I am a guitarist who also live in the Caribbean where heavily tribal/african upbeat drum music is played at carnival festivals. I can confirm that what our good brother here is saying is absolutely true. Behavior often is modified, attitudes become relaxed and there is usually increased sexual interest during these events. I thank God for this message and clarity of topic. May His flock be blessed by this message!

@Chephas Luxenberg I totally agree. Too much attention is given to the devil. It is totally true that music is powerful. No one is denying that. But there is such an obsession with the devil and the demonic and the occult. Both you and I are being told we are on the Devil’s side, because we much prefer to speak about Christ than the devil. How crazy is that!

Wow.. thank you for this gold truth. I was a drummer in my church for years but at some point i fed up with the church music which too progressively adopting latest trend of style from time to time (especially disco-like or rock-a-like form), i didn't understand why i lost my interest suddenly. Now i do understand, there are a vast disturbance in mainstream church caused by wrong choice of music. Less study in scripture of Biblical truth but more praise and worship 'music'.

@@williammerrow My point is: What are others afraid to talk about? There is nothing new being presented here, so it is not accurate to say others are afraid to talk about it. Many of us heard this racist Eurocentric White Supremacist point of view, which is actually very similar in its teaching to the Nazi Manifesto of Music which was all about demonising African music and African people. And people don’t subscribe to the “this is nothing against Africa, this is just the truth’; it’s out and out in your face racism! Historically so!

I find a cup of hot cocoa often helps me to go to sleep. Yes, I know it has caffeine in it. Years ago when I was working to help support our 2 young children (& my husband had been in a work related accident & benefits took weeks to kick in, I drank coffee so I could go to sleep on nights I got to stay home. For some reason, caffeine has a reverse effect on me.🤔💐

@@kateburk2168 So I am not the only one who finds it helps me to sleep!! It also helps with bronchial issues. Nevertheless, I do try to stay away from it because it DOES have a negative impact on the mind and limits the ministering of the Holy Spirit.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY:( In reference to certain prescription drugs damaging the frontal lobe of the brain) he mentioned we need to ask our doctor about any possible dangers the prescription drug has/may have on the frontal lobe...well i go to the VA clinic and take a prescription AND HAVE ACTUALLY DONE PERSONAL EXTENSIVE RESEARCH on this prescription. When I mentioned my findings to the doctor i was shocked and somewhat disappointed at how many "DOCTORS" out there don't even care to do honest research on the drugs they prescribe, THAT THEY DO NOT CARE, as all they care about is $$$$

Paganism existed and still exists throughout the world. While I agree that some Africans tribes produced Pagan music, some did not. What kind of music did the Christian Africans produce? “Historically, Ethiopia, and many other parts of black Africa have been bastions of Sabbatarianism. Their isolation, for centuries, from the corrupting influence of Rome has allowed Africans to maintain much spiritual independence. Today, Christianity in general, and Sabbath-keeping in particular, is exploding in sub-Saharan Africa” (Sabbath Roots- The African Connection by Richard Nickels). We cannot leave out the pagans in other parts of the world. What kind of music did they produce? All European music was not spiritually good because not all Europeans were Christians. What about the European pagans? What music did they produce? What system is more pagan than the Catholic system? And what about New Age music? It seems that the Catholic Church has set the standard for sacred music, and we SDAs have swallowed it hook, line, and sinker. The enemy does influence music, but to think that it has its roots only in Africa is a one-sided myth. Take a look at some of the classical music and the lives of those who produce it. We will see that many discrepancies.

He's not breaking down the paganism worldwide, but just giving an overview--when he mentions voodoo that's Jamaica and Haiti.

I agree with you. The pastor implied the music that originally came out of Europe was okay but most of it was not. A good example was Mozart who wrote pieces that celebrated aspects of Freemasonry. Then there is Tsichowski who was a closeted, practicing homosexual. Most of these masters did not fear God and even a weak believer such as I have been finding it more difficult to listen to classical music because, while it is refined, it subtly detracts the mind from the influence of the Holy Spirit. I remember Ellen White's words about the "bewitching music" of the opera but do not recall what book (possibly "Mind, Character And Personality"). What has happened is that the Europeans (primarily the Jesuits in my opinion) have "stolen" and rebranded the voodoo beats while vilifying the Africans - Satan has won both ways, however.

That’s why church’s would play, when I was a child, “Pass Me Not” O Gentle Saviour. Alter call music, trying to reach the feelings, instead of the mind. The music and the words are good, but the motive was wrong because we are to intelligently step into reasoning with God. Mere feelings and words make a huge cowpath of uneducated idiots. There’s lying doctrine in many hymns. Like, life immediately after death, for instance. “I’ll fly away” 🤷🏼‍♀️

So very true. Very few SDA Pastors 'back in the day' when I attended revivals or crusades would instruct the pianist or soloist to stop the music when an altar call was being made. And I too noticed that some hymns have lying doctrines in them.

There is no need for such leeeengthy conference about the topic - this says at least a professional, internationally experienced church musician and teacher from Germany, the Land of Mozart, Schütz, Bach (me). SDAs are supposed to believe in what EGW says as inspired writings. In her writings about music, she is very clear and without twisting her words, what comes out is also crystal clear. The real problem is, that musicians acting in the SDA-church are either uneducated or willing to force their musical wishes as "truth" in the church, because they didnt learned what is the own dynamic of church music. Not an opera, not an orchestra house, not even a music school and much less a band. In front of them, church leaders and members have only feelings to answer to that, mostly like-unlike. They are not informed. This is an ethically very odd thing for musicians to misuse the situation. I wont oppose to the concept that heavenly music in beautiful. I will be soon invited and I rejoice. But the music of the SDA-pionners which EGW is referring too in her comparison was really awful before 1880. Have a look at the first adventist hymnbook. Bad, insignificant melodies in a bad style imitating badly F.J. Haydn. The only thing that could have saved the church music of this time is indeed the unity of spirit in the congregation. Its only end of the XIX century that melodies with "pathos" came out, like the lutheran chorales translated from Catherine Winkworth, or the discovering of anglican-styled tunes like Sandingham... The rest is the commonly heard from anti-rock preachers and is not interesting. If polyrythmic, Mozart (rather an occultist in his religious interests), voodoo or hormons, thats a criticable pseudo-scientific presentation. What can you expect from someone who never heard of musical rethoric, the most important to speak about about this topic. Not even spoken of the horrific face most of today's SDAs would have done hearing King David. Cultural shift. Not twisting EGW words brings this clearly out (the White estate has a compilation): - practice humble hymns singing in schools and present this musical work in visiting houses in your evangelistic work. - congregation singing is the highest form of music (so far the hearts are humble). In consequence, the hymn is the authorized basis of SDA music (but which hymn melodies? ...) and the congregation the center of all preoccupation of the musical plans of the church leaders. Musicians must be chosen in function of fitting in the concept. Instruments are to be used "if suitable" which is never the case in the SDA church (but this could be improved if taking the high standards of interpretation in our time - spoken of classical music technic). I am hard in judging, but lets face: invited people in SDA churches, so far they have some musical culture, will want to flee (the Holy Spirit may retain them, but should our church music fight against the Holy Spirit?).
