I like to press the long, long strip right after the very first pass. It takes a little while, but it's worth it, because then you have half of your pressing already done, and you don't have all the other seams getting in your way when you're trying to press the whole big thing at one time. That helps me a lot. Just an idea. I know a lot of people hate the pressing part, but my Mama taught me to press as you go. 😎

Hi dawndaly. I think the small squares are meant to be a feature to break up the colour a bit. If you don’t want them, just sew the jelly roll strips without them. Should still look lovely.

Quick question - if you wanted to do a queen size quilt would you use 3 jelly rolls?
@TheKjoy85
@TheKjoy85 3 ай бұрын
I would do 3, maybe 4, rolls for a queen size. I don't know the dimensions off the top of my head, but some quick math should get you the answer you need. Divide the length of your quilt by 2, to give you the desired number of rows. Divide the width of your quilt by the length of the strips in the rolls to get the number of strips per row. Multiply the number of strips per row by the number of rows to get a total number of strips needed for the quilt. Then divide that by the number of strips in the jelly roll to the number of jelly rolls needed. Keep in mind that for every strip needed, you will need a 2.5" square in your accent fabric. I hope this helps.
@TheKjoy85
@TheKjoy85 3 ай бұрын
Math example: Queen quilt is 90"×108" Jelly Roll is 40 strips @ 42" strips. 108 ÷ 2 = 54 rows 90 ÷ 42 = 2.14 strips per row 54 × 2.14 = 115.71 strips 115.71 ÷ 40 = 2.89 jelly rolls So, yes. You can make a queen-size quilt with 3 jelly rolls. Double check this math with the exact specifications of your jelly rolls since they can vary. I say buy a 4th jelly roll to use as a scrappy binding.

Did you alternate the direction of sewing? I mean to say so you won't get a curve in the final project. When I do a jelly roll race quilt I do the rows 5 times for a total of 64 strips across. 1's become 2, 2's become four etc. Until you get 64.
@SewYeah

We usually do recommend alternating sewing direction, as you said, for a straight finish. Thanks for the tip!

A question for anyone: has anyone made one of these highlighting a fabric where you cut a 4 1/2 x 42 inch strip from yardage. Add it in after sewing the first two strips together? I am trying to picture the process in my mind so that you would have a main focal block in the pattern.
