2 Days of Railfanning in Marion, Ohio from Marion's Union Station.

Liam and traveled back to Marion, Ohio for some live railfanning action. Of course, this is one of our favorite railfanning hotspots in Ohio. Not only because of the amount of train traffic but it is also pretty close to our house maybe a 30-minute drive one-way.
In this video you will see Deer, Cars hitting cross gates, cars running an active crossing, heritage unit and more.
Marion Day 1
First up was a NS south bound manifest train being led by Norfolk Southern Locomotive 9683 a GE Dash 9 44CW built for NS in March of 2001. It was lashed up with some foreign power provided by Union Pacific locomotive 5450 a GE AC45CCTE built in 2005. Train had a nice consist of mixed freight to include tankers, flats, grain and more.
Quickly after CSX pushed their local train out of the Marion yard heading East, Leading was CSX locomotive 6449 a GP40-2 and Locomotive 2680 another Geep but a 38-2. It appears they had plenty of power for this run across town only pulling the one boxcar.
Next was a West bound CSX work train pulling a complete consist of Herzog ballast cars. Leading the work train was CSX locomotive 5382 a GE ES40DC it was paired up with a couple CSX CW44AC's locomotives 410 and 422. The first half of the train was loaded ballast cars and the back half were empties. I am not sure where the ballast work was being performed. I filmed the entire train as this is something we do not see often.
East bound CSX Intermodal train made its way into Marion, the action was starting to pick up.
CSX Locomotive 3168 a GE ES44AC-H and CSX Locomotive 3402 a GE AC44CW powered this intermodal train through. Sometimes I get tired of seeing intermodal trains as we all know this is the majority of freight today.
Once CSX had cleared the Diamonds NS was able to open it back up and start running its freight along the NS Sandusky District line in Marion, Ohio.
North Bound Grain Train well mainly grain was led by Union Pacific Locomotives 6410 and 6484, as this train come up to the crossing a vehicle pickup truck had hit the crossing gate. I am not sure what that person was looking at, but it was awful close to creating some damage for both the vehicle and gate arm.
Next was NS locomotive 1071 and SD70ACe heritage unit Jersey Central Lines. This unit was so dirty Liam and I thought maybe it was a CSX unit when it first made the curve from the North. Does Norfolk have a wash bay for the locomotives? Seems strange that they wouldn't. Anyway, this was a South Bound intermodal train and NS 1071 was paired up with a Pair of Dash 9-40CWs Norfolk Locomotives 9490 and 9698.
As the outside temperature heated up, so did the live railfanning action, North Bound manifest train led by Norfolk Southers locomotive 1087 an SD70ACe build for NS in April 2013 and capable of creating 4300 HP, its equipped with a Nathan K5LLA and Norfolk has about 215 of these locomotives on its roster. Locomotive 1087 was lashed up with NS Locomotive 4418 a Rebuilt GE AC44C6M and another SD70ACe NS locomotive 1090.
Another Manifest train blasts south down the NS Sandusky District line in Marion, Ohio. This time a ES44AC is leading the way NS locomotive 8052 paired up with barrowed power from BNSF locomotive 7180 a GE ES44C4. Norfolk Southern has recently been utilizing a ton of barrowed power on all their lines. We were on the Chicago line a week ago and the same thing there plenty of neat locomotives from BNSK, Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern.
That what conclude the first day at Marion, Ohio. Unfortunately, I am running out of text here in the description and will not be able to fill you in with all the great railroading information.
We have been to Marion well over 200 times and this is the first time that we have seen a tripe meetup. Marion is and will always be my favorite place to railfan.
