I am a Maori from that area. I have noticed some Maori words in Korean and Japanese languages. It's just that they have different meanings. We also roll the R when we talk as well. Our nouns are also pronounced the same way. Thankyou for showing a bit of my country to the world. I no longer live there as I have lived in Australia for the last 20 years. So it was good to see that area again.😃

About the linguistic connection... Lapita people. Lapita people and culture originates in South East China, spreading through island South East Asia and then the Pacific through to Polynesia. There is a possible link between these people and the early Jomon people of Japan.

Great video and spectacular train ride, made all the more special by the opening shot. My partner lived in the Victoria Mansions, shown in your opening scene ‘95-97. Beautiful art deco building and wonderful city, Christchurch!. Well done Kuga!

Christchurch local here... randomly popped up in my feed. I have to say... had no idea of the utterly ridiculous cost of this trip! When I was a kid... this was a cheap passenger service... it seems to exclusively be a tourist trip now reeling in crazy money from overseas visitors! Given that the route of the train, for the most part, follows the highway... I can't help but wonder if visitors are better off hiring a car to see the same scenery and also stop along the way... for a fraction of the cost. That rant aside.... great video and I'm glad to have stumbled across it!

I did it by bus. It was a LOT cheaper lol. I just couldn't justify the cost of the train.

Hello Kuga san, we were in Christchurch at the same time. I caught the pacific explorer from chch to Blenheim, just before Picton. I stayed at “hotel give” across from the gardens for a week. Those headphones confused me lol but I figured them out eventually. 😁

A side track but I love your deep dive insight about Japan. I was so close to visiting it at one point. Had experience with acting and in 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit Asia.

Such a shame that some people cannot manage a train journey without their mobile phones either on mute or, better still, switched off. No consideration for their fellow passengers.

So how do Kiwi folks (and others) pronounce Greymouth?
@heathwellsNZАй бұрын
Kiwi here. Grey or gray (like the colour) and mouth like the body part... the town is situated at the mouth of the Grey River... hence the name.

@@heathwellsNZ Thank you. I thought they would be the same but the silly side of me thought of Vermouth (pronounced as vr-mooth) when I saw the name. Cheers.

Yo, Kuga! Been wondering about your English skills for some time. You seem to speak English well enough to give us commentary on your videos, yet I don't think I've ever heard your voice. Do you interface with English speakers when you're traveling? Just wondering.
