I lived in BAOR land from 1970-1990( Royal Signals ) the two items you have there with the German phoenectic alphabet on are Field Telephones.. The Key hole as you call it is a place where a crank handle would screw into, its a generator handle turn to ring whoever in on the other end of the field 2 core cable could be a small switchboard or a one to one line to the next trench.. I have metal detected Battle field sites around Kleeve in the past when serving. Machine guns and other weapons were common items we recovered.

Some years ago late 1980s stationed in West Germany based near the German, Dutch Belgium border . On a sports afternnon 3 of us would venter towards Kleeve famous for its WW2 battles and carry out Battlefield detecting. We did well back then Schiemeiser Machine Guns, Ammo, badgers all military gear as used in the 1940s... Wondering which part of Germany were you detecting in?

Dan, just ran across this video. Nicely done. Be advised, though, both the anode (the spoon, in your case) and the cathode (the coin) will bubble, even if things are hooked up correctly. Hydrogen gas will be coming off the cathode, and Oxygen gas will be coming off the anode. Also, since you've used stainless steel for your anode, with enough current, you can create hexavalent chromium in this process, which is so extremely toxic and carcinogenic that it's dangerous to even touch it. As such, it is difficult to dispose of due to the illegality of pouring it down drains or throwing it out in the yard. It's just better to avoid using anything stainless steel if you have other options.
