Jeb, New Zealand has the most fascinating natural scenery I have seen outside of the USA. The train ride you took from Greymouth to Christchurch is among the most scenic and iconic train rides anywhere around the world. I loved the South Island and Christchurch. However, I was there before the big earthquakes rocked that beautiful city where in the City Center was awesome colonial architecture. Would I go back to New Zealand? You bet, and I would do it immediately if I had the chance to go. The people of New Zealand were the friendliest I have ever met in all of my international travels. The one takeaway I have of New Zealand is it's a gem in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean where the seas can get crazy. Btw, the weather reminded me so much of the Pacific Northwest here in the USA.

Boy OH Boy, you and Susan brought back some memories for my wife and I. Back in approximately 2012, we took one of our many trips to New Zealand. Believe it or not; I had lived in Australia for about 50 years and NEVER wanted to visit NZ. I eventually took my first trip to the North Island after my daughter & her husband and grandkids moved over there. That first trip as the start of some 12 trips were eventually made across the "DITCH". In 2012, the "Bride" and I (yes we had been married by this time for 40 years) decided to travel from Christchurch; down the east coast of the South Island across to Wanaka, then down to Queenstown; the Fijordland, and up the West Coast to Milford Sound, up to The Franz Josef Glacier and carried up to Greymouth where we turned Right and headed for Arthurs Pass then onto Geraldine on the west coast after which we went back to Hokatika and Greymouth via Arthur's Pass. We travelled on to Picton and Nelson then came down the East coast though Kiakoura. I immediately recognised the Town of Kiakoura, the railway line and the very roadway we drove down. WOW the memories came flooding back. We overnighted at Kiakoura and carried on down to Christchurch where our journey began. We spent a wonderful three weeks on the road, visiting other places like the Fox Glacier, Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook, Tiamaru, and many more places. Looks like we are going to have to get to NZ again. Many thanks for sharing our wonderful journey with us. Best Wishes mate!

Glad you enjoyed your holiday Angus. I live in Geraldine, which you mention in your narrative. It's great to see the number of tourists travelling through Geraldine rapidly increasing now that NZ is open again. @@xr6lad Clearly triggered by a woman in control eh. Actually the rail system was mostly killed off previously by centre-right governments. If you had a half-open mind, you'll discover the current government over the last 5 years has invested nzd billions in upgrading tracks, signalling and rolling stock, mostly for decarbonising freight transport. As a platform for further investment. Kiwis travel by plane or car as NZ's geography is mountainous. NZ is not Japan or Europe having only 5 million people over the size of Italy, Uk, Japan, California etc. What's Australia or the US's excuse for poor rail infrastructure? I've travelled Amtrak from Montreal down to Miami, from New Orleans to LA and it was a pretty dire experience. Dirty carriages and piss poor food offerings. Sketchy rail stations especially late at night. And in Australia, what passes for intercity travel (the 50 year old XPT) is a sad joke between Sydney and Brisbane. Delays.delays and oh yes, yet more delays. Till they just gave up and the last part of the trip was by bus from Casino to Brisbane. Clapped out infrastructure in countries way richer than NZ. Just sayin'....

Years ago I lived on the West Coast of the South Island. I loved the fact there were trains, and got so used to hearing them day & night. I took my school ages daughters on the Transalpine right in the middle of winter. As we left Greymouth it was drizzling, as we entered the tunnel is had become sleet. On exiting it was like we had been transported to Narnia. It was magical. All the road passes were closed, so in Arthur's Pass we picked up about 4 loads of bus tourists. We stopped once for the tracks to be cleared, but it was extra time on board. Absolutely loved it! A few years later did the Coastal Pacific to Blenheim. Gorgeous! The New Zealanders built these scenic coaches themselves funny enough. The tunnel was closed to rail passengers when we were there, you had to ride a bus around.
@jodij23662 жыл бұрын
There is a funny story about why the coaches were built here. It was thought at the time that the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches couldn't make it through the #1 tunnel on the Midland Line (the one the Tranz Alpine goes on) and so the team at Hillside had to design their own carriages, albeit heavily influenced by the ex-British Rail Mk II dimensions. Seemed to have not been an issue as the ex-British Rail Mk II coaches are now used as baggage cars.

Kia ora from. Thank you so much for the trip from Greymouth to Wellington. It made me homesick. I have lived in Australia for 30-odd years and now I am retired I am going home to Auckkand. My Kiwi friends and I have kept in touch all those years. I look forward to joining you on your travels. Jo

Been to NZ five times, with a North Island train ride in 1995. Beautiful place. One add-on. There is a braided valley; the Horcones Valley; in Argentina leading to base camp on the south face of Cerro de Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America.

Great video of the trans alpine express. Brings back memories of taking the train from Greymouth to Christchurch years ago

Thanx for the great video. For those interested the locomotives on these trains are General Electric U26c (U Boats) purchased between 1972 and 1977 and have been rebuilt several times. Originally they were 2700 HP and now are 3000 or 3300 HP. There are 57 new 4000 HP locos from Stadler Rail on order due 2024 to replace the U boats. Also the NZ rail gauge is narrow gauge of 3'6"
