Samaltau is about a young Kazakh who was forcibly recruited by Russia in 1916. He was forced to leave his home country and his elderly parents to go to war (WWI) and does not know what awaits him there as a soldier or how his elderly parents are to manage without him. The instrument in the beginning is called kobyz. It is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s wide spread among Kazakhs. The man who is playing the kobys in Dimash’s performance is the best on this instrument and a very good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like here in Samaltau, Qairan Elim or ÒmirÒter and at the stage performance in Stranger. I love this song. This song is really special. You literally can hear the wind blowing, the storm and the howling of the wolf. Dimash sings this song so emotionally that you can almost sense the fears and worries this young soldier must have felt as he went off to a war that wasn't his. Normally there are no vocal acrobatics in his native songs and I love them a lot. In every of this songs you can hear the great love and devotion to his country and his people. Greetings and love from Germany👋❤️

His absolute powerful and unshakable presence on stage, compared by some to a god of music, sometimes to a prince or king, the energy he absorbs from the Universe, then how he anchors himself to the Earth, his connection with the Divinity, all at a place, it gives him the strength and confidence to "command the audience, to order the orchestra, to order the song", so that everything comes out the way he wants and how Dimash feels, that is unique. All these qualities are only at Dimash, absolutely. The goosebumps and hypnosis induced by Dimash are the characteristics of his concerts and appearance on stage, which are shaped by his endless beauty, sometimes translucent, sometimes sensual, sometimes angelic !!! Dimash is storm, thunder, lightning, sun, rain, smile, but also love and last but not least he is our hope and our daily light, he is our spiritual food when you put your head on the pillow and start dreaming like tomorrow it's a day… !!!!! Dimash has God's kiss on his heart!!!! Dimash's cerebral hemisphere are like the mathematics of song. The precision, the climax of the pieces, the breath control, all are mathematical. Nothing higher, nothing lower. Absolute accuracy !!! Not to mention, he has the number of destiny 7, the number of God. One more proof that Dimash is sent by God in the art of love through song!!!

Background FYI - during the summer of 1916, approximately 270,000 Central Asians-Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tajiks, Turkmen, and Uzbeks-perished at the hands of the Russian army in a revolt that began with resistance to the Tsar's World War I draft. This song is special for the Kazakh people and tells of this sad historical event of Kazakhstan. Dimash has performed this song many times and while this is a great version IMO his up-close, in-studio live-stream to the 2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival is sublime. The instruments that feature are the Kobyz, a two string horse hair “violin”, the Sybyzgy sideblown flute and a rain stick - they imitate the sounds of the steppe, eg, wolves, wind. Samaltau is my favorite folk song that Dimash does. The song is based off a letter from a young soldier in 1916 that is conscripted to a war far away of which none of the Kazaks return. Dimash is a strong supporter of sharing culture especially his, of course. The instrument Dhombra is the long skinny necked guitar seen in other songs but this is the ancient sacred Kobys with 2 strings. The person playing is a master. There is also a flute, chimes, and a rainstick used for giving the windy forlorn mountain vibe. Happy that you did this song. Always gives me goosebumps everytime. 🥰🥰🥰 All the stage work from this Digital Concert in 2021 during the pandemic was top notch. A Ukrainian production company I do believe.❤️🥰🥰 Best wishes from a Canadian Dear🇨🇦

The main instrument, that upright violin looking instrument) is called a Kobyz played by Olzhas Qurmanbek. The lute looking like instrument is called a dombra. And your not a real Kazakh male if you cant play the dombra. Lol. Samaltau is actually means Samal mountain. The stage is amazing and its all digital effects, if you watch the other performances from the digital show you can see some amazing graphics.

SAMALTAU For Dimash, this is the most difficult song to sing, because of the story behind it. Samaltau means Mount Samal. The lyrics are sad because they refer to when in 1916 the Russians recruited young Kazakhs and forced them to fight in World War I. According to the lyrics, a young man who marches towards the battle zone thinks about what awaits him and suffers for what will happen to his parents, who are old and left alone, and who may not return alive. On the way he also thinks that it will be the last time he will see his house and his beautiful mountains. For Dimash, family union and love for it is one of the greatest things, hence the difficulty in interpreting it. The Russian tsar and the recruiters treated us like cattle (they did not feed us, they kept us in unsanitary conditions). Therefore, out of 400,000 (Kazakh) soldiers recruited in the first months, 150,000 died of disease and starvation. They gave us no weapons, they fought with shovels against cannons and rifles. Of the 400,000 Kazakh soldiers, 300,000 conscripted Kazakhs did not return home (the fate of the author of this song is unknown; perhaps he died in that war)- Can I explain the problem of "being a soldier", sir? It is never problematic to "be a soldier" for the Turkish nations. We are men and women we are born legendary soldiers FOR OUR OWN STATES. Russian tsar, forced the Kazakh people into war. There were treaty terms for the nomads and Russia: the nomads paid taxes but had never been soldiers. Tsar, banished them from their grasslands to the deserts before. Their horses and cattle animals were killed. People were starving. And then the Tsar enrolled his sons in the military for World War I. Those Kazakh soldiers had no horses and no weapons. They just dug trenches in difficult conditions. Turkish nomadic warriors are masters of combat on horseback. Tsar intended to insult the Kazakh people in this way. The old people left behind starved to death. These are symbols of all difficult periods in the life of the nation in the epitome of "Samaltau": war, famine, epidemics, poverty... For World War II: Kazakhs were part of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union fought against the nazis. There were already Kazakh soldiers and war heroes in this war. Dimash proudly sings the song "Aliya" for the medal-winning war heroine and sniper Kazakh soldier. Even so, Stalin tyrannized the Kazakh people despite his heroism. He banned Kazakh cultural signs and jailed their poets and teachers and then murdered them. Also Dimash singing "Daididau" for that historical reason. KOBYZ Kobyz is an ancestral instrument, it was used by wise men and referents to ward off evil spirits, formerly its two strings were made with a horse's tail. A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe storyteller Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. Furthermore, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music. The ancient outlook and piety towards its instruments and music was constantly maintained in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing Kobyz. Greetings from Panama.
