Very well said Dave,I now have 20 deer coming onto the red clover field and are not bothered at all.I have a sanctuary on one side all year long and this really really is excellent help.

This year was different than most here in Midwest. Massive acorn crop. There are even some left here in early December. Usually gone by late October. So it’s been a strange year. Deer numbers are up a little, but I still have an acre of beans left that’s usually ate to the ground by now. I also broadcasted cereal grains so greens and grains will be phenomenal in these next couple weeks. Just need a cold front.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors11 ай бұрын
Perfect. Those beans should definitely be amazing when it gets super cold.

Going to do a 3rd row thining of the pines this winter and run fire through it in late spring early summer. Should help getting more browse and cover.

I highly recommend and prefer "select cut" over clear cut.

Same here in most cases.

Clear cut 5 years ago. Overgrown thorn thistles everywhere now. Need a control burn.

Very common with clever cuts for sure.

If anyone wants some good stem count trees that are invasive and deer love, try boxelders. They look like crap and are almost useless but deer love them!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors11 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Had several on my old farm deer would tear up

Put in a food plot behind the house 3 years ago with thick brush between it and the woods. Shot deer from my hunting shack 50yds north of the food plot 3 weekends straight during late season. However the bigger bucks only used it at night and got edgy. So I an redoing it Noth of the hunting shack and further from the house. Also relating it to bedding and having a way in that isn't to close to the bedding
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors11 ай бұрын
Sounds good. That’s a very common issue if the bucks aren’t bedding close enough to food.

I cut a 1/4 acre of mature poplar trees (probably 20 or so) expecting a root sprout explosion and go zero. I don't know if it is because my property gets overtaken by ferns in the spring/summer months or due to to much ground covered by leaves or something else. I just know that is would seem not all properties are going to experience an explosion of woody browse from select cuts/ clear cuts or refine cutting a specific area, would you say that is correct?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors11 ай бұрын
How long ago did you cut? Is enough sunlight getting to the ground? Cuttings can produce stump sprouts and or root sprouts pending what you are cutting. Also how much light is coming in etc. Ferns are terrible hate them things lol. They shade out anything under them. I would spray the ferns in the spring when they are coming in. Spray as many as you can. Wipe them things out. Clear cuts usually create an explosion of regrowth just from all the sunlight and all the tractor equipment disturbing the soil.
@gregallman371511 ай бұрын
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Plenty of sunlight and cut 1 1/2 years ago. I'll take your advice and kill the ferns and see if it can make a bit of difference. Would be be nice to get some more herbacious growth on the property. Thanks for all you do for us Dave. Good, genuine advice!
