The tanks are unnecessary at that point, even though they are close to the fire and smoke they are still out where they can breathe. Im sure theres a tank sitting in the bucket if needed. Other FF will back down the ladder if things get more sketchy. Working on a roof like that with the tank on can sometimes be more dangerous because of low visibility and swinging an axe with weight on your back bouncy around could cause you to be off balance. Just a trade off.

It could be worse if there were no fire stops in-between the wall frames. Fire stopes half way up the wall in each floor and fire stops at the bottom and top of each floor platform. The nature of the fire suggest the fire stops did most of their work well at retarding the spread of the fire inside the walls

Grew up in Cambridge in the 1950's when all the engines and ladders were supplied by Peter Pirsch and all the hose wagons( what are those) were open cab GMC's. Great department then and now.

I think that the minute you start braking windows and adding more fuel to a hidden fire is probably what was going on here. I see a lot of departments going in and busting out windows and fire getting worse be4 it gets better. I’m probably wrong but this is my thinking here.

To be completely honest I think keeping the windows shut actually did a lot to help them on this job. Wind was heavy so opening those up would have likely made this fire get out of hand. I’m pretty sure they had units interior on all floors with lines. I think the bulk of the fire was located under the floorboards on floor 2 which is a hard task to open up.

@@mesofly6969 I hate the wanton taking out of windows too. Always tried to get my guys to analyze the fire and OPEN them whenever possible. It just seems strange no one opened any of them, any where.
