Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were supposed to spend just eight days on the ISS, now face an indefinite stay due to technical difficulties with their spacecraft, nicknamed Calypso. In a recent call with journalists, the two astronauts shared their exciting and nerve-wracking experience aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. Their mission, meant to be the final test before regular astronaut missions, has turned into a journey filled with unexpected problems and quick thinking.

I think NASA has demonstrated a very commendable return to "safety first", as compared to the Challenger and Columbia days when they seemed to be toying with risk. Also, I agree it will probably be a SpaceX craft that brings the crew back. The only question remaining is when. I don't know how I'd feel if I were the one looking at being stuck in orbit until February 2025, but I am praying for fortitude to Butch and Suni on a daily basis. Hopefully they won't have to wait as long as predicted, but at least they have company up there and for the time being, are safe and sound! They are reportedly both very spiritual/religious individuals; so, their respective faiths are likely helping them both maintain a positive perspective!

I don't know what kind of Boeing you have, but here in Norway their track record is spotless 🤔 Pretty much every plane flying all day every day here is a Boeing. Except short "hops", which are done with propeller planes. Is it the Netflix documentary which has people so upset at them? That model in the documentary is the most common plane used here.

Boeing should not have received more compensation than SpaceX, as the Crew Dragon had perfect functionality while the Starliner had lots of problems and delays both before and after the launch. Ironic considering Boeing criticized SpaceX's reliability. You can´t lose FIVE RCS thrusters, and yes, some of them got recovered (and not even all of them) but this monumental error put the crew's life at risk. Also, the cancellation of the launch just 3 minutes and 50 seconds prior is just ridiculous. And i know, these projects are not easy, but Boeing had enough funding and more than enough time, especially given the two launch cancellations, wich it seems they didn´t use given the FIVE leaks in the helium supply. Boeing is a mess!

They have reverse engineered space craft they have been flying since the 50's but even with Space Force they still don't want to admit to it. Research Steven Greer and watch his videos. Why the hell did they send them in the first place? They knew there was a problem before it launched. That's really bad business. I wonder how many planes had problems but still are flying to this day. That's scary to think about.

What will they do about muscle atrophy being up there for that long? Are there physical and mental implications for being in space for so long, especially if they don't make it back until Feb 2025.

Nope. they will be OK as all other astronauts who were one year in space , like Scott Kelly the NASA astronaut or Peggy Wilson or the current ISS Commandant the Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko who is now since June this year over more then 1000 days in Space and still in his excellent health and good mood.

Boeing gets some credit here for good design by adding redundant RCS. 28 independent thrusters and im assuming gyroscopes as well (reaction wheels) were the only thing keeping that craft from going off into space Had all the thrusters failed on 1 side, they likely would have to deorbit before entering an uncontrollable spin, and if such thrusters had failed during thrust close to the ISS, everybody on both ships could have died It's a really minor thing that was saved by having extra backups for backups, but this can't happen again, not even in a rush. The ISS has enough supplies to last a little while, and they will have to make it last, but they are trained to do that

There's no reaction wheels. Generally they don't work well for crewed spacecraft, which don't spend long in free flight and need reliable systems with high redundancy. Reaction wheels come out too heavy.

Its not the same Boeing. They merged with Mcdonnel Douglas. Then the entire Boeing leadership got replaced by the Mcdonnel Douglas leadership. Then they moved their HQ so that new leadership didnt have to mingle with lowly engineers. Then they outsourced anything and everything to cut costs. Boeing has lost the ability to design and make stuff, they simply outsoure all that to other companies. Essentially they have become the guy in the middle, like a car dealership.
