Entered the sales field almost exactly 5 years ago to the week. After spending about six hours cold calling people unsuccessfully for my last call I was so frustrated I stopped trying to sell. I basically told the guy… “I’m sure you want to hang up because you weren’t expecting my call. I’m sure you don’t need my product because you have another source. And one other comment I don’t remember. He stopped me mid-speech and asked me what I was calling about because he might need it. He’s my biggest client today. So much psychology in sales. Matt, I know this is an older video, but after today I felt compelled to comment. I watched it last night around 10pm. I woke up this morning and made around 57 calls. I had about 25 connects, and I used the second script (or a variation of it) every time. Literally, 100% of the time I was allowed to speak. I even got some laughs and one guy said, “well, hell, now I’ve got to hear you out.” And every single time I was allowed to continue beyond my prop statement. I made some great contacts and now have some legitimate suspects and leads! So, THANK YOU!

I would imagine that cold calling would be a very tough way to make a living these days. Hardly anyone has a landline phone anymore, and so with all the phone apps on smart phones, call screening has become easy and quite effective. My smartphone's phone app weeds out almost every telemarketer call and sends them straight to voicemail without ever ringing my phone. The few that get through only have a few seconds to explain who they are and why they called me before I hit the spam button on my phone's screen, which then hangs up on them and blocks their number from calling ever again.

I have been cold calling since you were in diapers and I still do. What you call poor opening lines, works for me every single time. I then go into the whole, "Can I have x amount of seconds to tell you why Im calling." Or I say, "I know I interrupted you day so I don't want to take up too much of your time, can you get me in touch with_____". Cold calling is always personable. Just be personable and friendly and not salesy. I tell my sales people to say what they are most comfortable with and what works for them, just sound natural.

I've always wanted to adopt the mentality of entering a cold call without giving off that "fishy salesperson" vibe that all of us get put off from, however within the company I work for, the scripts that they urge not to stray away from too much makes me a bit anxious trying to do so. I call service providers and I use a "stop the scroll" type opening to get them to say "YES!" And that works like a charm because I know if they say no, the sale is basically dead and I move on to the next call.

I make 135+ dials a day setting appts for companies. I traditionally go the “how are you doing” or “hey I was following up from our conversation from a few months ago” lines. Hi Matt, In the first example, based on Chris Voss' technique of 'getting to No instead of Yes', instead of saying "Can I have 27 seconds ..." which forces them to say 'Yes', you could try saying "Would you be against giving me 27 seconds ...." This would result in them saying 'No' in order to give you permission to let them know why you called.

I totally agree with asking permission to continue the call. It is actually the same process as closing someone. They are thinking (Subconscious) while you are talking(conscious), and when you are asking a question, you are reversing the roles. When you ask someone a question, they will answer you 100% of the time. When someone gives you permission to continue the call, the cognitive function of the brain prevents them from going back to their decision. They will give you plenty of time to explain the reason for your call. All you have to do then, is to think about the desired response you are looking for, and to build a question that will lead you to that desired answer! I am available for a meeting either tomorrow morning or in the afternoon, which one suits you best? The only bad news is that I am not available before Thursday morning for a meeting, is that too far away for you? I have two types of meeting available, a condensed meeting of 20 minutes or a more elaborate one of 30 minutes, which would suit your schedule the best?

There is absolutely nobody on here that is stronger than me! I have an apartment paid for by the company I work for that moved me from Virginia to Maryland to run the call center. I’ve been doing stuff like this for over 30 years and I’ve netted my companies over 1 million a year, so here’s something quick and to the point never say Mister or Mrs. call people by their first names. Here’s a quick script for opening lines. This is Steve with XYZ, I know your times important so I’ll be brief or you can say this is Steve from XYZ. I’m going over your account I just need 30 seconds of your time ((and it doesn’t matter if they are a previous customer who bought in the past or if there’s somebody that’s been not interested or never rescheduled appointment, said or this is the first time you got a hold of somebody , just get to the point after that)). To your video about dude saying wanna give me 30 seconds or hang up? You never give a customer a reason to say no. Why say or hang up? Bad choice of words.
