The Little Mermaid Movie Description:
The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. Featuring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him.
The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, earning praise for the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release, and $235 million in total lifetime gross worldwide. Along with the major success of both the 1986 Disney animated film The Great Mouse Detective and the 1988 Disney/Amblin live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after some films produced by Disney were struggling. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea").
The film's success led to a media franchise. A direct-to-video sequel was released in 2000, focusing on Ariel's daughter, Melody. A prequel followed in 2008. The first film was adapted into a stage musical with a book by Doug Wright and additional songs by Alan Menken and new lyricist Glenn Slater opened in Denver in July 2007 and began performances on Broadway January 10, 2008 starring Sierra Boggess.
Other derived works and material inspired by the film, include a live-action film adaptation, directed by Rob Marshall, currently scheduled for release in 2023, and a 2019 live musical presentation of the film aired on ABC as part of The Wonderful World of Disney.
In 2022, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Honestly, she seems to sadly accept her fate with just collecting trinkets. And although she fell for Eric. She wanted to meet him as a mermaid. She didn't look into how to actually turn into human. The real push that led her a dumb path, was her dad (also going on a dumb path) destroying her entire collection.

I think people tend to forget that yes, Ariel was in love with Eric, but she has ALWAYS a wanted to be a part of the human world. While yes, she maybe made a bad choice trusting Ursula, she made the choice that felt most right for her in the moment. She had always wanted to be human and her father destroyed everything she cared about, so in the heat of the moment when the eels came to her she made an impulsive decision to not only be with eric but also to be a human in general.

Long before the remake was even announced, there was a definitive effort (mostly by feminists) to downplay the impact of The Little Mermaid due to them misunderstanding (and misrepresenting) this key detail - Ariel has very specific desires about the human world that are separate from Eric. Everything about her situation is a catalyst for her to go for it - being rebellious of her father, saving Eric’s life, Ursula’s deal, etc. The movie goes much deeper than many give it credit for in this respect, and worse, people will hand all of that credit to the remake when it was absolutely present in the original.

Howard Ashman (who wrote the songs for this movie) also wrote the songs for _Beauty and the Beast_ and _Aladdin_ . He believed animation was the best medium to show off musicals because they go in and out of reality similar to stage theatre. He was the unsung hero of the Disney Renaissance. Unfortunately he died of AIDS at the age of 40.

Animation, like stage, takes advantage of exaggeration. Trying to translate the over-the-top facial expressions of animation/stage to live action generally does not work, so some of the charm is lost.

It also shows that if somebody offers you something and it seems too good to be true, then it probably is and that they don't have your best interests at heart despite what they claim. It's like Ursula says, (very rarely) "you can't get something for nothing, you know" and they probably didn't just randomly decide to choose you out of everyone else.

Ah yes, the film that pulled Disney out of it's darkest era, and into a new age of greatness. There are just so many reasons to love this movie. The characters are all great, the animation and music are gorgeous, and the songs are next level Broadway style hits. "Part Of Your World" is just beautiful, "Under The Sea" is a massive bop, and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is still one of the best villain songs Disney has ever made.

Now it’s looking like Disney is heading into another dark era and that’s pretty much on Bob Chapek and COVID to an extent. Pixar has been tarnished as a brand because of their films going straight to Disney+ since the pandemic began, and Lightyear’s underperformance really shows that a lot people are now getting used to waiting for Pixar films to drop on the streaming service. With Elemental looking like a bomb in a couple of weeks and Universal’s animated films becoming more box office successes than Disney’s, along with the recent success of Across the Spider-Verse, they’re no longer the king of animation.

Jodi Benson: the voice of Ariel says her performance especially in Part of That World is all due to Howard Ashman coaching her in how to sing every note in order to get the right emotions and message across. These songs are part of the story and not just a break for some music. The acting is just as important during the singing. This movie focused on the important parts of the story needed to tell it. The animation and everything just comes together perfectly. Part of the Disney Princess magic is finding your True Love. That person that is your other half that some part of you recognizes when you first see them. Love that you recognized how Triton is desperate to keep her safe. He is terrified that she will die. 😂 Ariel is very hard headed Ursula is a complete badass.

Ariel was in a very vulnerable state after Triton destroyed her grotto, that's why she went to Ursula and she was already obsessed with the surface, as obviously shown by her whole song about it before she ever met Eric. Eric and her father destroying the grotto was just a final push to make her do something drastic.

Two things you gotta remember with the first time Eric saw Ariel is he had just recovered consciousness and she was back-lit (if you go back you can see how her hair color is darkened because of the lighting). So being half conscious and unsure of hair color, you can see how he confuses Vanessa for Ariel

IMO, this film is NOT a love story, but story about parent-child dynamic. Triton and Ariel learnt to accept eachother point of view. Triton learnt that humans aren't that bad and dangerous as he thought, and Ariel learnt that her father just wanted her to be safe.

This is the film that got Disney out of their dark era. After Walt Disney’s death, they’ve been producing mediocre work and most of their films lost money. So they were pretty much on the verge of shutting down and They needed a Hail Mary pass. What they came up with was something they haven’t done since Snow White, a fairy tale musical. Enter The Little Mermaid. It went on to win two Oscars (Best Original Score and Song) and began the Disney renaissance, and followed up The Little Mermaid with Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

Well, I was alive during that time. I saw re-releases of Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, as well as new movies like Oliver and Company and The Great Mouse Detective. Mouse Detective was great (same directors) but it didn’t even make half the box office Mermaid would make. It’s no exaggeration that this movie brought about anew age of animation, and not just for Disney. Dreamworks wouldn’t be around today.

Reason why Eric couldn't get Ariels voice out of his head and obsessed in finding her is because mermaids are sirens and in myth when sirens sing they'd lure sailors to their deaths due to the fact that men would be entranced hence why Ursula took Ariels voice so she couldnt win Eric easily just by talking remember as soon as she got her voice back eric immediately jumped on the opportunity and also (and remember she has the most beautiful voice in Atlantica) Ursala used it her voice to enchant Eric to marry her.

I actually had an idea for a fanfic that focuses on King Triton while Ariel is gone. After three days of searching, there is still no sign of Ariel, with Triton's subjects completely exhausted, and nowhere left to look. Frustrated, Triton goes to search for Ariel himself, and his search eventually leads him to the surface, as Ariel would often go there against his wishes. While there, Triton sees a happy human family playing on the beach, and seeing their love for one another triggers a memory of Triton's own family from when his wife was still alive. There may even be a moment where a member of the human family helps a fish that had washed up on the beach back into the water, much to Triton's shock. In this moment, Triton sees in this human family, his OWN family, and finally realizes that humans are not unfeeling barbarians, but actual PEOPLE. Realizing at last how terrible he'd been, Triton is utterly ashamed of his previous actions, and gives up his search for Ariel, believing that he doesn't deserve to get her back, and that she'd be better off without him. But then, Sebastian arrives to tell him about Ursula, spurning him back to action.

What surprises me is how so many people don't realize Disney's stories are happy versions of the Brothers Grimm fairytales. Most are from European cultures and lore. They were warnings, explanations, or morales. The real version of this was warning against obsession. "Ariel" didn't get the prince's affection and turned into sea foam that would always hug a ship's haul hoping to be close to him.

You missed the point there buddy, little mermaid had the chance to correct her mistake, her sisters made a deal with the sea witch to allow their sister return to sea, they cut their hair all of them as the sea witch demanded, a sacrifice, your family will be there to support you and help no matter how much you screwed up. Little mermaid had a chance to return to the sea, but she had to kill the prince with a knife. But she loved him, even though her loved was not reciprocated, she wouldn’t put herself above her feelings and hurt him. That’s why the little mermaid despite turning to sea foam she gained an eternal life, she got a soul because of her actions.

King Tritan has a daughter for each of the seven seas. Sebastian the Crab is Jamaican because Alan Menken decided the movie needed an upbeat song and went with that style. KZbin channel Sideways has a very good video called "What Makes Disney Music Sound Nostalgic" that talks more about the music of the Disney Renaissance (which began with this movie). Ursala's garden did freak me out as a kid. Same with the shot of her crawling towards Ariel. This is one of few (if not the only) Disney movies where the villain is _intentionally_ killed by one of the good guys. The prince actually is a mean jerk in the original version of the story and it has a rather depressing ending.

So when people call her stupid for signing the contract and going up on the surface, because of prince Eric, I wonder if they’re actually paying attention. She literally sang a whole song that the only reason why she wanted to go on the surface was to experience the human life. She didn’t go up there because of Eric, but she had to kiss Eric, in order for her to have her dreams come true. It wouldn’t even matter if they didn’t get married, at least she would be human by a kiss.

Also the fact that her dad acted extreeeemely abusively when he basically took a magic machinegun to her collection. Her lifes work. She probably spent years finding all that junk, and we saw how dangerous doing it was, so it wasn't easy either. All because a 16 year old girl got a little crush on a human, and Triton is racist towards humans. If he'd just been calm, and not a raging asshole. Ariel would never have felt desperate enough to go to Ursula, she would have stayed in the sea, with occasional visits to Scuttle, and that crush would have faded away. Cause realistically, without legs she'd probably never see him again. Like, maybe her obsession with human things would grow... But honestly I don't think she'd ever go to Ursula if the Triton tantrum hadn't happened. And that means she could only watch from afar.

She ultimately wanted to experience the human world and Ursula used her feelings to ensure she would sign the deal that rigged in Ursula’s favor anyway (bc she took her voice).

19:34 actually for a lot of their older films they would have real people act out the scene in costume on a mock set so the animators could reference it for hair/fabric/body motion and facial expressions, which really gave the animation that smooth life-like quality you describe

Howard Ashman and Alan Meinken did the music. They also did Beauty and the Beast after this and Little Shop of Horrors before this. Howard unfortunately died of AIDS but Alan went on to score lots of other Disney movies in the 90's and 00's. Also yeah... Ursula almost drowned her by turning her into a human deep under water. A lot of people miss that.

This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters so I'll always have a place in my heart for it. This is the movie that brought about Disney's renaissance. After this there was Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Hercules, Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, and Tarzan. It was literally a decade of some of the greatest Disney films of all time and it was all thanks to this movie.

It's more so she's desperate to get away from people that don't understand her. You gotta think about the situation. Ariel has no friends outside Flounder and Scuttle that support her love for the human world. Her father destroyed all her stuff in a place where she thought she could be safe to have the only things that made her happy, totally traumatizing her and realizing she can't trust her father. She swims off in hopes of maybe changing her life for the better, to be around people that may understand her better.

Here’s the other thing that gets me about the whole her loving Eric debate. Whether Ariel knew Eric well or not, she saw someone drowning and saved his life. The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite Disney films growing up but agree about the story. I just really loved the music, specifically Part of Your World. I used to sing along with it allll the time. If you haven't watched them highly recommend Mulan, Hercules, Tarzan, and Brother Bear. Also trying the sequel to this, I don't think a lot of big reaction channels ever do the Disney sequels.

Fun Fact: Sebastian is Jamaican because the lyricist for the movie Howard Ashman wanted to relate to Pop Culture at the time which was Reggea. That is why he wrote Under the Sea how he did. Sebastian was originally supposed to be British.

I still know every single word of this dialogue. Came out when I was 9. Ariel will always be my princess. Scuttle was always my favorite. Something that the new movie leaned into that was a lot more subtext in the original was that Ariel leaves because she feels unsafe and unaccepted at home. She had to live hiding part of herself for years, and when Triton flips out and destroys everything it's the tipping point. She is afraid and alone, too emotional to make rational decisions right after her father flipped on her, so she is vulnerable to Ursula's manipulation.

The reason why the animation looks so smooth / lifelike is because they commonly use rotoscoping as a part of the animation process. "Effects" animators would add things like the floating hair, but the body motions are largely using filmed actors as references. Ursula the Sea Witch was designed after the cross-dressing actor Divine from the 60s-80s.

Hey, I enjoy your channel but I've noticed this very simple view people have of Ariel. The directors pointed out that her overbearing father that was extremely strict without even listening to his child's desires forced her into wanting to abandon her old life for what was forbidden. The same story is in the hunchback of note dame, Luca, coco and even lion King yet people say awful things about Ariel completely ignoring that she was singing about being apart of this unknown, fabulous world before she even saw prince Eric. It does make perfect sense as to why Ariel feels this way. It's behavioral philosophy and child development within a story to add depth. It's like a person falling in love with a different country and then falling for a person from that country and finally having a true motive to go to the desired country and not just admire if from afar.

I seriously love this movie. The story is a SOLID A+ in my book. Don't go to evil witches or bad people in general for help, is a good lesson for kids. The chemistry between Airel and Eric is so noticeable and sweet even if it started out with an obsessive crush. They both help and save each other multiple times like a good couple would. Then we got Ursula a very manipulative sea witch. Taking over Eric's mind was scary to me as a kid. How easy she played that poor guy like a toy was really evil. They even showed the struggle of being a good parent with Triton. Letting your kid grow up is hard sometimes and letting another person be a part of their lives is important. I cry every time Triton acknowledges Eric at the ending. Both royals bowing to each other after all this.

The story is a cautionary tale about foolish, impulsive choices. In the Disney version Ariel's selfishness causes everyone a lot of trouble but instead of recognizing this and learning from it, everything just works out for her in the end and there are no consequences.

I honestly was never a huge fan of Ariel or any of the princesses, until Princess Jasmine rolled around, but I did watch this a lot. I loved the colors and Under the Sea was absolutely my jam. That final battle scene was also one of my favorite finale showdowns with Ursala's death being so brutal.

My class in school performed the entire soundtrack in a middle school concert. We all had bubble necklaces and blew bubbles for Under the Sea. I still remember how the crowd went wild. We also did Les Miz, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera - my music teacher put this sountrack up there with those greats!

I think this movie was one of the first movie I've seen when i was a kid. I remember sitting in the living room and my mom pulled out the vhs tape of the little mermaid ( this was back in 2006 when i was 7) and put it on i watched it but i think most of it flew over my head but i did enjoy the songs a lot.
