This is nothing personal towards any archaeologists out there. Just my own personal views to show how strongly I feel about how certain people in the world have the right to dig up treasures of the dead yet some of us with a metal detector are not even allowed to dig up treasure in many places which are not graves. One rule for one walk of life and one rule for another. The world and its rules are joke worthy.

I suppose the difference between grave robbing and archaeology is that grave robbing is for personal gain and will only be seen by a small group of individuals where as archaeologists dig it up and usually it is sent to museums for the general public to enjoy and see a taste of previous cultures. Whilst this is not much better than grave robbing at least it helps us better understand and preserve the past even though digging up graves no matter how old is wrong. This doesn't necessarily reflect my views.

so you wouldn't have a problem if they dug your grandmothers grave up to take and preserve a ring off her finger so they could record the history and display it in a local museum?

Deep Digger Dan Aloha Dan! I think these are 2 different things. Something that is 2,800 yrs old is from a time of "Antiquity" (before the middle ages). Archaeologist s & Anthropologists do not have a whole lot of "material" items left from most civilizations, obviously because of time, decay, grave robbers, earth quakes, weather, etc. Grave robbers steal, and melt down or sell for profit the items they find in the grave. Archaeologists see wealth in knowledge, and the knowledge that we humans learn about our cultural past. It was a lot worse about 100 yrs ago, quite often, these treasures were taken out of their country of origin, often never telling the home govts. Now, not only do they go into a museum in that country of origin, often if the find is culturally spectacular, teaching us new things about a civilization or a people that we knew nothing or little of, often many people worldwide get to enjoy this new knowledge through the museum touring their collections.

The problem with just ignoring these finds is this was before written history and even most of that is lost to time. This is the only way to even glimpse how things were that far back. The evidence isn't getting any less degraded over time. To ignore it now is to willingly let what little pieces of ancient history we can find, die forever. I can understand how an archaeologist of all kinds of people, wouldn't be inclined to let that happen.
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
The evidence, as you call it, isn't getting any more degraded either. Gold does not degrade. This isn't about the gold, history or treasure. This is about morality and letting the dead rest in peace with the items their family and friends wished to be placed in the ground with them.

I think it's different because they are trying to learn about these people so they can better document history they are also trying to preserve it as much as possible same thing with their bodies. I can see where you are coming from but they aren't selling this stuff off for personal gain on the black market never to be seen again, I think of it more as working out who these people were and how they lived and died and what their lives we're like. Good video I like this concept. 🙂

But they didn't get permission from the people who put the items there to dig them up. They may not have wanted future generations to learn from their treasure offerings. If they did they would have left them above ground surely. One last thing I'd like to say is....yes....they are doing it for personal gain. They get paid wages to do this. This is their jobs, their income. Thank you for the great input and comment. I'm not having a go at you, I really liked your input. :-)

Deep Digger Dan I can see that too, I think both sides have valid points, Here in the states when someone comes across Native American graves they call out the state archaeologist come out and catalog everything exactly where it was found and when they are done they put it all back just as they found it and then it is a protected site and no one can dig there anymore even if it's on someone's property , if they are going to dig up things I think that is how they should do it. I actually had a friend who this happened to they were clearing trails for riding their 4 wheelers and came across 2 large mounds covered with rocks, they called the local police to come look because they thought they were burial mounds and the police agreed so they called the proper people to come catalog it . Also I'm loving all of the videos I know I've said it before, but I watch all of them you guys are awesome! Keep up the good work ☺️

Personally I simply frown upon things like this because they haven't got the permission of the people who put them there. They were not placed there for someone to dig them up in the future, whether that be a grave robber or an archaeologist. They should be left to do the job they were placed there to do and that is either be a gift to the deceased to see them through their next life or a gift to the gods.

Damn Thiefs , Sorry I Mean Archaeologists
@johnhickey76886 жыл бұрын
I understand what your saying Dan, however, the main difference would be: Robbers recklessly dig for personal profit. They have little or no interest in the history or the archaeological context. More often than not, the finds, which may include gems, gold or other precious items are just sold on to collectors, or worse still, melted down or broken up for monetary value. Robbers are certainly not archaeologists. Not only do we lose the finds themselves, but we also lose the historical context of the grave and the placement of the grave goods. Archaeologists dig carefully and slowly, recording all the context of the grave, not just the items of monetary value. They operate under licence and as such the items will, in most cases end up on display for future generations to view and learn about their ancestral past. I suppose the real question should be: Why are you digging up mounds that we know are graves? The answer is fairly simple. People have robbed graves for financial gain for thousands of years. They do not care about the history or context of the burial. Today the problem has been made worse as we have the equipment and knowledge to discover where these finds are likely to be, and at what depth. Robbers will always be robbers and the history is then lost forever. Is there a right or wrong? The first is essentially robbing graves, The second is robbing graves to secure the historic items for both education and for future generations. They attempt to complete the task before the Robber beats them to it.
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
If the problem is grave robbery then surely the answer is to protect the graves from the robbers, not send in more robbers. The monetary or historical value isnt important here. Surely the respect for the dead is what should be being preserved first and foremost.
@johnhickey76886 жыл бұрын
Yes would be the simple answer. The problem is this is extremely unlikely as it would be nearly impossible to achieve. Your example with the badgers is another good example of the experts having to step in before everything is lost or pilfered.

I don't have a horse in this race, and I love ya Dan. My opinion is that the difference between an archaeologist and a guy with a metal detector is that often I would *assume* that nothing would be cataloged or studied. It's placement etc and the history of the item is lost. I believe the goal of archaeology is science more than it is treasure hunting.

Hello Dan, robbery in ancient times is worst because around the time of the thefts there will have been family, friends or even if a few generations after the death, still people left around to care. It's not, or rather shouldn't be considered theft in modern times simply because so much time has passed that there is nobody left to object and the grave has become considered historic or of historic significance. It may need digging up to record it and to save the treasures for future generations to learn from. I totally understand why you hate the idea of exhumation you wouldn't be human not to feel some sadness even if the person who's grave it is died thousands of years ago, ancestors should be respected and the fact you have respect for that is a credit to you.

Kinda the reason is because they dig stuff up to find out about history and teach that to the world. Good news flash though ;)
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
Why are they digging stuff up to learn about history though? Do they have permission from the dead and their relatives? No. They are making decisions for them because they are all dead and their opinion of their days no longer matters.

Excavation of graves is one of the few ways that we can find out details about our ancient history. I think humanity's present and future are enriched by this information. To get the most information from these excavations it should be performed by trained individuals who properly document the finds and publish the details so that everyone can benefit from the information. When untrained individuals do it valuable information is lost and the motive usually is personal greed. The only one who benefits is the untrained finder. They definitely are " robbers " in the sense that they are robbing all humanity of its rich history when not properly documenting the finds.
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
So archaeologists do not get a wage? They all work for free and live off grass and water? Is historical learning more important than showing respect for the dead? Thank you for your lovely comment. :-)
@TheJeffSnickers6 жыл бұрын
We do get a wage, but it's not measured in the amount of gold we find. Also it's very rare to find gold. It never really happens. These finds are so rare. And the wage is very low by the way. We do it infact for the love of knowledge. But we also have respect. You might not see it as respect, but it's for each individual to decide how we handle it. But I agree, it's a grey area which is still discussed in the scientific community.
@William_Hada6 жыл бұрын
Deep Digger Dan I am for respecting the living. Once you are dead you will not know if someone is disrespecting you or not. I, myself will gladly condone any disturbance of my grave if it helps or benefits future generations in some way. Are organ donors disrespected when their organs are harvested to help the living? Because after I'm dead I am of no use to anyone living and will not be aware of anything after that. I don't understand why you are against Archeologists getting paid for the work they do.

Ok. As an old retired historian & archaeologist, let me explain the difference.... archaeologists excavate such things so they can be preserved and studied by scholars worldwide, and placed in museums for the public to view. It has ZERO to do with the financial value. "Treasure hunters," "relic hunters," and others of that ilk do it purely for what they can sell it for. To hell with the historical importance regarding the culture they came from. An archaeologist, historian, or even a responsible detectorist's first thought when he uncovers something is, "What can we learn from this? What does it tell us?" A "relic hunter" or "treasure hunter's" first thought is, "What's it worth?" There's a vast, huge distance between the two.

It is a controversial moral question. Spirits know they are dead. They are intelligent. They learn, read, see colors, and understand they will never get their bodies back, their bodies will never be repaired, and that the things they had are useless to them. Even if they stood right next to a archaeologist, and watched him pull it out of the ground, they would more than likely be ecstatic, that they got to see something that belonged to them so long ago, one last time. They can't do anything with it, they know that.But to see it again, and remember a time, that is what is priceless, Dan. The memory that item may invoke. Scenario 2) The spirit resides in the pineal gland. Which is why it as worshiped in Egyption times, it is " the eye of RA" cut in half, referred to as "the 3rd eye". Before death, your brain changes frequencies, to gather as much energy as it, can to release your spirit. During this time, you are alert, you more alert than you have ever been in your life, you hear, you smell, but it doesn't last long. Your spirit either has enough energy to get out of the skull, or it didn't, in which case, you ARE the spirit who was buried 2,800 years ago. Darkness, quiet, no light, no friends, no one to talk to, if you are really lucky, I find you. And I become your friend, and you will tell me who you were, what happened, your culture, your people.... Without me, you have nothing, buried in that coffin, Dan. you only EXIST your own thoughts to drive you crazy. I give you a week with yourself, you'll go mad =) No sense of time, alone in the darkness.... One day, a VERY LONG TIME LATER... You hear DIGGING. SOMEONE IS COMING TO LET YOU OUT!!!! THEY HEARD DEEP DIGGER DAN HAS WORLD WAR II RELICS, AND REFUSED TO LET GO OF ANYTHING, SO HE HAD EVERYTHING BURIED WITH HIM. They pull your box out, all the sounds if your precious junk, and all you care about is not getting stuck in any of it. The first time in 2,800 years, you see a light, Dan,they take off the lid and your spirit absorbs all the light it can, as you raise up out of that box, and you are FREE! Do you really give a shit about your rusty junk? Or would you rather go back in the box for another 2,800 years? YOU got out, because they found your box of rusty metals and clad coins worth something. This is the story of millions of spirits. Many were not even buried with their bodies, but trapped in garbage, and thrown away, with no chance of escape.Spirits need energy. WITHOUT ENERGY,THEY ARE TRAPPED. THIS is how it is, Dan. I am the real Grim Reaper. I guide the spirits through the afterlife. And they don't care, ans long as you respect them.
@DiaryofaGrimReaper6 жыл бұрын
Spirits have told me where they buried money, they have even tried to use it if I could help them, I could have it. It is unfortunate, many times a spirit is unhelpable, an I know spirits all over the world.. Time is their keeper, and when a spirit makes a mistake, it is not forgiving. A spirit crossing a busy road will get eaten by a car. It is that simple.

Robbery is for profit, benefiting only the immediate few. And it in the process discards and destroys historical and cultural information. Archaeology on the other hand strives to preserve the past. Which becomes available to and benefits all of mankind. You and I can eventually learn from archaeological finds. When I was in my early twenties I was in my thinking extremely fortunate to be able to see a traveling exhibition that came to my hometown, displayed at the New Orleans Museum of Art in New Orleans ,Louisiana. This wouldn't have happened if the "find" had been robbed. The exhibition was on the road so to speak, while a proper museum was being build to house the exhibit. And certainly some of the admissions fees to the exhibitions at the various museums hosting the tour aided in the building of that future museum. The exhibition I'm speaking of was the Treasures of Tutankhamen which among other objects included the well known gold death mask. I couldn't afford to travel to Egypt to see that exhibit in the museum that now exist, built specifically for that collection.

This is something I absolutely agree with you. Funny how the archaeologists don't see the irony of what they do as compared to grave robbers. I wonder what the archaeologists would say if someone went out and dug up their grand parents (in the name of science)?

Happens. Dude it's a dead body. What ever was human is long gone. I hope you do realize that our grandparents graves will be destroyed at one point or another to have space again for someone new to get buried. All of our graves probably. That doesn't mean that archaeologists don't have respect for the people who they are excavating.
@brynmcavinchey-mills89776 жыл бұрын
Arguably removing the artefacts now is not robbery as they will be correctly documented and made available for research, furthermore the argument would be due to the age of the artefacts and the people they belonged to, it makes the artefacts world heritage artefacts. Meaning they can shed light on human development in the past, which is responsible for shaping society today. Once the artefacts have been documented and appropriately researched there's nothing stopping them being redeposited. Also if the artefacts had been removed in antiquity they would surley have been sold privately and been poorly documented, making it likely that the artefacts wouldn't be in one collection and with all the pieces being intact.

However, my main concern and point lm trying to get across is that nobody, whoever they are, has the right to disturb someones grave unless they left instructions for that to be done whilst they were alive.

Robbers sell treasures for personal gain. Archaeologists record for history and the treasures go to a museum for the public to enjoy.

What about the dead peoples graves they are stealing from? Does it not matter that their graves and bodies are removed? Do they not deserve to rest in peace? Is it more important for the public to enjoy going to museums and seeing skeletons and their grave goods than them being left alone to rest in peace?
@crafty14446 жыл бұрын
Totally agree dano, modern day grave robbing is very kool and trendy and ok if you go to collage and tell each other it's fine if your in a school or your local government to GRAVE ROB. but if you or i do it the unclean majority we will go to prison for a very long time.

Amen Dan. I Agree with your thoughts on the archaeologist if it is cool and old they get the right to do as they please in the name of history of coarse!!!!. But if I go metal detecting in state forest and find a 1950 button or even a penny I am required to turn it into the state ? Even though we the taxpayers own the state forest I have to turn in to their greedy little hands. Just venting. Great video Dan
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
That 1950s button could change history. Its very important that they control you and don't let you feel like you are entitled to do anything which you enjoy. Thank you for your lovely comment. Dan :-)

The way i see it if they left the gold someone else would actually steal it, i hope its actually donated to a local museum not sold. Ultimately i wish they hadn't dug up the graves

This is basically the same deal as the excavation of the Terracotta Army, except that the burial tomb was never unearthed. Since this has gotten much less press that that of the former find, i'm not surprised that the ethics of the Archeologists are less than trustworthy. It is a shame that the gold and jewelry is being made a priority find over other finds, like scripts, or documented information thart might tell how the common day was for a human living in that area. I personally believe that the crisies in the Midle East should be resolved before more damage is done towards the quest for knowledge of the past.
@TheJeffSnickers6 жыл бұрын
What? Gold and jewelry isn't made a priority. In fact it's not common to find it at all. What we usually find are sherds or w.e. Scripts or texts or documented information of any kind is only found in cultures who were able to produce them. Which weren't that many. The problem here is that these finds don't get much attention, but if someone finds gold or something like that it's on the news. It's not the fault of archaeologists, it's the media.

Without archeologists, historical events would be very hard to verify and it would mostly be "he said, she said". Did you form your option from watching Indiana Jones movies? Because those are parodies of archeologists. They don't go treasure hunting, they go information gathering.

I think it is terrible that they dig them up and take away precious things there loved ones sent them on there journey with , I know after 100 years a grave can be reused ( not sure if they bury on top of that and this worries me also as my late Father last person known was from a grave 500 years ago) no archaeologist dug this ground but just another thought , also it is a big can of worms , not heard of that story yet Dan
@wildben6 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with your stand on Robbery, however. Is it classed as Theft if they are dug up and sold on for personal gain. After all it wasn't their property in the first place. Whereas the archaeologists dig them up to learn more about these people and put them on display for others to see. Therefor not for financial gain. Just a thought.
@DeepdiggerdanNet6 жыл бұрын
ALL these archaeological finds ARE sold on to the museums, private collectors, highest bidders or stolen. They do result in financial gain. Archaeologists do not live on grass and water. They buy things in life. How? By being paid to do this.

I've always been on the fence re the ethics of cultural anthropology, i.e. what constitutes grave-robbing & what does not, what situations warrant return of items in museums, universities, & personal collections to the descendants, representative cultures, & modern-day countries from which these artifacts were discovered, removed, or stolen, & the criteria by which such claims should be weighed (& who should be in charge of judging said claims). Tomb-raiding, war-time sacking of museums & universities (whose own artifact claims are often dubious), & archeological digs, are just a few situations resulting in the destruction, hoarding, or sale of contents by/to various entities, each claiming valid rights of ownership. In a perfect world, discovered artifacts could be returned to descendants of the original owners/artisans/cultures involved, but most situations are much more complicated than that; plus, enter government bureaucracy over archeological sites in question, awa organizations sponsoring expeditions, & things become even murkier. If these powerful entities cannot agree upon rights of ownership in matters of such cultural/historical import, who will champion the poor citizen wielding a metal detector in his own backyard or on public property to his/her rights to keep what he/she finds eh? Finders/keepers ain't as simple as it once was, as rules go.

Dan, and what about all the gold the Spanish people did rob from the Inka and Maya that sunk in a ship? They claim it is theirs to the ones that found the stolen gold in the sunken ship. Should it not have been returned to the people that it was stolen from in the first place? I think if you cant bent the rules to that what fits your self the best you are just to honest.

From the perspective of the folks who buried the treasure, there would be no difference between archeologists and common grave robbers. Our society considers the “robbery” to be justified by the noble pursuit of knowledge, but the tomb robbers of old no doubt considered their own theft to be justified as well.
