2 illmatics? It's takes like this that really dilute the purity of a conversation. Illmatic is arguably one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time and you're casually saying Lupe has 2? Illmatic isn't just responsible for Nas, it's created an identity for many to follow. add to that, just one line from that album created one of the most memorable hip hop songs ever with, Jay Z's "Dead Presidents" which is a major portion in his own foundation. Lupe has an amazing body of work and 2 classics, but illmatic, they are not.

Go do yourself a favor and listen to "King Nas" start from there. You also butchered the beginning where he got his name & got the Story partially correct. He Got his name "Fiasco" off of "Firm Fiasco" by The Firm. Bottomline his situation with Atlantic lots of it was out of his Hands, and you only speaking on One side of it. Lupe is an idealist. That in itself is the reason why he intentionally makes those intricately coded songs with no regard whether the average listener will get it He cares so much about his idea of what his art should be, that he is scared to let that the business side of making music inform him on his creative process. I truly believe he's making the music he wants now that he is off of a major label. He is fascinated with the idea of being an enigma. Most won't get it but those people that rock with him will and I think he's fine by that. It might not be the move that makes the most business sense but it is what his career has become. I don't think he wants to have a definitive sound anymore which is what confuses most listeners. He is just making art for his enjoyment at this point.
@roscoedash66733 жыл бұрын
That's not what idealism is though. It would be idealistic if Lupe thought his shit was gonna go platinum. But he doesn't - he makes the music he makes knowing that it appeals to him and his fans. Refusing to sell out is not idealism. And it isn't confusing to listeners, most people just aren't checking for his shit. And that's fine with him at this point.
@Unpackaged_Vinyl3 жыл бұрын
@@roscoedash6673Lupe is idealistic in the belief that his lyrical quality supersedes the business side of the industry that suggests "dumbing down" your music will allow exposure to a non hip hop demographic. He's entitled to his approach. I actually respect it because it's like a knight willing to die on his sword but it's principled on an idea of artistic integrity. Nothing wrong with being idealistic but it does restrict the decisions you are willing to make. I can't ever see Lupe making a song about certain subject matter like strip club joints. His principals won't let him do that thus an example of his idealism.
@MakingMovesMajor3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's very hard to put people on Lupe's music because you literally have to listen to 2-3 other songs before I introduce you to another song because they're all coded and connected. Lu could have went pop and made 1000 "Show Goes On" type songs but chose to stay true to the art.

Before lasers there was lupend, which was the last 3 projects that he was going to use to end his career, but alantic at the time would not allow to happen, because Lupe was a hot commodity so they wanted more albums. Lupe felt pressured so he gave them lasers, the label pushed it back and Lupe fell into depression and even contemplated sucide, because he wasn’t able to make music he wanted and was trapped on a label that was telling him this new album he presented them wasn’t going to be put out. So then he had to literally remake lasers and add those pop sounding records which once he gave alantic those records they pushed out the singles and fans protested once Lupe used the fans to help him get the album out but the one we gotten isnt the one we were supposed to get, a stunt in his growth is that he didn’t get to become the artist he desired to be. They wanted more superstar records and less of records Lupe was known for.

Tetsuo and Youth and Drogas Wave are among Lupe's best projects. He doesn't have just two....Any real Hip Hop fan who analyzes his lyrics and actually pay attention will tell you this...
@Portthefirst3 жыл бұрын
While The Cool might be his best album poetically, Drogas Wave and T&Y in my opinion are far better lyrically than everything he has ever put. Like, one is a "normal/reverse listen" album that connects some dots from "MYH Saga" and that contains mindblowing concepts and the other one tells two stories, first half about african slaves (slave ships) and the other one about drugs. It's like Lupe writes "with both sides of the coin" in his mind. He is a master at his craft, one of the best artists that I've witnessed in rap history.

I feel like one of his biggest stunts was having “kick push” as his first single. There are people still to this day that think he was a “skateboard rapper”. He was put in a box early which prevented him from reaching certain fanbases

I was at his Seattle concert after he put out Drogas Light where he ranted about him hating the album he made and only did it as an obligation to Atlantic. Don't know if he really meant what he said though.

I agree with you on Lupe bruh after the cool he was deep but still relatable understandable cuz he had a direction with all his songs. Afterward he just felt super cryptic and hard to vibe with.

Sometimes it's not just about vibing. If we take into account philosophy (the art of thinking) and the music (the art of sound), then Lupe definitely is one of the best rappers out there.

First of all, “City of the Year” is my favorite post-mainstream track from Lupe! That album was pretty dope! The truth is that they wanted Lupe to change into what “sells”, and he was already selling more than most of them.

This is a very solid video and your points stand for Lasers, Food and Liquor 2(these two albums have many great songs tho), DROGAS Light(BAD project no song I love ) and loosies sprinkled in here and there. But DROGAS Wave and T&Y are absolutely classics imo. And he is very melodic on many songs and balances being Lupe while also sounding great. And now with DMIZ the same can be said and this album is even more accessible. I just think you haven’t given those albums their proper due. Which I understand bc it took me almost a year from the release of T&Y to listen bc I had kinda given up on him

Lupe will always be in my top 5, man's has(or those can say HAD...*eye roll*) that IT FACTOR! Lyrically impeccable, versatile as hell, all around great producer. This industry has plenty of examples to show you a career can go ANYWAY at ANYTIME. Things unfortunately happen, but a good artist is a good artist, hands down.

Easy fix that would be a win-win for all involved: An Alchemists produced collaboration album made up of Lupe Fiasco, J.Cole, Joey Bada$$ & Mick Jenkins. Outcome: Masterpiece album. Problem solved. Too easy. Problem with Lupe is that he compromised his musical intergerty for the sake of appealing to a broader audience. He is truly a backpack rapper. Joey Bada$$ went down that same path.

I enjoy the breakdown. I didn't agree with you at 1st but you supported enough of what you had to say to get the point across so I can respect that. We don't get enough of that on the tube. I still believe his penmanship is goat status. I also wonder if he ever wanted the kind of relationships Jay's subtleties afforded him. I also wonder if those things have the same effect coming from Lupe.
@AlejandroRamirez-rx1py3 жыл бұрын
I was first introduced to Lupe through the Fort Minor mixtapes with the track "Be Somebody". Loved his flow and cadence along with the messages he was interpreting to the audience. I loved both his first two albums and the track "Bad B***h" and "Deliver". I feel that with the right team to help guided and nurturing his knowledge he could have flourished. But Atlantic records holding his projects in production hell, the changing of the industry and fan expectations held him back. I think he is underrated but his experimental side on projects after Atlantic kinda messed up his identity and his direction. Still love him and always go back to his earlier work.
