running when that joke 2.7 has been ground up and turned into something useful...like railroad iron.

@@paulhunter9613 I dont care what the miserable factory chooses to build and install. If I dont like the engine the factory equips it with , I build my own engine and install it ......because....I CAN, and I have. One of, if not the primary criteria I have for engines is how long the design was in production, and their reputation during that period. Congratulations, you just picked the longest lasting, most durable 6 cylinder engine made, which had a production run (including its 240 ci predecessor using the same design) of 32 years. With some head work and a SINGLE power adder they can easily exceed 400 hp, and build torque at a much lower RPM than the undersized 2.7 due to their long stroke of 3.98 inches. And they are iron-over iron, meaning no dissimilar expansion rates of the head and block. Maybe i will wax upon the merits of the "Pinto" engine....just to bug you...oh wait..I just did that.
