I'm glad you mentioned insurance. My brother is a frustrated car collector. He's frustrated in that he doesn't have any collection but wishes he had one, and always keeps banging on about how much X model is selling for $Y and how he could have made money on it. I counter that he'd be taking on a lot of risk, tying up tens of thousands of dollars in one item, which then costs money to register, store, and insure. For some reason none of this seems to get through to him, and he ignores all the costs of keeping a car and only looks at the buy and sell price. What's worse, he looks at the ASKING sell price and never finds out what the car actually sold for. That's just dumb.

Thanks for answering my four questions! I won't disagree with your thoughts about Hummels, unless they have an ironic kitch collectibility for a very short time. Even then the supply would satisfy any joke purchases a hundred-fold. And Beanie Babies, that was just a weird time. For now I'll keep my two paper boxes full of AOL CDs in the garage rafters...just in case...

Shawn: You regularly reference historical documents (which is my wheel-house too), but I can't recall you do a specific video on them. Would be great if you could expand further in video/s on that - perhaps showcasing items in your collection, or talking from your past triumphs and tribulations in this category of collecting, what got you into this space, how the market has fared, etc. It's amongst our oldest categories of collecting, dating back thousands of years. As someone who has always been interested in the past, and an autograph collector, I find this category the most satisfying. 👍

It's really not hard to deduce what he would say. All the modern day vinyls, remasters, limited prints of 1000 with fancy rainbow wax splatter are trash, and you should collect vintage records of musical significance or at least ones that you have an attachment to and enjoy listening to in good condition as long as you're not overpaying.

Hey, Shaun. This may be a question for another QA. I'm curious to know how you keep track of market prices to know when an item should be sold. Good video and insight, as usual. I will give you a note though, about the Statues market. It's something i've been selling for around 15 years at this point, and the collectors are very different than your usual speculators. Statues have always been put out in limited numbers because the market is small... they're expensive and take up a ton of space, and it's not everyone who's OK with having thousands of dollars in comic book character statues displayed at home. the market is fueled by people who love the characters and want to display the statues. So quality and uniqueness really rules this market. lots of statues with only a few hundred ever made are close to worthless and lots of statues made in the thousands go for many times their original MSRP. I never speculated/hoarded the stuff but i've been selling them long enough to understand the product and those buying it. unless you have a real love for them and can see why certain statues are unique and special, you're gonna lose your ass investing in them. I have a few dozen that we kept jsut cause we wanted to display them and they are all extremely valuable today, but that is far from normal. demand for them has many factors: quality, era of character portrayed, what the statue has around the character (is it a museum pose? action pose? comiquette? diorama? so many factors), is there a better/cheaper version of the character available in the same/similar costume? who was the sculptor? (Bowen stuff hasnt been made in years and still has a very loyal following). the edition size rarely factors in to be honest.

Shawn, what do you think about graded G.I.Joe moc figures? Will this memory created by the passionate writers (Hama), artists, and creative marketing forces of the 80s live beyond pop culture status? I have a soft spot for Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, along with the numerous characters/playsets. Although the O-Rings may deteriorate, I'm grateful for the newly released Art Omnibus which summarizes that wonderful speck of my childhood.

Gotta agree with you about statues. They have more than a few things going against them. 1) So far not many have appreciated by that much, if at all. Even the ones that do will barely make you money after selling fees. And it's the rare one that even doubles in value, which won't outmatch the index fund by a long shot. 2) Hard to store, and even if you're displaying them you still have to store the huge boxes. There's a reason more people collect movie posters than movie standees. 3) $100-$500 shipping really limits your buying pool. 4) There's been a huge glut of them lately, which leads to... 5) They can always make a better-looking statue, which can hurt the value of previous editions They can be great to display and enjoy, but that's not what this channel is about :)
@stephenbeer9564

In your opinion is the stock market in a bubble currently? AI hype and anticipation of interest rate drops are fueling the market, still a lot in money markets and cash. Let's switch the question here: If you are buying into an index fund and it is for the long term, ten years or more, does it matter?
