Great timing on this video. Last month I took the 3G stick test at school and passed 5 months ahead of graduation and probably going to do the 6G next just like this one in the video. Thx for all the pointers. If you watch your hyper speed I noticed your stick oscillation was much better at 27:33 - 27:49 and that was some of your best beads. I had to definitely let the metal cool down a little more often between passes a to keep the beads from sagging . Love the the drive and determination to kick 6Gs ass. Can’t count how many times I stuck a rod and threw it across the room. That was CLASSIC at the end 😂😂😂!!!!

Hope you can get something good from it. That’s a great suggestion on letting it cool longer between root, and cap. Lol, I’m not gonna pretend that it doesn’t get frustrating sometimes. You know how it goes. Thanks again for the encouraging advice and thanks as always for watching.

I know I’m a little late to the game but I just discovered your channel and a new sub. I’ve been a certified pipe welder ( 6g sch 80) for 25 years and one small suggestion is a stringer cap. I used 1/8- 7018, 3 bead stringer cap. No real movement other than dragging it and overlapping each bead by 1/2. I enjoy your videos, keep ‘em comin and best of luck to you!

I am right there with you. Just started a couple of days ago prepping some 2-7/8 pipe but I have to hand bevel it. 25 year backs I certified with high pressure (tig root and hot pass with 7018 filler and cap on 6") but let my cert lapse and never thought I would weld much. Now I am trying to start it all back up as a side hustle. Something you might try is lowering your coupon and putting a file in the end of the pipe so you an put your weak arm over it and steady it more or you can take a clamp and put it on the channel and prop your weak arm against it so you can be more steady. I have used files, vice grips, clamps, etc. I am sure you will find a way. ----- Just some ideas from one welder to another.

Nice video and solid progress! I’ve only had to take 1 6g test but the procedure was job specific which wasn’t very common. I had 6” pipe, only the top piece had a bevel, a chill ring for a backer, 7018 root, and .045 dualshield the rest of the way out. It was alittle tricky for me bc I’m an ironworker so my pipe welding history was pretty limited to tube braces and handrail for the most part. After a few practice mockups I was able to pass. For me I found that if I chick the rod in the stinger angled down towards the base of the stinger I can just roll my wrist around and it eliminates the natural push angle that I run into as i progress uphill. Also I tend to run tighter stringers and more passes so that I don’t have to fight the undercut as much. Maybe some vice grips clamped on somewhere for an elbow rest, or possibly another bracket with a small chunk of pipe welded to it for an elbow rest? Comfort is key and practice is king!

All good suggestions. I just ran one tonight with 2 cap passes instead of 1, and it went pretty good. I’m sure I’ll get there. Just gotta see what works for me. That does sound like a unique test that you had to do. Thanks for the suggestions and thanks for watching.

I DIG IT DUDE!!! I am a NDT guy. ASME IX is hard to do, dude. Things pretty much have to be perfect. Like the rounded indications are are 1/8” or 20% of the wall thickness. Whatever is the smallest. You know how to weld, so you will get it. You just have to keep at it dude. There are a lot of ways to do this test. You just really have to find out what works for you. I have weld some pipe in the 6G and Iam not there yet to pass code but it was fun. Just a little bit more for me , then I got it. Keep crushing it dude.

Hey man I’ve been watching for a while never really comment on anything but I’m a big fan. I’ve been a welder for about 15 years and I love your videos, just a tip on this test I’ve had success with if your open to it, when it comes to the 7018 part, I would be down between 75-80 amps and run small circles (basically stringers) and make a two bead cap. Big fan and keep up the awesome videos

Glad to have another experienced welder that’s a fan. That means a lot. I appreciate the advice I guess I didn’t really mention it, but I’ve been running a backwards “e” oscillation, and I feel like it’s been working ok. @@Freedomfabrication777 I find your channel to be the most laid back in my opinion it’s easy to watch and down to earth. The only reason I have success with the two bead cap is because I find it is the only way I don’t have huge build up so splitting the cap into two bead makes me move faster and the circles help me hold my edges just enough to not have undercut. I love the practice videos I’ve spend many days in my garage practicing for tests and no one ever sees that side of it. You got a supporter here man love the channel.

I will never discredit any certification. My point was that the “certified welder” talk gets thrown around a lot. Some of the best welders I know aren’t technically “certified”. That was my point. I hope I didn’t offend you with that. It was not intended.

In the early part of the video you said, maybe jokingly, that you wanted to be certified from 2” to 24”. Pipe certification ends at 12”. Pipe welded beyond that range reverts back to a plate certification. It’s funny when people say they are a “certified welder”. When in reality they can pass a certification test for “ Engineer 1”. Walk across the street, where they meet “Engineer 2” who doesn’t have to accept that “certification “ even when the ink hasn’t dried.
@Freedomfabrication777 Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t remember what the largest size the certification included was. If it is 12”, that’s my mistake. I agree with the “certified welder” comment. That was the point I was trying to make in the video. I think being a good welder doesn’t come down to tests and certifications, it comes down to taking pride in your work, and taking the proper steps in weld preparation and knowing how to use the right process for the job to make a sound, clean, and yes, I’ll say it, a pretty weld. That’s just my opinion though. Thanks for watching!

Dude, why 2"80? weld out the monster...... unlimited dia. unlimited wall thickness and its about a billion times easier. Also 3/32" 6010?? eff that 1/8" 5p+ all the way with a 3/32" gap and land. Also that stand is,wayctoo fckn high, on your bad side it's too awkward and difficult to get the correct rod angle and that's why you are blowing out the top. What code are you testing to? I'd assume asme section 9 so you can trash that 6" and 2" sch 80 pipe the monster will more than suffice unlimited dia. and 1 1/4" wall thickness.
@grizzly_mint82048 ай бұрын
Most pipefitter type jobs will give a sched 80 test because its just about the most difficult thing to weld and on a sched 80 if you run a 1/8 6010 root it will most likely be above flush and the cap would be to big
