As a new convert to Orthodox Christianity, I've noticed fasting has helped me crush down certain desires and focus on Christ.

Grace is to the heart fasting is for the disciplining of the body&mind (which are really one) A disciplined body leads to a DISCIPLINED mind which increases greatly our CONFIDENCE before the almighty ,set-apart creator.

My understanding is that the flesh And spirit are at war at all times Thus with our minds we serve the all mighty. This control over the flesh is big .... At this point you are not consuming milk but solids and are having a relationship with the lord Jesus crist This is powerful as a servant of the all mighty..for we are at war...

I am so thankful for Pastor Tim Mackie sharing these teachings and for all the hard work put on The Bible Project. It really amazes me the depth of all his studies on the Word and how he enables a great perspective throuhgout the Bible. I am so grateful for God guiding me in my everyday learning of the Word and allowing me to discover these kind of sources. I pray that God will continue to bless Pastor Tim Mackie and his church with wisdom and generosity. Lots of love from Qatar.

Shalom Sandra Peace be to you. Thank you for your kind response. ( a year ago) If it's okay with you we would like to give you the best news ever: God didn't judge the world, He came to save it. And that's exactly what He did. It's finished. Rejoice ! *He is the savior of everyone.* He will have restitution of all things. He will reconcile all to Himself. All in their own order. *No exceptions.* It's the Faith OF Christ, not the faith IN Christ that saves all. Thank you for your time and patience, Sandra. May God bless you and your loved ones. Amen.

I was fortunate enough to have grown up in the applachian mountains of Kentucky in the holiness faith. I grew up with a people who fasted often. I have seen how fasting brings people to a humble place with God. I really enjoy your teaching. I'm discovering how little I actually knew about Christ's ways.

Said with the love of our holy spirit....after a huge God moment....the act of eating is also very self indulgent.....soooooo,how about ,only focus on what just happened for 24 hours ,to give Him all attention....and then to come back to being fully human 24 hours later....also helps to remember the moment....Tim!! A very hard sermon to preach with little experience....I'm also a person who hasn't fasted on purpose....but I have done a couple vow of sciences..anyways I want to get back to this very wonderful service....love Steve a sinner from nova scotia Canada....

When you feel the hunger the point is to rely on Jesus Christ. Replace the things you once relied on, food, social media, sin, with reliance on Jesus Christ. Deny yourself the things you usually crave and instead pursue Jesus. He's waiting for you.

I think the reason we feast after memorial services in the kingdom era is embodied in our use of the term “Celebration of life.” Revelation: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on . . . And their works do follow them. We celebrate the goodness they brought to the world. We eat together knowing we will see them again. Thank you for deepening my understanding of fasting.

Tim, I love your videos. I've gained so much from the Bible Project in particular. One thing I was curious of is when you make the connection between Jesus, Elijah, and Moses and how they fast it would seem like they aren't all necessarily connected to the great revealing of God. Elijah, in particular, leaves the great scene at Mt. Carmel and goes to the wilderness because of fear from Jezebel's threat and there is given food by God which strengthens him for 40 days for the journey before him (1 Kings 19). It also seems miraculous. In Moses' case in Exodus 34, this is the second time Moses goes up on Sinai. It is this second time where Moses goes up after the people had sinned and made the golden calf. The first time doesn't specify if he fasted but this occasion does. Perhaps the concept of understanding the sinfulness of the people and breaking the covenant is just as much the reason for the fast as being in the presence of God. In Moses' case perhaps he does indeed fast as part of His petition to God to spare this obstinate people from destruction. I was just curious what you or others might make of these details.
@poppy46744 жыл бұрын
I don't have any points to make, just thoughts on your observations:) The Elijah one is specifically interesting. It doesn't specify if he fasted. "The angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you. He arose, and ate and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horev the Mount of God." (1 Kings 19:7-8 HNV) I didn't even catch the 40 days of travel the first time I read through it. Somehow I missed it. He went on the strength of that food. That leads me to think the food strengthened enough that he didn't need to eat for 40 days. It makes sense to me that it was a fast since he was given food to sustain him before hand. But it doesn't read that he was fasting. Maybe it's more clear in the Hebrew. Or perhaps it's an inference on Tim's part. Either way I feel like that experience definitely still applies to the structures of fasting Tim described. Like a little of all of them, you know? He had to flee and was suffering because of the state of his nation. He just saw Yahweh do something wild to reveal Himself and was fed by the angel of Yahweh. Both of those reasons track with Tim's observation about the motive behind fasting. The repentance kind of fasting is the only one that I think doesn't fit in that specific instance. Which makes sense. Something I've learned from the bible project is that everything in the bible is connected to something else in the bible. I think this specific instance is a really interesting one as it relates to Jesus' fasting, and his life on Earth in general. Like Elijah was being hunted down at the time after calling out Israel for turning away from Yahweh. Then after a time of 40 days Yahweh reveals himself in a whisper which seems to gentle to me. (1 Kings 19:12-13) In Jesus' case Yahweh reveals himself through a dove(also gentle), then he goes to the wilderness, then he starts his ministry which eventually leads to him being hunted. It has a lot of parallels with Jesus' life. Thanks so much for pointing that out! Good job doing your home work on that. I didn't even think to explore for myself until I read you comment. Thanks so much for the insight. Cheers!

Immediately the Feasting accounts come to mind are Gospelor Matt's and Prodigal Son's both adjacently of journeying in Self examinations Whereas former seems like Elijah and latter's after pronouncing his 'death' and returning while those unhappy not joining Party's were Pharisees and Elder Son resply... Amazing as ones really enjoyed it never anticipated it were the other fellow disciples and households?!

Very interesting observation!! I never thought of it this way before. Hmm for me however fasting is like a self regulation/discipline proces. If I could do it without fasting, that would be awesome. If I promise myself or others even my family to stop a harmful habit for instance, the probability of keep doing it is really high but if I promise God, with Holy Spirit's help, impossible becomes possible. & as soon as I realize all is good, I stop fasting.

I know of a few churches which practice prayer and fasting. Shane Idleman fasts and prays and the church he pastors. Jim Cymbala and the Brooklyn Tabernacle, and Time Square Church under David Wilkerson, Carter Conlon. Iam sure there are others, I know that the church in the MENA region practices prayer and fasting,as does the persecuted church all over the world. I started fasting at least once a week decades ago. It has been a self discipline while dedicating the day to prayer. Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan for the purpose of drawing close to a god who is not loving or our Savior. Fasting comes easy when we are grieving, or when in the midst of a crises. Ihave read testimonies from reliable sources of miraculous answers to prayer when a church or a group of Christians fast and pray. I also fast from other things beside food. Carter Conlon mentioned fasting from those things which distract us when we are trying to focus on prayer. So, I will fast from media, television, going out with others and staying in solitude for a day. Anything which distracts from seeking Jesus, knocking at His door, asking Him for leading and help.

Good vid. More people are finding out about fasting. Do you think the lack of knowledge is because "fasting" is omitted from modern translations, and not omitted from the KJV.(prayer and fasting) On a side note I try not to fast as a ritual, or superstition.

Your body is going through withdrawal. If it is a spiritual fasting, as the food leaves the Holy Spirit enters if that is what you want.
