A couple months back I purchased this 2015 ford F150. It has the 2.7L ecoboost with 230,000 miles on it. As there becomes more high mileage ecoboost engines on the road I want to document there reliability.

I have been a parts guy at a Ford dealer for over 20 years. I am currently in the market for a 2.7 truck as well. We have far less issues with the 2.7 than the 3.5. I test drove one for the first time the other day with 150k on it. And wow, techs have told me they are quick, but its extremely impressive for such a small motor! My bro had one, on the highway he would average 28 mpg, but he also drives like our dad lol... Its either a 5.0 or a 2.7 for me, but I would prefer the 2.7 for the mileage.

The 2.7, and the second Gen 3.5, is dual injected so it has the port injection that washes the back of the valves so it prevents carbon build up. Best of both worlds. Many Toyota engines do this as well. Great stuff look forward to future vids. Hope you can get her to 300k!

I hope it gets a little better as it breaks in, but if not, I'll take it. And that torque curve!!! Makes it really hard to do fuel milage runs. I'm a lifelong GM guy but after researching quality, reliability, effeciency, and then test driving, I settled on the F150 and couldn't be happier.

I’m still very impressed! Still all original water pump, turbos, transmission, engine, timing chain(not an issue on the 2018+). I have been running whatever good full synthetic oil is on sale. @@thegarch3293 That's awesome. I almost bought a 2018 F150 with the 3.5 twin turbo. It had the long bed crew cab, no center console-which I prefer, and front heated cloths. Mine has the center shifter and front heated cloth seats. That truck had so much power it was insane. You'll have no issues with your truck. Just don't neglect changing your oil. Especially now that it's winter, if you're idling your engine for 5-15minutes before you leave to work, you're gonna mix the oil with a little tiny bit of fuel, so I would go 3k-5k miles oil changes in winter. Summer time I go 5k to 7k miles. Keep me posted on your truck!

I just hit 100k HARD tuned miles on my 2015 F150 2.7. The only issues I've had is replacing the evap purge solenoid ($75) and the oil pan once because it was leaking. Not bad considering this engine is pushing 475HP with the tune with boost pegging out at 22PSI. I haven't had to manually clean the intake valves yet but I do use CRC GDI cleaner once every 10k miles. These things are damned near indestructible. I've always ran Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic Oil and a Motorcraft oil filter.

It cost me about 160.00 and you will be very surprised how much oil it’ll separate. About 2 oz every 10,000 miles. I highly recommend one because like you said it. That’s a nice truck,still can’t believe you had to pay 19k to get a 230k mile 6-7 year old truck .I always look at the engine hours as well as miles if the cluster has both,and yours does….how many engine hours are on it? That’s a better indicator or what life is left than miles….at work where I’m a mechanic the fleet I maintain we typically get 13000-16000 engine hours out of our GM 6.0 gas engines before the body rots off the frames and we sell them. I have 13 in my fleet and never lost an engine or had a valve cover off, I change our oil w full synthetic Dexos oil every 3000 miles at which time the truck is usually under 10 percent oil life left on the dash. Our trucks idle a lot being highway dept vehicles it’s not unusual to have 5-650 hours on the oil at oil change time..

Your in town mpg will go up in Sport mode. It doesn't make sense, but it does! I own a 2015 F150 XLT 4x4 with a 2.7. The oil pan is probably the only known issue with this engine. Since it is DI only, ('15-'17) a catch can is not a bad idea. But, with your mileage, not sure if the valves might already show heavy carbon build up. Definitely swap the plugs and all fluids if you don't have any previous maintenance records. I recently had to replace the rear pinion seal due to a minor leak. Not a big deal.

Wait, did he just say $5,000 for a timing chain? No part of that engine would be anywhere close to $5,000. That’s essentially the cost of a rebuilt, if not dang close to a brand new engine cost. A timing chain replacement (tensioner(s), chain itself, etc) runs about $1,500 max at any dealer and that’s with a new water pump, coolant, etc. And even that’s high…

different cars react differently... id say be cautious above 150k. probably don't touch at at 250k... best research the vehicle and find out what others have done with success.... but truck transmissions are abused way more so you absolutely should change that filter every 60. or at least never say its a lost cause and never touch it.

@@Mr.Mikey.Holiday it can be a trip sometimes. My one neighbor bought a 2012 3.5 and it would blow all the coil packs at once. It did that a few times. But they bought a 2014 and its at 200k right now as a farm truck. So it's really a gamble.

I work at a ford dealer and Cary is 100% right, the 3.5 trucks are in the shop 3 to 1 compare to the 2,7 , always got a 3.5 in the shop with timing chain issue very seldom do we ever have any trouble with the 2.7 . Same with the coyote it is very seldom in for timing chain issues

Just watched your video on your 2015 Ford F-150 2.7L. Thanks. I'm in the market for the exact same thing. This video was made over a year ago and I did not see a follow-up in your list. Did you sell the truck or just lose interest. Two questions, would you buy this truck again with that many miles on it or was that too many. please comment on any problems you had over the last year with this truck. Thanks again

The number of miles only means something with care. A 125,000 hard miles is worse than 200,000 moderate miles aside from the few that just quit, but its rare. If I ever get another Ford it would be nice to get ab2.7. I'm pretty modest anyway.

The 2.7 is the best engine in the f-150 hands down, but the only thing I don’t like about the 2nd gen 2.7 is that it has a rubber oil pump belt. I’m glad I have the 1st gen with the 6 speed. No issues with my 17 STX 2.7 6 speed 116k.

I Have a 2108 STX 2.7 and at about 75,000 miles had to replace the rear end due to daily towing. Also have a shuddering problem when giving a lot of gas quickly. Check engine flashes then goes off. Ford has no idea. Good truck though still like it.
@bullhead360
@bullhead360 2 жыл бұрын
Your intercooler is probably full of oily residue. The intercooler acts as a catch can. What’s happening when you give it a lot of gas is you’re blowing that crap into your engine causing detonation and knock causing the check engine light. Pull the intercooler and drain it out.

I don't know whether you've pursued a limited slip differential, but you probably already have a locking rear diff if you pull the 4x4 selection knob out. Couple the locking differential with the 4x4 high/low modes and the traction control modes, I doubt you'd see much value from one .

@JohnDiMartino
@JohnDiMartino 2 жыл бұрын
Why would the turbos be replaced? I bet you it’s all original, turbo failures are rare, if it was fleet maintained well, it should be able to go a lot longer. There are 2.7s with 3-400k plus and never been touched .They are a great engine that’s built to last a long time with proper maintenance.

@yousufkan6960 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDiMartino I agree they are very well built engines. I own one. I was just curious to know if the turbos which is what most say is the biggest failure point had been replaced on his since it’s high mileage. So I can get a understanding of how long my own turbos can potentially last.

Thanks for the info I got a 2017 2.7 myself that I got with 80,000 miles I was afraid at the beginning and wanted to trade it for 5.0 but the more videos I see about common problems the better I feel. All vehicles are subject to issues. Once you know about them, you can address them and do the best to prevent. Thanks about the cats can’t I did not know that what helps with the carbon buildup and as far as the issues with the cams and those models they say if you Change the oil more frequently instead of relying on the computer to tell you. A. And as far as the oil pan, leak they have a metal one that I pretty much solve the leaking oil pan issue.

Nice review and thanks! Question... is the 2.7 a 'quiet' engine, and ticks or sewing machine noises or is it more/less dead quiet? Catch-can on the 2.7 for sure... keep those valve backs clean!
