Let's go over some blocking basics. So obviously blocking for punches. I have Chad here who's going to help demo. So again, we're working from a righty against righty stance. So from your basic stance, maybe if a wide right hand comes in I want to cover. Alright, when I cover, I always want to try to think of protecting the whole side of my head. So he throws that wide right hand, alright, I want to wrap the head up and I want to put the bicep right to my temple. And I want to keep the elbow down the center because if it's a straight right hand and I leave that elbow out I can still eat the punch. So just to protect against the straight, I can cover, and against the wide right hand, I can cover. Okay?
Same thing with the hook. If that hook comes in, alright, I want to wrap up the head. This time I'm just going to pivot a little. Alright? Wrap the head up. Remember, don't leave this open because that punch can still sneak through. I want to tighten up the guard as much as I can, or the cover, and as he throws it I want to wrap the head up. So again, against the wide right hand, alright, I'm going to cover. Even against the straight right hand, I'm going to use that cover. When the hook comes in, same concept, wrap the head up. Okay?
So maybe we'll go a little faster. We'll go a left hook, a wide right hand. He'll throw the left hook, wide right hand combination, and when he throws it I just want to wrap the head up and then adjust, keeping my feet based out and my feet under me. I don't want to move my feet too much. I always want to have a good base, especially if I'm defending. So Chad will throw a little faster. Alright? And I wrap up. Again, wrap the head up and always, for defense, focus on your partner's or your opponent's center body. Try not to watch his hands. I want to watch the movements coming from the chest. Okay? Make sure you're wrapping the head up. And that's your basic covering technique for wide punches.

Ducking also works for straight and hook punches. Watch Joe Frazier defense highlights and you will see him get missed by everything Ali through. It wasn't every time, but if he timed it right, it was effective.

i think that it'll probably seem easier to block them this way 'cause you see the wide arms commin toward you. but if they had a smaller silhouette and were to jab maintaining that silhouette, i think that would be harder to block, and i want to see what types of blocks i could use instead, thanks.

Hum theres a difference. I am a martial artist too but I do traditional (forms). I don't do fighting and I have NO applications whatsoever. Though I have learnt in the past weapons through videos ( sai, kali ).. You can learn how to fight but you will lack a lot of different assets. Not just that it will be choppy. However if you have a sparring partner that knows the mechanics a bit better, you should learn some stuff ( shadow boxing too). So don't take everything for granted.

69 wuwei ngl this technique is really meh cause firstly it leaves space for a punch to get through especially with a proper hook in close proximity, which is where the best place to throw a hook is! Secondly you can leave yourself more open by not being sure how far you have to bring your arm up. Thirdly I've never seen a technique leave your body so open for a kick. I find a better thing to do would probably do the helmet guard and just rotate your hips in towards a hook or looping punch, so the hook hits your forearm. Yes it'll probs hurt a bit more but you can easily block other punches then as well and don't leave yourself open.

I actually already knew about the first one where you block the first with your elbow, that is a good blocking technique if you are trained enough to time it right and stuff, I used it a couple of times and the people ended up breaking their hands or fingers.

No, you do not want to end up with you fist behind your head, no way. It's too far back a position for your fist to strike from. Your shoulder could come up to protect your chin and your fist ends up at the side of your head from a position that would be easy to jab from. Remember the fist should have the shortest distance to travel to hit your opponent. But this is a boxer speaking.

I know this was forever ago, but for anyone else questioning this, we have a similar black in kudo. You put your hand back so if they throw an elbow you have the strongest section of your arm forward to defend. Also you would rather them hit your forearm, than to break your hand.
@andrewferris1903
@andrewferris1903 5 жыл бұрын
This isn’t boxing, this is MMA, you can strike from that blocking position with either the elbow or the side of the hand. That said blocking straight punches with the wing block is low percentage and I also prefer the shoulder roll there. The block is more useful vs the lead Hook, where there is no shoulder Roll available and less travel time to react to.

Notice how he tells the guy what punches to throw that way he knows what to block. On a real fight your not going to tell the guy your fighting what punches to throw. If your opponent is fast and know how to throw punches is going to be very hard to do what this guy is saying.
