Bet that was a lesson for the recruits of how NOT to park. FTO police officers taught rookie PO to wait for the fire companies to arrive and then close the street. Enjoy the circus while it arrived in the municipality I worked in for 20+ years. So many times, FD would wait for police on accidents and serious med calls, yet they magically appear and beat the FD to fires.🤔 We didn't try to beat the cops to shootings and stabbings...

@@liamcragin no, that’s not why, the vehicles were parked in such a way, that feeding the hose through windows would kink the hose even more than it would be trying to go around them. Otherwise, since it’s not a marked NYPD unit, they could have played dumb and nothing would have came of it. Even if it was, I doubt it would have mattered, they probably still would have done it. FDNY ain’t gonna sit around and wait for the cop to come back, to put out a fire. Especially one with an unknown amount of people stuck inside, let alone one with known people stuck inside. They may ram the police cruiser if there’s room, but if not, the NYPD will be down a unit for a few days, because the cop parked like a dingus, and blocked the hydrant.

That was really interesting. Loved seeing the hoses being packed up. Here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand our fire hydrants are inset into the roadside and covered by a bright yellow plaque so, when someone parks over a fire hydrant, they literally park OVER a fire hydrant. It's not only a traffic infringement it's incredibly frustrating sadly, they never seem to get ticketed. Have yet to see what the fire service would do if they needed to access one though. Some other countries have the same style of hydrant but have them in the centre of the road so they can't be parked over which, IMO, is a much better system.

NYC has just never had good enforcement when it comes to illegal cars. Never understood that in my 27 years of living there. First you have a car with no plates, that is an automatic impound. Second a cop placard does not give you the right to park illegally, yet they all do. FDNY, you are so much nicer than I would have been if I had to get to that hydrant.

In my perfect "dream world" fire trucks would come equipped with arms like commercial dump trucks. They pull up to a blocked hydrant and put the arms out... lift the car up and over and dump it (preferably upside down) on the other side. Just drop it from like ten feet in the air on its roof.

I won’t say it’s not an official member, but If you know the right people, anyone can get those department parking permits. I have a few friends of mine from other states that have the same thing in the FDNY version. Non members/buffs/photographers go into the city and park where they want, with the assumption that it will keep them from getting parking fines. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

There should be a sign and law stating if you block a fire hydrant and if there is a fire and your vehicle is blocking the hydrant the fire fighters aren't responsible for damages to your vehicle due to your negligence and your insurance isn't gonna cover the damages

Of all the cities in America you would think NY would be smarter after living through 911. Don't break any windows to run the hoses it might damage the hose. Just get the jaws out and cut the car in half and pull each section out with an engine. Laws the law, NO PARKING, Face the wrath of the NYFD.

I think a TV crew and the city need to have a new season of Parking Wars and call it Hydrant Wars. Start towing them and film the interactions at both the cars, and the impound lot. The city would make money twice over AND the city would be safer.

i was a firefighter for 25 years, the last 12 s an assigned driver, and i prated to have some a**hole parked in front of a hydrant, and have the chief screaming for water. our department policy was to flush the hydrant before using it, maybe in my next life. stay safe out here guys. john

The firefighters are supposed to break the windows to any cars blocking the hydrent. THEN they have some short extension hoses that go thru the car. The extension hoses all leak, filling the car with water. The NYCPD then have the car towed AFTER the fire truck leaves.

Are there bays marked in front of the hydrants, like lines on the road where you know not to park? Or is it a judgement thing trying to guess how far away from the hydrant you should be?

Do Fire trucks inthe USA not have an onboard tank of water to allow them to start trying to knock down the fire while they gt connected to the hydrants ? Fire trucks in the UK and Norway at least have onboard water tanks, and drums with hose that can be run out very quickly to allow initial fire suppresion, while the crew run out the larger bore hoses and connect to a water source to complete the job.
