Fun fact but not really fun: Hans Christian Anderson wrote this as a love letter to his crush (who he found was about to be married). After Hans wrote it he gave it to his crush (who was Edvard Collin) and when he read it he was disgusted. Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermain was a euphemism for the love he couldn't pursue, a mermaid can't be with a human, just like how a man couldn't be with another man (in those times). And of course the book didn't have a happy ending, just like he didn't have a happy ending. The Little Mermaid is the best love letters written in history.

I'd really like to see the opposite of what happens in this movie now, so like, Eric get's a tail and needs to adapt to merpeople society, cuz some of it seems really interesting, like, music seems super important to them but I remember there being a movie about triton banning all music cuz of his grief and stuff, plus Eric would have incentive to learn that kinda stuff seeing that the two societies kinda would merge were they to marry. and yes I know how stupid this sounds for a kids movie but the nostalgia got me

further incentive being his daughter is also a mermaid and he as a father should experience the world that his wife and daughter do, at least for a little bit. it honestly wouldn’t even be hard for him to do since his father in law is the king of the sea and did exactly this for ariel in the second movie. it’d be interesting to finally see the culture of the mer-people too and it’d be easy seeing it through eric’s eyes. i imagine that the 3 of them visit the kingdom to introduce melody to the life of the people, make a fishing trade, and/or to defend the kingdom from another that has discovered the mer-people. like melody begs to go, on the way there a neighboring kingdom sees the transformation happen, they plot to capture them, etc. . . . this is probably way too detailed of a comment and i’m not as interested as it seems. i just this it’s an idea that actually makes a lot of sense and could really contribute to the story of the mer-people and humans merging. possibly a prequel to the second movie, explaining why they kept melody so far from water. okay i’ll stop here lol

...No? The movie literally introduces Ariel by showing her risk her life to explore and understand human culture BEFORE she met Eric. She left her family to live on the surface because that had always been her dream. She only got involved with Ursula because her dad flew off the handle and destroyed a museum that she'd spent years building herself from scratch. Falling in love with Eric was a bonus, and a means to an end. And he fell for her initially because she was brave and kind enough to risk her life swimming through a storm to save him. Her voice happened to be what stood out to him most while he was disoriented, so that was his best bet at finding her again. But after she lost her voice and he thought she was someone different, he still fell in love with her again by getting to know her, and was willing to give up on the "other girl" to be with her.
