I broke my distance per stroke 2.63m using the 2 beat kick. Smashed my 800m 1km and 1500m times in the last month. Love this stroke, thanks for sharing.

I was labeled a sinker by a masters swim coach. I took lessons from coach Mandy and she taught me how to relax my head and neck keep my head down looking to the bottom of the pool. I no longer sink!

i;m an 80 yr.old usms who's been competing for 36 yrs. i was never a 2 beat kicker but i find that teaching that kick to the seniors and adults makes a big difference in their swimming. it slows them down, gets rid of the useless motions of the leg in the 4.6.8. etc. kick pattern. and there is a noticeable smoothness to their stroke. however, a lot of people have trouble coordinating that 2 beat pattern and it does take practice to break the bad habits. i've also seen some videos where the pull and kick happen on the SAME side!!! people are confused but it does not occur on the same side and some videos seem to perpetuate that. i explain to my clients that it is like a baby learning to crawl.walk, it's an alternating motion.

This has been a game changer for me. I didn't gain much top end but I am able to maintain a speed that I initially could only hold for the first 100yds or so.. now my pace is consistent throughout which is awesome!

Excellent analysis, the 2 beat kick is actually quite nuanced and I've struggled with the mechanics of it, this is by far the most useful explanation I've come across

Very good demo. When one hand enters water, the other arm has just started to catch water, and the leg starts to kick from the move of the thigh. When the entering arm is straightened, the pulling arm is about the shoulder position, lower leg kicks down with the slashing power, body begins to rotate with the help of the kick, and the arm pushes with the strength of the body. The timing and coordination of the body is crucial for swimming.

finally, an explanation and demo on the leg, arm sequence. many of my clients have asked....is it right left , right arm or left leg, right arm?? it's like a child learning to walk, crawl first to establish the alternating arm and leg movements. it is nuanced and some people pick it up immediately while others have to think about it.

Hi James, Thanks for this clear instruction. I really struggled learning the 2 beat kick as my natural instinct was to kick on the same side as my stroke. After watching this I was able to put it together in the pool for the first time. It's bit like changing your golf swing, not easy but rewarding when it starts to feel natural.

Shaun Latham yes yes u are right I kept kicking at the same time when my same arm moves forward. Meaning to say when I stretch out my right arm forward I kick down with my right leg which seems to be wrong. Now trying hard to kick off this habit and start to relearn everything

THANK YOU Finally a video which breaks out the mechanics of the entire swimming process. I have been stuck in TI hell for past 7 months due to my faulty stroke. This video explains 2BK very well, but it also highlights the correlation of piercing hand during stroke and body rotation with respect to catch phase in conjunction with the kick. I tuned my stroke after watching this video and after two days I feel like I can at last progress to TI nirvana. Eagerly waiting for the breathing video.

Brilliant vid.... I'm 58 and training for a short course tri ... I'm at national age group standard....(Super Vet).... I'm a runner first and foremost...but love swimming...and the technicalities of it.... Anyway... I found that I was a whole lot quicker with a pull bouy and didn't tire so quickly... Foolishly, I thought this was perfectly normal for ages...and didn't realise it probably indicated a leg / hip / body position problem... So I started looking around and asking what I should and shouldn't be doing...this lead to the 2 beat leg kick..which makes the crawl look really elegent and I was also happy to read more efficient..... I quickly discovered I kicked with my right leg and pulled with my right arm ! So I'm now working on correcting this, it's not easy....the adage of "old dog new tricks" springs to mind.... If you have any other suggestions of how I might work on correcting my kick it would be much appreciated.... Many thanks .... Phil

+Phillip Sargeant In my opinion, it looks like she is pulling with right and kicking with right. I assume this is the same as SPEARING with left and kicking with right. Isn't it?? Thanks

This video so clearly shows the l/r alternation with the arms and legs. Very nice - I find it hard to see in other videos, even the tiswim videos. As soon as I think I've got it, I find myself lapsing back to same-side pull & kick. I'll keep trying now thanks to this! Watching Sun Yang swim doesn't help much either, because he's so amazing and has his own thing going, when he's not using a 6-beat kick.

2BK teaches how to connect the pull to the core rotation...another way of saying whole body swimming. In other words, the arm that spears, subsequently pulls and exits with the rising hip. To try to reverse the kick-pull as James suggests, would mean that when the pull exits, the hip would be in the way. We are not giraffes who walk with same side rear and front leg in sync, we alternate legs and arms when we walk, and we alternate them when we swim. This gives us perfect balance.

tried this 2 beat kick for the first time at the pool yesterday, and i was amazed at the propulsion power it has, and how much more energy efficient it is. i found that i could relax between the kicks and still get a lot of thrust and forward propulsion! i'm in love with this technique now! :)) cheers.

wow. whole lessons on this? Interesting. I swim freestyle like this all the time, ever since I figured out how to swim. I learned at age 42. This kick actually came to me naturally after being able to do 20 lengths non stop. I just relaxed into it as my stamina got better and better.

I have negative buoyancy due to the many years of lifting weights and doing resistance training. I can implement the upper body techniques without any issues, but the lower half is where I have trouble....Recently, I have been using a foam weight between my legs to give my body buoyancy, and it works like a charm. I sail through the water, effortlessly. Some of the TI drills I cannot do because of my buoyancy issue, and my two beat kick application is so inconsistent.

That is a good video. Somehow she gets a lot more propulsion, and goes a lot farther per stroke than I can do. Arm length apparently has nothing to do with it. I am 6'3 my arms are pretty long but cannot get the same distance per stroke that she can

Well, I definitely have a new focal point for my next lap swim. At 00:50, she is just beginning the spear with her left hand, and is still rotated to her right side. It's only once the spear/kick combo happen that she really rotates to the other side. It appears that one needs to stay rotated to one side longer than I am doing. I think I might already be rotating to the other side during the recovery phase. Must pay attention next time in the pool!

I wish you would have just filmed about four strokes without stopping or reversing. That just made me dizzy. Just as I thought I could see the pattern the camera reversed. I never got the feel of the flow.

seems to me her arm in front of the body remains very low for a long time, before paddling. doesn't that create resistance? shouldn't the arm be higher aligned with the body?

CT2507 It does seem a little low but it helps keep the hips high and legs from sinking in the glide. Try it out it helped me.

Hi CT2507 It does not create resistance because my posture is neutral and I travel further per stroke. If I raise my arm up, I would break posture and add a significant amount of resistance. Think of this as I am swimming "down hill " versus " up hill" . - Coach M

Somehow my opposite leg fires first i.e. left leg left spear n right leg right spear, when I try to do the opposite as has been shown, it feels unnatural n legs drop.. any tips?

Probably over thinking it and you are actually kicking on the same side which is stunting the connection. Just let the legs relax :)

I swim differently. I start the kick when i touch surface with a hand. This action causes roll of the body and give me propulsion when I start pull another hand. Pull and thrust of arms are synchronised under surface of water. Swimmer on the movie synchronised kick with maximum faze of the pull and start pull before free hand enter to water. I make a mistake or this is just another way? I hope it is clear despite my poor language skill. Edit: I watched movie several times, so I think that way of swimming gives stronger pull because involved abdominal muscles by kicking.

I find this very interesting. I improved my mile time by about 3 minutes simply by changing my kick from a steady thoughtless kick to an alternating kick/stroke method. I kick with the leg opposite of whichever arm I am spearing. Seems like the opposite to what is in the video. Is kicking and spearing on the same side more effective? I'm curious to try/learn.

Why do you concentrate on the hand that is in front? It does nothing, It just stays in place. When I am swimming I need to think about hand that is actually doing something - making a stroke. So for me it's: Left hand stroke - left leg kick. Right hand stroke - right leg kick Easy to remember and to train. Not "right hand in front, left leg kick"

Because you need to engage your body to move forward and stay in streamline position. So It's better focusing on the leading arm

Really enjoying the 2 beat kick. But struggling a bit to work out the timing of the upbeat part of it. Does the leg come straight back up after the down beat? Do you just let it kinda float back up or actively pull it back up? Any suggestions? Thank you. Great video above.

Hi swimVICE and swimming enthusiasts! I have a question for you... I have been working on my kick and love this video that teaches you when to fire your kick -- however if your kick is your strong point and you don't feel the grab in the water from your pulls -- do you have any advice for that?

Hi Joy! To answer your question as best as possible, is to first understand your perception of "pull”and how this could be the source of your problem. You mentioned above that " you don't feel the grab in the water from your pulls". The term "grab" implies you are using your hand as a physical paddle to pull back. What typically happens when focusing on grabbing the water is that your elbow will drop, the force is generated only from the shoulder, and you lose traction in the water. This is probably why you are feeling weak in this area. In a more extreme example, it is like spinning wheels on ice. There is a lot of movement, however, the energy created is not being used successfully to move you forward. So if your low side arm moves under your body faster than your body travels forward, you are essentially “slipping”. However, you probably feel a lot of resistance but it typically is from the shoulder. Try swimming with closed fists. If you feel extremely awkward in doing so then you know you are “pulling” and dropping your elbow. The catch is not made from the hand alone rather the forearm, core, and lats. Instead, try shifting your focus off of “pull” and think of a “catch” instead. This movement is actually triggered from the core and hips and when timed together with the low side arm, you will start to form a good hold of the water and learn to move past it. Focus on whats moving forward rather than what is moving back. Make streamlining more of a priority and you will find that being balanced and streamlined will benefit you greatly and will help you create the right hold in the water over time. Hello swimvice/coach mandy.. what is streamline and how reduce resistance/drag? I get tired by just swimming 50m long pool 5 lap. How do i improve my swimming so that i dont get tired.

amir khalid streamlining is taking the path of least resistance through the water by actively gliding. There are multiple reasons that can be contributing to your experience right now so without seeing your stroke I can’t analyze your problem accurately. I'm in my 30's and just learned how to swim this past summer, well I'm still learning. After watching this 2BK video it looks like something I want to work on as my free style isn't pretty but at least I won't be a wall flower in the hotel pool when on vacation any more. Sorry I haven't got all the swim terms down but in simple terms it looks to me like what ever side I'm going to use to push the water back on with my arm, I would use the leg on that side also to kick on, so pretty much using my arm/leg on the same side to create thrust while gliding on the opposite side. Is this correct? Right arm, sweeping back and fire the right leg, while I'm semi rolled on my left side, left arm forward and then do the same when it comes time to use the left. Is there any type of cadence or count I can try and use to get the correct rhythm? The video looks like your gliding and effortless without tiring you out.

Im glad you are going to try this out! Think of it in simpler terms . Whatever leg kicks down...rotates you on the your OPPOSITE edge :) For example, Kick down with the RIGHT foot rotates you on to your LEFT edge. Just like when your walking . You swing opposite leg with opposite arm forward. Same goes with freestyle. Good luck with your training and I hope my demo is helpful to your own process of discovery :] Happy Laps, Coach Mandy

Beautiful kick. But I think if she want more speed and effeciency she should start with hips leg and not start pulling and then hips. Now the pull comes a little bit late. In addition if she waits a bit and (reamains her arm fully stretched).

In this video the swimmer push the water too hard but It can help to discover the real connection between arm and leg. Once you discover this connection you can push water softer and efficiently and save a lot of energy. Agree with you TI is good for beginners and if you want to improve your 2 beat kick you need to learn other things such as high elbow catch and feel for the water

That is actually false. For a distance event, I sustain a tempo of 1:00 consistently hitting 16 +/- 1 SPL which means my 100 pace time is between 1:20- 1:24 . This video demo is of me swimming at a slow rate so I can demonstrate kick timing. Depending on ones event determines the tempo and SPL one needs to sustain to get the results they want - Coach Mandy

Hi gengar678 he actually has a 4 beat kick and finishes the last 100 M with a powerful 6 beat kick. It all depends on the event and your skill level. I have a new video out on this channel where I go into detail about identifying kick timing. 2 beat kick is great for distance and open water triathlons! - Coach Mandy
