It’s actually absurd how many fire hydrant tickets that driver has. Most from the same hydrant and going back multiple years… his car should have been impounded already. This also negates any thought that he was unaware that he was parked too close to the hydrant - he has had years (and thousands of dollars) of warnings.

I had to investigate what "Taxpayer" is and will share in case you don't know. When someone owns a parcel of land in the city and wants to keep it for a while as an investment to sell later after prop values go up, they often will tear down whatever structure was there and replace it with something minimal that will generate enough income to pay the minimum property taxes such as a small business on the bottom floor with a residence for the owner on the second floor. These are often poorly constructed because its done on the cheap and can be a fire trap. These are a red flag for firefighters who are very aware of them and therefore give these special attention as we see in this video. That's what I learned hope it helps someone.

@@virgilhilts3924 I think the bulk of the fire was on the second floor spreading from the rear. They were forced to wait until the roof burnt through of the ceiling of the shops collapsed. While the shops had dividing walls, the second floor probably ran the entire length of the terrace. The entire front would have therefore been in danger of collapse without warning. It looked bad to ignore the fire on the first floor, bot there was no way that they could have saved it. Here in the UK, each unit has a continuous dividing wall from ground to roof, so we never see fires spreading sideway.

@FDNYResponseVideos4 ай бұрын
By the time firefighters arrived all of the stores were on fire. They are all contained within one building and share a common cockloft (space between ceiling and roof) and all had a connected rear area. The fire originated in the rear and spanned the entire length of the building involving each business. In short, the building was a total loss prior to fire department arrival.

If you look at the situation. Running the 8" li e through the car windows was stupid, it required two 90 Degree bends causing huge kinks. There is absolutely no reason why with that small car being so low to the ground, he could have easily run the 8" line right up the hood of the car at a nice diagonal gone across the windshield with NO KINKING, THEN just laid the line right across the roof of the csr at a diagonal, ending up right where he needed to be and probably almost at the perfect height off the ground. There would have been no 90 Degree bends. No kinks. The fireman was really being a jerk. He Needlessly wasted a lot of time busting up the car windows.....would have been hooked up and water flowing 2-3 minutes faster without throwing his little hissy fit. Go across the top of the car. This isnˋt real, is it? Please tell me, it is slapstick. The way they put the hose through the car is probably a joke. I last saw something like that with Stan and Ollie. And how they all stand around comfortably like at a party. The only thing missing is the cocktail. Oh no, Marshmallows! And meanwhile the fire gets bigger and bigger. But hey, they punished the owner of the car. Biggest success of the day.

Not gonna lie, I think that it is nesscary to break the car window as if the hose goes around the car rather than in a straight line, the water pressure will be lost, which means the water will come out slower, which may also affect the distance the water can be sprayed. Also the fire truck is very close to the car. If it is placed on the hood, the angle of bending when attached to the fire truck will be too large. So the hose going through the car window is the best solution. In emergencies, only the most optimized solution can be chosen.

Why do firefighters in the US not put water straight on the fire they can see? They are literally standing there watching those buildings burn down 😮 So different from the rest of the world. This isn't having a go at the firefighters. It's a genuine question.
@sicksonethree4 ай бұрын
Because most cities and departments aren't like the FDNY, and it's also why the FDNY are amongst the most respected departments in the world. Most FD's are trained to (for the most part) hit a fire from the outside, push the flames inward to the structure and drown it with water. While this may be safer for firefighters, it increases structural damage and can make things more dangerous to crews or people inside. FDNY, on the other hand, are trained to aggressively attack a fire from the inside of a structure and push it outwards. It's gutsy and more dangerous for the crews, but it has been shown to be effective in putting fires out quicker and with less damage. What you don't see in most videos is the huge host of firefighters fighting the fire from inside the building. There's also the unique structural designs of NYC that play into this ''inside-out'' style of attack. NY being one of the most densely populated cities in the world, full of old tenements, bodegas, dilapidated buildings etc. that you won't find anywhere else in the world (all of which seemingly love to catch fire) plays a big role into how the FDNY fights fires.

Don't worry. These are highly trained firefighters. Noticed how they contained the fire and it didn't spread out more? They aren't just standing around and watching. They are waiting for the strategic planning on how to take the fire out with minimal structural damage. They know what they are doing despite it looking confusing to ordinary people who are not trained or educated in fighting fires.

it may be prudent to consider that the fire videos you see in any given year represent less than .1% of all fires that the FDNY responded to. The vast majority of fire incidents are extinguished quickly, without incident and with no representation on KZbin or the news. The fires that you DO see are the rare exception in which fire conditions have significantly extended throughout hard-to-reach void spaces and have subsequently severely compromised building safety. As is done at every fire, an aggressive interior attack was attempted - for more than 20 minutes in this instance - battling the flames which originated in the rear of the row of interconnected stores. Fire conditions then dictated the transition to an exterior attack. Water was applied long before the video began and to suggest that it wasn’t is blatantly false. Food for thought.

Isn't there an pump inlet on the officers side? Why connect it to the front, just to justify breaking the car windows next to he fire hydrant? The twists in the hose made a good waterflow not possible. So many questions. Why, why why ? Just because you can, and the car was to close to the hydrant?
@xheralt5 ай бұрын
There was an alternative inlet almost directly in line with the hydrant 19:10 , in line with the open space between the bollards marking/protecting the hydrant. They deliberately _chose_ to not use it.

@BRM-dk3tf5 ай бұрын
In this video, you can only see one area at a time. This fire presumably originated in the row of retail stores (side 1). Side 2 was an attached multi-story multi family dwelling. Side 3 was the back side of a row of attached single family dwellings. Side 4 was fenced off. Fires in urban settings sometimes must be attacked from multiple sides, this is one of those times. Initial crews were offensive (hose lines stretched and operating inside the fire building). You can’t see those companies because they are working inside and on top of the buildings. The members that look as if they are standing around are awaiting assignment. At this incident, a critical safety observation was made that the fire building was separating at the masonry joints indicating pending collapse. Command pulled all interior companies out of the fire building and off the roof. They simultaneously had companies trying to access the number 3 side (which had to be done by forcing entry on the private dwellings and advancing lines through them to attack the fire and prevent the homes from burning. Simultaneously, several companies were working in and on the number 2 exposure to check and prevent extension. The strategic change from offensive to defensive required the removal of the ladder trucks and for them to be replaced with tower ladders. Once in position, engine companies had to reposition to supply the tower ladders and the 4 multi-verses (ground based deck guns). There is a period after any strategic change that requires a withdrawal from a fire building for the command to conduct an accountability check and make sure every member is out of the building and accounted for. During that time, it can appear as nothing is happening, but we simply have to account for all the members operating. At the FDNY, there should always be companies visible outside of a working incident. These members are the next to be assigned to a function, and serve as a human shield should the incident suddenly escalate (explosions, collapse, fire growth, and extension). Only the largest fire departments have the staffing and manpower to place that many firemen on scene. Those departments have learned the hard way that not having those members standing by can be catastrophic. I would also add that the vehicle parking on side 1 added to the difficulties. Those vehicles were parked where the defensive members would have operated their hose lines from. That’s not to blame those drivers, those appeared to be legally parked cars in designated parking spots. Remember, fire codes can only go so far. Probably the best example of that is the vehicle that DID park illegally and obstruct one of the hydrants needed during this operation. Hope that helped.

What menu talking mount standing around the firefighters. If so you know nothing about fire fighting. Every one on the fire ground has a job. Even the guys you see standing there. You have relief crews, logistics crews, and most importantly RIT crews. ( rapid intervention team) these firefighters are there just incase there are a firefighters down or trapped. A air bottle only has about 30 to 40 mins of air in it. Once out these firefighters are rotated with new man power. So yes there are alot of ff standing there but they are doing there job.
@davidbott94015 ай бұрын
A lot of those firefighters that are "just standing around" were the guys who were on the roof, or inside BEFORE command ordered the defensive operations due to the the conditions of the building
