Yeah, it's interesting how a lot of these seem easier and more comfortable for thick/curly hair than a lot of modern hairstyles (such as tight ponytails with hair elastics). They were working /with/ the texture, not against it. (Also as someone w/ super thin, limp hair, I am very very jealous)

But mediterraneans had, and have, curly hair. (I'm editing this 2 years later 'cause i saw MANY RACIST comments below. People literally WANTING TO BE WHITE LOL... I just remember writing here 2 years ago about someone saying something like "to do this hairstyle I didn't know I had to have a messy hair... CURLY RULES and I'm blood proud of my natural hair.) This woman's hair is just like my mom's hair. She's Greek and Spanish so her hair is super dark and really frizzy with tight-ish curls. Sadly it became too much work for her to maintain and it made her really hot. I really wish I got her hair texture because I think it's so beautiful, but my dad is English and Welsh and Scottish and I could go on, so his hair is PIN STRAIGHT. I got the frizz from my mom, but my hair is pretty straight. My brother got the curls, so he has an afro when he lets it grow out. Lucky bastard.

If your hair is "straight but frizzy" it's probably wavy! If you treat your hair as wavy or curly instead of straight, you'll probably notice you have more texture than you think. I thought mine was straight too, but as it turns out it's very curly when I treat it as curly.

Papillonerratique I have crazy thick hair, however it's not curly. I would suggest using some dry shampoo on day old hair and a crimping iron, or a wand to get the curl desired. The dry shampoo creates the "grit" and the curl will/should hold the curl.

There's so many comments about one hair pin not being enough, but it really depends on your hair. When my hair is long I can twist it into a bun and, as long as I tuck the ends right, the bun will hold without a tie. And when I was younger my sister used to wear her hair up with just one pen or pencil holding it. I thought that style was common in the 90's/early 2000's, but I guess not.

I was portraying an evocation of Greek war goddesses (Athena, Enyo, Eris, etc) in a dance recently, and I found this video for inspiration on how to do my hair. Unfortunately my hair is too heavy and short to hold a French twist without looking ridiculous, so I basically just pinned a low ponytail up against the back of my head, tucking the ends in behind it 😅 The ribbon part looked a little more like the video, except I had a flat plastic ribbon instead of a fabric cord, so I had to pin it as well as tie it. Ah well. I'm sure there were Ancient Greek women who had to make do with heavy, short hair and cheap materials, too!

It felt like she rushed so much. She failed to make sure the hair was properly holding before adding the ribbon and decorative wrapping. The end result was unstable in look and actual hold. Pity, looks easy enough to do but needed way more than just one pin... at least 2, but 3 would be best.
@salxandra6 жыл бұрын
the bodkin may have been too skinny for that thick of hair. And she's not showing bodkin technique which I find is very dependent on the hair texture. so, yes, this style will work with very fine hair, you just need to know how to place the bodkin. One bodkin would easily hold my thin, straight hair, and I'm presuming but one appropriately sized bodkin would have worked for her thick hair. Just watch youtube hair stick videos and it becomes clear that it is technique not texture.

As a person, who often puts her hair up using a chopstick and has fine, straight hair, it is a question of how tight I place the chopstick. Often, I need it a tad loose as I can't take the pain, but I also have no difficulty in flipping it back into a bun at a moment's notice. No mirror, and it's secure again. It has to do with technique. I often skip "weaving" the pin through the hair, and then, my hair will loosen easier It's really how much messing with my hair I will tolerate. If I was to go out and run with a hairpin, I'd weave it and toss a small twist in the hair to lock the pin in place, and it won't move and it wont be too tight.

I have hair about the same length as the model, but it has absolutely no volume or texture. Would this style simply require more bodkins or would I have to let my hair dry in braids first to achieve enough volume to wrap and to give the ribbon something to hold?

Lucy Took The techniques for straight hair are different. That is a future video. cheers, Janet
@cerridwen209 жыл бұрын
Lucy Took Many ancient greek women on vase paintings seem to have been blessed with naturally curled, thick, dark hair. If you want to have more volume to your hair, it helps to make small braids in wet hair and leave them in overnight or use other (modern) curling methods (like papertowel curls) in order to get a similar structure of hair. To get more grip and volume, I have also already used babypowder (use lightly :-)) or dry shampoo to my hair. Of course that is all modern methods to achieve hair that would have been naturally given to women then. With wrapped hair or hairnets you also have the chance to "cheat" a little by using fake hair extensions which is not at all uncommon throughout history.

I use one all the time.. or a pen.. pencil.. chopstick.. it works because of the tension of the twist, and piercing through the layers of the twist. I can easily twist my hair into a bun, then poke a stick through from top to bottom. It'll loosen up a bit, so the stick ends up being at a 45 degree angle or even sideways, but it holds. If it *does* get too loose, it's only a matter of seconds to get it put back up again.
