2.7L Ecoboost Valve Cleaning

New direct injection engines create carbon build up on the intake valves. I try to clean mine using some CRC valve cleaner, and some brushes. Hopefully this will allow my truck to run better overall.

Thanks for the great 2.7l videos, not much out there. I have 98k on my 2016 2.7l and just changed the plugs. After I had my truck for about a year I heard about the catch can and installed one at about 30k miles. Your gas mileage seems right for 80MPH but I get much better at 70MPH, I can see 23-25MPG on the flat roads out here on the east coast. Looking forward to your next 2.7 video.

Can confirm the 2.7 will deliver advertised mpg at slower speeds and Florida 0' elevation. Had a Lariat super crew for a couple weeks while my 3.5 was getting service. It delivered great mpg and seemed like it had something to prove everytime I stepped on the gas.

You have a evap system valve on top of your gas tank that gets stuck open. Very common on 2015 2.7l. When it gets stuck in the open position it causes rough idle and sometimes completely stalling out of the vehicle especially right after refuelling. It takes a while for the engine code to come on(4 months for me) when it does it’s a p2450, ford released a TSB on this issue.

That is good to know. It hasn't done it since filling, but if it happens again that will be the next thing I will check.

I had that issue as well. My truck didn't die, but just ran very rough for a day or two. After pulling the code, I replaced the purge valve on top of the engine (driver's side) and cleared the code. No more issues. The part is not terribly expensive either and takes about 15 mins to replace from start to finish.

I’ve used the STP brand one and it’s super easy to do. The hardest part about it is getting the nossle in before the throttle body on the 2.7. I looked in mine with a bore scope before and after and was amazed at the results. I’m going to do it again in about 10k from when I did it last. When you do the STP one it will feel like it’s misfiring some but it will straighten out during the 9 mins

Spraying into the intake like that is an induction service. Somewhere online I had read that Ford doesn’t recommend that service since it can lead to turbo failure. Maybe the increased fuel burns in the exhaust? At 130,000 miles and could probably use the cleaning on my ‘15. It does run fine, so maybe when I do the spark plugs.

I was wondering how big of a pain it was to remove the manifold on my 2.7. Now I know. lol. Im surprised the valves were not very dirty. I expected a lot more carbon build up with that mileage. Im about 100,000 behind you. I think I’ll hold off on the walnut blasting for now since yours didn’t look too bad. Im going to start using the spray every other oil change. Question, did you break anything doing this job? I broke an evap hose with a green clip close to the air box when I did my spark plugs this last weekend. Instead of going to the dealer to buy the entire plastic intake tube, I fixed it myself for like $5. But, it seems like there’s so much fragile small plastic pieces on this motor, things are just bound to snap with a little pressure especially after the plastic has become brittle over the years. I used the intake valve cleaner spray before I did the spark plugs, and after that and the spark plug change the intermittent “rough” idle/“hesitation” went away and I went from 18 MPG average to 21.8 MPG average. Oh I also put a bottle of GUMOUT fuel system cleaner. That prob helped with everything also.

I have 2016 2.7 with close to 190K miles on it and still runs great but kinda wonder what the valves look like since I never tried cleaning them or install a catch can. I change the plugs about every 30 thousand miles whether it needs them or not and change the oil every 3500 miles or so.

I read that you shouldn’t do the chemical cleaning (manual only) because of turbo related issues. Like the pipe cleaner and drill ideas though, definitely better than the brush.

Ima mechanic and judging by them black plugs your coils are not up to par anymore or your af is off for some reason wich means there is a issue of over gassing
