The base model Honda CBR1000RR has manual suspension and the CBR1000RR SP has electronic suspension. That's the only effective difference between the 2. Heres a look at both in the hands of Mr. Moss.

Gotta say, loving the SP2 right now, but would love to see the difference between A1 algorithm vs manual Dave Moss tune, that way I could see how the A1 reacts vs how it should be reacting. Also gotta say, I did a wet track day on the bike after owning it for about a month, only 3k miles on with supercorsa's. No track day trailer, rode to the track and back. The rain modes traction control saved me soooooo many times, I think honda may not be the most in the whp category, but they really made a special bike with handling and its super easy to ride for a new 1000cc owner. Would LOVE to see how the new 2020's are.

Being able to go through screens really helps those who do not like tools. It requires patience and takes a lot longer to get through. The DMT settings serve to essentially create a lot more stability in the forks and shock so the bike is more planted at lean.

I had the honor of you dialing in my 08 CBR1000RR many years ago at Buttonwillow. You made her handle like a dream. Sadly, that bike was totalled by a hit and run driver back in '16. I just picked up a '17 SP but unfortunately, I don't get out to the track much these days. Still, I sure would love to have you dial in my SP one day. Cheers!

I am surprised the Fireblade is not as popular. Beautiful bike and that black is really badass. With Marquez dominating, I would think Honda would be selling a ton.

MotoGP bikes are not roadbikes. The current gen CBR has its problems and the previous one was underpowered. Both are also relatively expensive for what they are. Good bikes though.

Dave Williams, editor, replying here. I can only comment on the US market. The adage "Win on Sunday sell on Monday," mantra was and continues to be a myth here in America. In the mid 00's the best selling sportbike was the GSX-R600 which was raced almost nowhere on the planet at the time, and it won almost nothing where it was raced. ZX-10R's should be flying off the shelves with Rea winning 5 WSBK's in a row and we see BMW's 4 to 1 over Kawi's. I've no idea what Europe and Asia are like.

please excuse the ignorance of this question. Why disable the electronic suspension? And what is DMT?

Electronic suspension is created based on oil viscosity and heat. When that exceeds the software, now what? Manual suspension can be adjusted quickly and easily without having to undo wires to the fork caps. Dave Moss Tuning (DMT)

Its a poor seller because its only has 15 more hp than the current GSXR 750. However, Honda always wanted us to ride in the mid range when it came to the street, and they are right. Also, I could tell you that if you replace the exhaust, air filter and add in a tuner (Rapid Bike, Bazzaz , no PC) and a special "classified" part, that 180+ would pop out of know where at the rear wheel. Its hiding in there. Stock engine. Honest. ;)

By the time Honda does something everybody's already bought an upgraded liter bike from another manufacturer who beat them to the punch.

I find this trend towards electronically configured suspension disconcerting. Is it really necessary, or is it simply gimmicky needless complication?

For those individuals that will never use a tool (ie: modern generation that use their cell phone for everything), this option is very appealing for that simple reason. As per phone, push a button and work through GUI's to get what you need. Whether they do that of course is another question.
