I crave the feeling of going to a mall in the 90s for holiday shopping lol

I went through a period of reading about malls when I wasn't able to get out of the house. I added Big Mall to my TBR fast as i could. :)

Oh wow! I love the title of the first book! I always met my friends at the fountain haha, in front of the Sanborns, which is a famous restaurant/diner/department-store in México. We’d go every Friday, meet by the fountain, try on clothes without buying them, walk around and watch a movie. Such nostalgia 🥰 Big Mall sounds interesting 🤓 I love those types of essay collections!

Outlet malls and other primarily-outdoor malls continue to be popular in my neck of the woods (central Ohio). I grew up going to traditional indoor malls in both southern NH and southwestern OH.

Definitely looking for Meet Me by the Fountain. I spent a lot of formative hours from a very young age at Northpark Mall in Dallas. I still miss the hanging lifesize Santa with sleigh and reindeer covered with candy and nuts, our own mini-tribute to the Rose Parade. 😃

Olive: this is a very interesting video. Hillsdale Mall was a very new concept here in San Mateo, California. Built in about 1957 or there about. It had the best shops and of course a big Macy’s, Sears, and Emporium. It was originally an open mall,- not closed in. However, later,- closed in with a roof. It went downhill and then stepped right back up improving itself. Macy’s still exists, and many other stores have been added. It has been interesting to watch how it has changed through the years. However, I remember it when… Carol from California.

Very interesting topic - both books made it onto my TBR list. I've read and re-read Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping from Paco Underhill many years ago and found the subject captivating, so I think I'd enjoy both of those books. Thanks for sharing!

There's a very well known children's book called The One and Only Ivan which is set in a (horrible) mall zoo, and which was based on a true story.

Genesee Valley Mall opened in Flint MI in 1970 shortly after I was born. I grew up going to all the shops and it was such a big part of my childhood and teen years. It’s still open although struggling like so many older malls. I’m really excited to read Big Mall.

Love this so much! Crossroads mall in Beckley WV was my go to spot as a teen. If I was lucky I could venture out to Valley View mall in Roanoke VA. That was mainly reserved for back to school shopping and prom dress shopping 🫶🏾

Thanks for this video. Added both books to my TBR. I regularly go to a local mall (in central Connecticut) that sadly is dying a slow death.

Another dead mall north of Pittsburgh that is still open is Beaver Valley Mall. It also happens to be where I met my husband for the very first time when I was 15! Thanks for another great review!

I grew up shopping and working at Southdale Mall in Edina, MN, which was the first fully enclosed mall in the USA. It had a fish pond and large birdcage in the courtyard. I now live closer to the Mall of America, but rarely go to either place. Big Mall sounds like a good read so will check it out.

Hi Jan. I’m from White Bear Lake and we went to the Maplewood Mall. And I don’t blame you one bit for avoiding the Mall of America. I bought a physical copy of Big Mall and I’m looking forward to reading it, after my Victober reads, that is.

Adding Big Mall to my TBR! When I was around 12/13 a friends mom took us on a trip to West Edmonton Mall and it's such a core memory for me. It was one of the first times I remember really feeling like a teenager.

Thanks for reviewing these two Olive! Meet Me by the Fountain has been on my radar since it came out but I haven't gotten to it yet. After hearing your review, I'm going to reserve it from my library. I grew up in the 80s in Cleveland so the Euclid Square Mall (now, sadly, an Amazon distribution center) and the Old Arcade (now, sadly, a hotel) in Downtown Cleveland were "my malls". I spent many hours with my best friend hanging out, browsing the stores, flirting with the boys, and people watching at those malls. As a younger child, my dad took me to Euclid Square Mall regularly for dinner and to play Pac Man & Centipede in the arcade. Such an integral part of my childhood and teen years. 🙂

I loved the first part of the book with the architecture, but she didn’t really talk about it up until the end of the 20th century and the 21st as aesthetically as she did the first 50 years. Or more likely the corporate design nature that they descended into and how kitsch the design aspect became on the same intricate level she looked at all the innovations and regionalism of the earlier ones. I thought your second book might be When Women Ran 5th Avenue, which is new, but of course more about the massive department stores that proceeded the Mall. I’m looking forward to reading that, perhaps for Nonfiction November. I’m also excited about having my Carnegie library card back because I want to read the book on Kaufmanns Department store! Here in Harrisburg, stuck in the middle again, our big mall was the Harrisburg East Mall, which they just started to demolish about a month and a half ago, and I did go take a peak to see what it looked like. On the west shore we have the Camp Hill Mall that when it had a makeover from a 1950s open air mall to enclosed mall added a Boscovs, which before it opened to the public became the shiny new modern store threatening the staid old department store, played by John Wannamakers in Philadelphia, in the Andrew McCarthy movie Mannequin! That mall is a dying mall now, but you can see The Capital City Mall across the way that opened as the west shore alternative to Harrisburg East Mall and is somehow still stumbling along.

I live in Canada and never been to Edmonton so I definitely want to read about the West Edmonton mall. There were no malls in my home town when I was growing up. In fact the first "mall" I can ever remember was a corridor along a street with several shops along that corridor. It was kind of like a covered alley way and may have even started out as an alley, but there were still shops along the main street on both sides. It was not any kind of seperate structure. If I remember rightly it was called The Golden Centre. That was back in 1980. It is now called the Meridian Mall and it has been considerably expanded. It is no longer just one corridor, but the street level floor looks just like a Mall should look. The other thing that comes to mind regarding Malls is the Nickelodeon Cartoon Series called 6Teen. That was about a group of teenagers who were always hanging out at the mall. It was my favourite teen show while my son was in elementary school. I like the sound of the Fountain book as well, even though the mall at my home town had no foodcourt or drinking fountain. I have added both books to my wish list. They do sound interesting.
