The yellow mushrooms are chanterelles and they are very tasty. The red one which you said you are not even touching is an edible russula mushroom. You are very unlikely to get poisoned on the mushrooms with "foam" instead of gills underneath but there are some with incredibly bitter or sharp taste that doesn't go away with cooking.

Mushrooming is a big part of my culture. In Czechia, it's almost a tradition. If you have never been out, hunting for mushrooms, as a kid, you didn't have a good childhood. I'm going tomorrow, it's right after a storm, temperatures will dropped down yesterday, and tonight will also be colder, whilst humid. Perfect time to go give it a shot. Also, gather more of them, cut into them. If wormy - dry, and use later (can make mushroom powder - great for stews). The nice ones you can eat. I think you could try and make a traditional Czech Bramboračka (potato stew). One of its main component are mushrooms, just like the one you found. Mushrooms with gills are tricky, and edible ones are not so abundant. The ones with pores are easy to identify. If they don't taste good when raw (small bite, check for bitterness/other unpleasant things), toss them. If pass, take them to a camp, and identify them. Or ask someone with more experience. Experience, and being cautious is the key, not to get poisoned.

Pike have eyes on top of their head and are generally always hanging out on the bottom water level and are looking up towards the surface. They cant see very well if something is directly in front of them or below them. That might be what fish were right in front of you ignoring your lures (which you put near the bottom right in front of them). Pike go after big topwater lures. You want a lure that resembles a frog or a snake or a rat or a duckling or some small land creature. Freshwater is around the forest (or at least surrounded by land), so the easiest prey item for freshwater predatory fish are not small fish, it is actually small land creatures that have to swim into the water. Thats a huge difference from salt water. Pike, pickerel, musky and that whole family of fish also eat things that seem way too big for them to possibly swallow. A 40 cm pike would go after a 20+ cm lure if the lure is on the surface and splashes around enough. The bigger the better. You can also use live bait, but about 60 cm up the line put a bobber so the live bait has to stay near the surface in the strike zone for pike. Edit: freshwater fish are also more accustomed to murky water so they rely on sensory organs more than their eyes compared to most saltwater fish. There are lures that have a shaker or marble in them that the freshwater fish will be more interested in, but splashing on the surface with a big topwater lure will definitely do it, too. Spoons and shiny things can still catch fish, but they are much more effective in salt water compared to fresh water. You probably attracted all those fish to you with the fly rod and the action of your swim bait then the fish couldn’t see your lure or they didnt think it was big enough to be worth going after.

The yellow ones that you said you think were edible, are delicious chanterelles! Probably much better than that birch bolete you cooked up 😅😅 that was a bit too worm filled. The stalk is actually one of the better eating parts when it’s not full of worms! The first couple of ones seem like some type of Russula sp, some people in Europe eat them if they don’t taste spicy.

I'm from Poland and we have long family tradition of mushroom picking. Basically, if you don't know them and you're in the survival situation, the rule of thumb is: pick only those with sponge underneath and avoid the ones colored red, but my honest advice is: better do not pick them at all. There are mushrooms which can destroy your liver after consuming only few grams and those are often mistaken with edible ones.
@anonymousacid9160

I have a question: can't worms cross-contaminate edible mushrooms since they also can eat ones that are poisonous to humans? I was kinda worried about cross-contamination when field days pointed out the "worm lines" in the mushroom stem.
@krzysiek.w.
@krzysiek.w. 9 күн бұрын
@@anonymousacid9160 That's super interesting question, honestly. I don't think it is a problem, as those can't probably travel very far, but who knows :D In the "normal" situation it doesn't really matter. If mushroom has worms inside, you basically do not take it. First of all, it's disguisting 😃 second, they can infect other mushrooms in the bucket

Also I find it very enjoyable to see you trying to figure things out and to put yourself in a new situation to see how your knowledge applies to a different scenario. It’s very educational and also entertaining to watch. I really enjoyed this episode! Also you have really inspired me to try this myself. Go out into nature and go camping, fishing, etc. back to the roots kinda style. Unfortunately wild camping and especially fishing is prohibited or very regulated in my country and the surrounding countries. Anyway keep on punching ahead. People always assume colorful mushrooms are the dangerous ones, and alot are, and infact red one you found is called a sickener. But because colorful mushrooms are generally easier to identify than your average brown parasol, it wouldn't hurt to learn to ID a few of the more distinct edible ones. As for the one you decided to eat, is some type of bolete (I belive a bronze bolete), and happens to be edible. But there are many pored mushrooms many of which are also poisonous, though pores are a good distinction to help ID them.

I was so excited when I saw that youre in Europe! Some thoughts on that fishing stuff: With cristal clear water you could fish with a float and a worm as bait. Most fish will eat the worm. You will most definitely catch zero pike on a fly. Try finding spots with grass or a fallen tree in the water. That’s where they usually hide. Zander hunt mostly in the evening and night and are very picky eaters. But they taste great. Their cousins are easier to catch. The big school of fish hunting were probably perch. They taste great too. If you want to catch a fish that puts up a big fight go for carp.

I'm from Central Europe aswell, close to where you hunted. I'm an expert for wild mushrooms. Just not for their english names. The one you ate was a bit old and I would have let it stay in the forest. But yea, it was edible. The ones with the spongy under-part are not all edible. Most types are and none of them are a great danger to your health but there are a few exceptions that are rather rare to come by, causing stomach issues or simply tasting as bitter as childhood medicine and therefor are not recommended to be eaten. The yellow ones you showed were in a better condition and are edible. They taste great. Most other stuff you showed were so called "Täublinge" in German. Specifically Schwarz-Täublinge you found a couple of times. Those would not have been poisonous but are generally not advised for consumptions because of how bad they taste. You also came across a young Perpilz on your journey. It was, chronologically the 3rd mushroom the video showed. Those are actually pretty good! We enjoy them a lot. For beginners those are a bit tricky since they can be misidentified for a pretty dangerous poison shroom called the Pantherpilz. But if you get more experienced with those two types and don't accidently mix them up, I'd recommend trying those. Your mindset was correct. If you can only identify with 99% certainty then you shouldn't eat a wild mushroom. There are really dangerous ones out there that can kill you even when you only eat small amounts. Enjoy your stay in Europe! :)

The berries at 6:12 / 41:23 are blackberries which are invasive in many parts of europe, mulberries are longer in shape but look very similar.

The yellow mushrooms are one of the best delicacies when it comes to mushrooms and the big one is also good cooked
@alfailrasoio543

About the mushrooms: if they have the foam they are 99% edible but avoid the ones that look red on the lower part (they are the only ones venomous) and before cooking them taste a little part to make sure they are eatable. The yellow mushrooms (chanterelles) are the better ones in my opinion and there are usually many of them in the same spot, than always check out for more of them when you spot one. They are also pretty safe because the similar ones are usually edible (be really careful of what mushroom you pick tho because some of them are really dangerous, many people die every year because of eating venomous or mortal mushrooms)

woah i learnt diffrently, although the knowledge i got is from survival training in the singapore army, avoid yellow ones , red, brown ,white, foamy are edible
@alfailrasoio543
@alfailrasoio543 17 күн бұрын
@@z13zackenem55 it depends. The chanterelles are usually yellow or really light orange. U should avoid the light brown ones with no foam, but it's pretty easy avoiding them cause they have a different color and the chanterelles are thicker.

Try dead baiting for the Pike and Zander bro, and the course fishing is fun. Try Spam/bread/worms/sweetcorn for most of the other species in them waters.

In Czech Republic, the fly rod is better suited for fishing in rivers. There is a lot of fishermen here, and the fish are usually a bit less cautious in a fast flowing water.

Yellow mushrooms you found at 30:22 are called Chanterelle, those and Porcinis are probably one of the best tasting mushrooms. We usually saute them on garlic/onions etc., and then either add egg or two for quick mushroom and eggs dish ^^ But you can also eat them raw, where you can't eat that bad boy you found at 31:38 Leccinellum griseum is not edible raw, but cooked is perfectly fine, considered as 2nd tier mushroom here due to it's discoloring on touch/being on air, but it's quite good tasting mushroom imho...
