Thanks for recovering us Jeremy, you were good company for the trip back and felt we were in safe hands. Felt relieved to get back to the pub and drink a few beers. After Mt Dare we limped to Kulgera then the clutch completely died enroute to Alice with another tow for 220k. Jetcor Honda hooked me up with a new clutch and were great thanks to Richard and the team there. Will be back to have another go at it in the next year or so. Take care Jeremy and Isabel and enjoy your great adventure. Hope to see you again.

I was living up the road in finke working at the local school with my wife, and i dont think people understand how rough an remote the road is still they experience it. So many things can go wrong and if you do your checks and look after your vehicle you can be lucky to have a successful trip. "Knock on wood" my Yokohama all terrains never let me down once. Poor Hilux with Bridgestone tyres at least one tyre failed every trip it went on it felt like lol

Good save, Perhaps the Honda CRF was a little small for a desert xing. By the time it is loaded up its a big ask. Probably should have lowered the gearing for the sand. Hind sight is a wonderful thing though.

Nice video. What sandflag would you recommend getting?
@LapsofMapsАй бұрын
Any sand flag that has a base with a pin (not an air fitting.) Bush Ranger or Minewhips is a good option. Another thing to note with sand flags is that they can un-wind on the whoops from the sand dunes, so electrical tape around them fixes that. 👍
@stuartkcalvinАй бұрын
Simpson sand flags must be orange with a luminescent Cross. The flag should (must) be mounted on the driver's side, so oncoming traffic know where the driver's side is.

Interested in your comment about sometimes you might do a couple of tyres. Yes the track from Mt Dare to Dalhousie is rocky but nothing over the top, other than there I struggle to understand how you could do a tyre in the Simpson unless you are going on an off track expedition.
@LapsofMapsАй бұрын
Well, it all depends on the recovery and vehicle loads on the recovery trailer. All it takes is one sharp gibber rock to penetrate the sidewall and there goes a tyre. It's not often at all, but it's just something that has happened unexpectedly in the past.

why did they need recovery when clutch was not really stuffed
@LapsofMapsАй бұрын
The clutch works a lot harder in the soft sand. The clutch had issues for one of the fellas and how the clutch was slipping they wouldn't have made it back. Recoveries could take a few days depending on the work load and whether there is already a recovery underway, so the fellas made the right choice to call and organise one to avoid being stranded out there longer..

Wouldn’t starlink be better than sat phones these days?
@jefftheaussie2225Ай бұрын
I don’t know how he wrecked his clutch but a lot of people think a clutch is some sort of variable speed device. ‘Fanning’ the clutch to avoid going down a gear is a common practice with a lot of bike riders which will shorten the life of a clutch a lot. Riding across the Simpson looks like fun, look after your clutch though, it is a long way. I have ridden dirt bikes for 50 years in all conditions except racing and have never killed a clutch. They were lucky the Champions of Mt Dare were ‘handy’.

How do you charge for a recovery like that? 24 hr recovery would cost a fortune wouldn’t it, surely you don’t do it for love?

@dantunno9264Ай бұрын
@@LapsofMaps nah I don’t think I’ll contact Mt Dare but I think for the sake of the people watching these vids it would give them a bit more insight if we had a ball park/rough idea of the potential costs involved when travelling and breaking down in these remote areas. Does insurance cover these costs or is it just an out of pocket expense or RAA, NRMA?
@LapsofMapsАй бұрын
@@dantunno9264 Unfortunately we have been told that we cannot say the price online, thats out of our control there. For those wishing to prepare and wanting to understand the recovery costs, Mt Dare is the best option to contact. Recoveries can cost in the thousands, but it all depends on where and how far into the desert. Birdsville publicly states they charge $450/h, and they have limited recovery packages for $495. Red centre solutions also offers recovery service. Best to contact insurance directly. Club 4x4 offer off-road recovery insurance from $15k & $30k, but it's out of your pocket then they reimburse you. Not sure what other insurance companies do.
