2 Games 1 Choice - Helldivers 2 vs Starship Troopers: Extermination - Review and Gameplay

In the BLUE CORNER! a game where you drop in, fight bugs, complete missions and then extract, Starship Troopers: Extermination.
HellDivers 2 had it’s full release a month ago on the 8th of February, it didn't go very well on PC and it’s still riddled with random bugs and crashes but! It has been called the coop game of the year and has the attention of millions, holding impressive player numbers with an all time peak of over 450 thousand concurrent players and currently more than 300 thousand concurrent player daily peak.
Starship Troopers: Extermination went a different path. It was released in early access nearly a year ago in may 2023 and it also had issues, bugs and crashes, but it is still in early access and in development. It too was called the coop game of the year by some but interest dwindled from a merely 16k concurrent player record and having less than 400 concurrent players daily peak.
We are going to take a good look at these 2 very similar grandchildren of Paul Verhoeven and try to explain why 2 very similar games had 2 very different realities.

I am a massive Starship Troopers fan and had been keeping an eye on the game waiting for it to be feature complete before jumping in. Then helldivers 2 came out and it's pretty much already exactly what I wanted from a starship troopers game so I will likely just keep playing that now.

There is so much variety in Helldivers. Planets with their weather and hazard conditions, the mission and sub-objective types. The build variety.

i am playing both regularly. while both fight against bugs the games are fundamentally different. STE is a "Base building" 16 player coop game. you design your base and do repairs etc. HD2 is like left 4 dead type game for me. typical 4 player coop game. with awesome call ins. i am having a blast playing both daily. both scratch a different aspect of game for me.

STE isn't just defense man ASS is a mission where you go do the mission and go and defend a area waiting on your drop ship and then you have Hive's there adding mission's to do and galatic war just like what hell divers has but STE will have more than that at launch. I'm so ready for the new update for STE today its massive alot of new things and and a ton of quality of life changes. one of my favorite new features is 6 new classes and weapon and character customization. I'll be playing STE for the next few days then back to HD2 to finish the new warbond while i wait for the next big update for STE.

Good comparisson but there's so much more too it. I don't even want to complain too much about STE. I played it a bunch and enjoyed it, but it gets repetative after a while and it's not fun enough for me to feel like it's a life style impact. HD2 is something I actively think about most of the day and can't wait to play when I get home. It's so thoroughly well made and true to it's own fantasy and values and the scale of it is nothing short of impressive. HD2 however probably cost in both time and money many times more than STE so comparing them on even terms would be very unfair and I think there's time enough in our lives (eventually) to play both.

"HD2 is something I actively think about most of the day" is something you just can't say about many games along the year we play them. It's the music, the fun, the cinematic crazy explosions, the different planets with different "faunas", the dynamics of each planet, the 9 steps difficulties to go trough alone or friends. Soo many things in the game that just makes you play more and welcomes you every time with the best fun and well done cinematic ingame trailer❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@noonyabeezniss4911 true that. at least in HD2 they communicate alot on social media, they try to patch bugs in small portions to avoid breaking the game completely. 350k helldivers almost daily is something. I meet some bugs in game (the other type of bugs) but I still enjoy it on a daily basis trying to push up on the fronts they are throwing us at with the orders. Discord is a big friend in here as I made dousins of friends and I have with who to play and if lets say game got stuck on loading screen(like last night) we just restarted the game and jumped in the mission we wanted without too much haslle.

Helldivers hypes you up, gets you excited to fighting for fascis-- i mean managed democracy and immerses you in missions ready to kill bugs and bots. It is a deeply cinematic experience with its third persion view and the weight and impact of every shot fired. Helldivers 2 will only get better

I've been playing helldiver's 2 since release, and you're right, there were bugs and still are, but you're also right that arrowhead did it right. I mean they just released the second warbond today. They have content ready for us now, it's just amazing the changes they've consistently made already.

Idk in starship, everything just felt worse. Animations were whack, the gun play felt terrible, hit markers feel cartoonish, etc. Helldivers looks beautiful, gunplay feels great, good variety of missions, it’s live service, good variety of guns/stragems with more being added at a good rate, etc.

Some players don't like that the enemy is controlled by Joel. But I think it's really cool that the enemy we fighting is not an algorithm, but and actual mind, someone who can actually think, and create strategy.

With starship one issue is its pc only at the moment and I know so many console players who would happily drop £30-£40 on this even for the early access. Honestly helldivers 2 maps pretty much all look the same well feel (I have over 200 in HD2) and it is very repetitive as well

haha yeah I did know, but comparing a top down 1 with a 3rd person 2 would not be fair. Nearly comparing chess and actual war. STE and HD2 are very similar and yes, each have their own quirks and pro's, but for player retention, entertainement, ammount of content, etc, everything, HD2 comes out on top. Well except the 1rst person camera and the base building. However, if we take into account what players want, only the base building folks would prefer STE. Thanks for the sub :)

love both games , but that's the issues with early access game its defiantly a double edge sword, yes sure they get funding for the game but you get alot less content from the start as you are just playing a demo, an once you have unlocked everything with in the currant 3 class's, not much left to do at all beside the game witch again has 2 maps, while HD2 has like 13 pages of unlocks both regular an premium then you have, around 50 stratagems to buy and 3 upgrades for part of the ship, and daily mission and steam achievements too keep plays busy and lastly there are about 8 biomes with different mission types that are randomly made, it just has a lot more to give to the players and keep them interested. I never even torched the GM and the story tuff.

Both games are great. To be honest, Helldivers is a knockoff of starship trooper. If i really want to play as a mobile infantry and feels like I'm in my favorite movie killing arachnids, then I play STE. Helldivers is a differ atmosphere, especially playing from fps to 3rd person and a different lore. Like I say, both games are great and I'll still play both.

After playing both games for a considerable amount of time, I find that playing SST Extermination can become monotonous and repetitive. As a result, I tend to spend more time playing HD2 in Arrow. While playing SST, I often find myself thinking about why I am not engaged in combat with my fellow players in HD2 and feel like I am wasting my time. Consequently, I usually do not play more than one map of SST. Currently, I only play HD2 as it provides me with everything I need.

^Sure, and I did point that out, however, as is, getting a full match with 16 people is very difficult at the moment. With less than 300 peaks, unless the whole community agrees on a game mode and mission type, odds are very few matches are full. I would even say, outside peak hours, it's near impossible.

Lets face it, Helldivers 2 has Sony money behind it, Arrowhead studios had the luxury of spending 8 years to develop this game, they don't have to rush out the game because the budgets are tight, and were able to make a more complete game at launch. While STE is made by a small studio and publish the game by themselves, it's probably not making sense financially to spend years in the dev cycle, that's why the early access is there to help studios that lack funding but still wish to make a game.

Just thought I would add to this with, could you imagine helldivers 2 but in Warhammer 40k? Where a squad of 5 Space Marines drop down into a city or village being attacked by tyrranids or necrons? Or having to redeploy to a central system because of a chaos rift and some demons are creating havoc? And calling in support from a Titan? or Some npc Adeptas Sororitas? OOOOHHHH I'm officially moist right now xD

Answer.... both i love either of them. Def helldivers has more content and replayability. Extermination can be an amazing team shooter. I have high hopes for both. Extermination will get there. Helldivers is already there. Be patient with Extermination guys. Its coming. I encourage you all to get back in it (if they add some fat content)

I find it sad that Helldivers pulled the rug out from under the original IP, but I'm sure it's going to motivate - and help - the devs to make their product even better. What I'm really hoping is that they both use the competition to make their products perfect, and then COLLABORATE to bring the playerbase together. They have a unique opportunity to make this happen. Imagine preferring to be a Starship Trooper, or simply preferring 1st person mode, and still being able to play with Helldivers by your side, or in competition, or even against them, and vice-versa...

If you want a final thought about the game at this very second then i'll say this, if they waited and released STE with the Galactic War already in then yeah, I would maybe put it on par. The early access was a gamble and I hope they got the funding because I dont see many people leaving helldivers 2 to play STE. And the player numbers corroborate this. STE 1300 playing right now. HD2 250000 just on Steam...

i now also own hell divers 2 still starship troopers does it better and more fun game mechanics and quality of life are better like empty mag reloads and being over welmed still lets u play and fight when hell divers r run out of ammo and need to reammo takes ages if u can get it and its not used by some one else then u would have collected even more enemys u wont have the bullets to kill lol and the nurfing isnt gr8 ether starship troopers on the other hand has made new class system whicg works and i just wished there where some eu servers but never mind 0.7 patch is still fun and lots to do agein im enjoying it even with the lag anf the odd server fault i do like the calling in system of HD2 tho thats cool

Clearly you never played the other OWI games. In Squad you don't have magical reloads. Post Scriptum the same. STE has the arcade reload where bullets magically find their way into the mag. HD2 does a fantastic job and makes you manage your ammo. I play helldives and very rarely have difficulty restoking with ammo, maybe because I take the time to aim and make the bullets count so I don't need to resupply that often. But in the battle of HD2 vs STE, the player numbers say everything. STE 1300 right now, HD2 250000 just on steam. For the foreseeable future, it's pretty much case closed on this one. HD2 wins hands down.

@@TheOnlySillySocks there has been a huge marketing campaign for hd2 and all I do Is ads so much so its one tap right click and 2 tap ads I just don't call down ammo and things till I'm depleted and the reloads in ste make u manage it too if u had played u would know if u empty a mag compleatly u have to go thro the cooking cycle agein which makes the diffrence between life and death im saying on extreme and hard on hd2 does not matter u can empty all ur ammo on a swarm I will say I have a disadvantage not playing on a pad as I can't run and call in things at the momment but I'm going to try and change to arrow keys to bring that back and I'd say the random in hd2 are less team play and more out for them selfs when currently every activity get up and help players back to there feet due to the ticket system id say ste is still the better game even in early access.. oc ur Intitaled to your opinion and I like the ships in hell divers and the fact they rip off so many iconic things put it on 1 game to make it unique and fun is gr8 👍 but if u like I'll twitch me playing u can check it out for ur self I turned level 20 yesterday but I play alot with my mate Sam and we compleat everytime I'm just criticising the game I will say I hated the keyboard layout on hd2 and the fact u can't just switch to ads with a key stroke is stupid too I get the blind firing thing but u never miss why not play with a permanent aim Dot on the screen lol

Ok, Im level 90+ on STE and level 60+ in HD2. I have played both, and if you had a quick look at the channel you would see that. I am one of the few if not the only youtuber to follow every update on STE. I love the idea and the skeleton of the game. But it's not nearly enough. You like STE more, fine. But is it objectively a better game than HD2? No it's not. Not for the moment and not for the near future. It just cant compete. Galactic war has to come out, more maps, at least 4 to add the feel of a war on multiple planets, Streamline the game play to the war map where we can see the missions currently taking place like in HD2 to bring back players together and keep the 16 player full matches. There is just a lot of work ahead mate. But again it's fine if you like STE more. But its just objectively better than HD2.

I'm just grinding out hd2 at the momment for samples and bits its fun enough like the strategums and the call in system not a fan of how it plays on keyboard and mouse compared to the pad and i just don't feel good on the pad so back on the keyboard and mouse but like I said I have got around the issues like right lick and double right click for aiming

Reviewing and comparing 2 games one is at least a year away from being ready for a 1.0 release and the other is out. your talking about it don't have a lot of players when in fact there is a good little amount and early review titles never have 10s of thousand of players they usually have around 5 thousand and STE is in early release on epic games store also so don't take steam charts as the only place people play. last epoch was in early review since 2019 and just released this year it never had a lot of players but once they announced 1.0 released the hype went through the roof and they broke ARPG records in player number's over 400 thousand to be exact. BTW Today at 1 Pm STE is releasing it's biggest Update to date the 0.7.0 update is huge. the thing about early release titles it give them time to get feed back and add what the community wants and learn what they don't like. and STE is a very good game it just isn't finished. this video is the dumbest review on the internet comparing a unfinished game to a full complete game in fact it would have hurt the hell divers devs to have released a early review of there game maybe it wouldn't have launched with a million bugs causing crashes and performance issues. I love Hell divers 2 but I also love STE. STE will do really well when it releases. Unlike helldivers that's on a outdated game engine this is a fact btw. STE is on UE5 that alone gives the devs a lot more tools to do more with the game. STE 1.0 launch wont have as many bugs either due to them taking care of them now I have played a lot of both games and STE has been by far more stable than HD2 but comparing 2 game before one fully released is below common sense level of thinking. and complain about an intro has nothing to do with how good a game is. sure it's cool but ranking a game because of it is crazy. with still a year or a little more before it releases I could see this if the game was about to release 1.0. but someone comparing the 2 right now blows my mind. the STE Devs hasn't even advertised there game yet. it's obvious witch games gonna have the most content anyone with a brain knows this. I cant wait for the New STE update today more mission 6 new classes more customization for weapon's updated progression system world event's and a lot more + a ton of quality of life changes. Your comment has a hell of a lot of wishful thinking, blind faith and masked hope. Both games can be played right now, both games are available for purchase on steam, and the price difference isn't that revealing. STE is at least a full year if not more behind HD2, and not acknowledging STE will have to compete with an established game, with a strong community like HD2 when it finally releases is very disingenuous. But, time will tell, as always, and we shall see if 1, STE is finished, 2, how much HD2 matures and keeps its community engaged, and 3, if STE will release in a good enough state to have the numbers you claim it might have. I don't think so and so far I only see it going the post scriptum route, now squad 44. It had to compete with hell let loose and clearly lost. And remember, Squad went through teething problems for over 5 years until actually becoming a good enough game to retain a decent enough base. Post scriptum couldn't shake off the competition and beyond the wire was just a waste of development time and money.
