@@Nahbruhsheeshthere was a case in Palm Springs that sort of illustrates this but without deaths or injuries. A woman bought a vacation home to be near her father when she had time off. Turned it into an AirBnB for when she was at work about 500 miles away. She ended up getting squatters. AirBnB wouldn’t help her evict them until her sister whose a newspaper reporter started writing stories about this. Thing is in Palm Springs there are property management companies that deal with renting out your properties. But they are more expensive than AirBnB and for good reason.

That’s not how it works. They shouldn’t even of gotten community service. Code violations fall under ordinances not laws. Which means they are civil infractions. The punishment should come from civil litigation not criminal litigation. Sad situation all around.

They improved their property for financial gain without the proper permits, inspections, or required safeguards, obviously to save money. My wife, children, and I have performed community service multiple times the sentence they received and never committed a crime. And I'm sure there are many other families like us out there as well. Good as they may be, they got off easy.

probably a gas leak that found an ignition source. maybe they used connectors that weren't meant for gas, or they connected a neutral to ground to save a wire. Or didn't use outdoor-grade electrical conduit or boxes, and water got in and froze and damaged the wiring, then someone left the gas on low and an ignition source made a fire. Just guesses.

I hope that there are civil repercussions with major awards to the remaining victims. This never had to happen if not for the negligence and unauthorized property additions. This is a downside to streaming things for convience and time. Traditionally you go to a villa or hotel, but now that you are renting from someone s house, there's a multitude of factors involved. Is the same with food delivery and uber rides. You will get a variance in service and product. Be aware of the downside as well. This is very unfortunate 😢.

You don't even have to install them. You go to the store and buy one, you put a nail on the wall and hang it. That's what I did in my last rental home. There were smoke detectors in the hallway at the end of the house but it was a long house. So I bought two smoke detectors on my own and put them in the far bedroom and the office. I tested them regularly, they most definitely would have worked in a fire. I really recommend that anyone going to an airbnb, and frankly even hotels these days, get a combo carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm. They're only about $14 and you can fit them in your suitcase. It could save your life.

This was for sure negligence, I’m not sure how they were criminally prosecuted as code violations are normally not laws but city ordinances that cannot be punishable by jail time.
