It's really bad for washing cleaning supplies with. It will add streaks to shiny surfaces and the cloth becomes almost hydrophobic which means it's hard to clean up wet surfaces and hard to get the cloth wet for cleaning dry surfaces.

@@JodBronson Baking soda in general is not that good for cleaning and makes the labor much more. I run a commercial cleaning business. If I used baking soda I would take 10x longer to clean because it leaves haze behind that you must go over with water so many times. It's also too rough for most surfaces. It will destroy them in months with regular use. It is bad to use on your cleaning cloths.

I'm late to the party on this video, but as folks are super pumped to try this (for good reason), there's only one thing I'd urge folks to remember: Modern day washing machines did not exist back when things were all environmentally friendly and "natural". Block soaps, as many other commenters have mentioned, will leave a residue/scum if not scrubbed off (someone made the reference to a bathtub). In the good ol' days, clothing was laundered with natural soap blocks, but it was all done by hand on a washboard, hand wrung and rinsed. Call this the "scrubbing" of the tub, and there weren't machine cogs or pipes to block up. Bleaching clothes was done by boiling it and hanging it in the sun (my grandmother did all of her laundry by hand, and she did this to my clothing--it'll take the ink right out of your printed shirt, but MAN will it make it white!!) I still do this to dingy white socks to bring the vibrancy back. Maybe doing one load with an eco-detergent, and one with a homemade detergent (alternating) will help prevent build up, but if you do this to your machine for years without giving it a good hand cleaning, I wouldn't expect your machine to last as long as it is marketed to, otherwise. Going through washing machines faster defeats the purpose from both a cost-savings, and an environmental standpoint.

your mum was great... my grandmother washed everything by hand too... regular soap creates a build up but castile soap should not... the vinegar rinse also helps keep everything clean in the machine... I have been told it works in HE washing machines too.

Soap berries (also known as soap nuts) work wonderfully as well! A single ingredient that you can use several times over before discarding. I bought them to wash my nut milk bags because I just couldn't find a non toxic soap. Now I aim to incorporate it into all other washing scenarios at home (like for dishes and maybe even general hand washing as well).

No irritations no issues. Long before liquid soap came out. I still make my own liquid laundry soap using grated Zote, washing soda and borax and water. Simmer and done. Hi, yes they do harden a bit. To me, it is less stiff than drying on a line outside, but still, not soft as if you used a dryer. It is not for everyone. I have a sister who would never give up her dryer! As for me, I just give my clothes a shake and they soften up when I put them on. I'm not a very delicate creature in that way, I run a wee farm and am used to hard work and regular cuts and scratches. So, the softness of my laundry isn't a worry for me. 🍀

Great idea. Oftentimes we wash clothes to often. Levi’s use to promote that you wipe off your jeans, any stains with a damp cloth, then fold and place in the freezer to freshen. Constantly pitting them in water breaks the fibers down much quicker. By simply putting a cap full of fabric softner in a spray bottle is f water you can quickly refreshen lightly worn clothes and hang to wear again in the future...this saving a few washes. Hand washing is a great workout in more ways than one. I recently moved into an apartment and enjoy hand washing items and hanging them to dry near an open window. Ok...Just FYI about BORAX- It IS a NATURALLY occurring MINERAL in the environment! It is not a FAKE chemical...I have seen SO many posts that are just disseminating FALSE information and I had to say something. Now, just because it’s naturally occurring MINERAL in the earth’s crust doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good to dissolve in water and use for clothes washing and be then be distributed back out into the water table...However, our great-greats most likely had BORAX in their arsenals of cleaning supplies-especially here in the USA, where there are great big fields of it in the American Southwest...It was referred to as “white gold” because a couple who set out to prospect during the gold rush didn’t find gold near the Mojave desert-instead found themselves BORAX-and they became CRAZY rich boxing it up (Ever see 20 Mule Team Brand? yeah-that was the only way to haul it out and get it to market...Nifty Trivia for Pub Quiz!) and selling it worldwide! Borax-or sodium borate (and there’s a whole list of other scientific names this can be depending upon WHERE it’s mined-is an important BORON compound. The crystal of the dehydrated form-like the one our intrepid prospectors found near the Mojave-bone dry-is a white, colorless crystal that dissolve easily in H2O. It has served as a component of many detergents, cosmetics, used in enamel glazes (huge supplies of this stuff lying about in asia where they have used it for thousands of years for all sorts of things), metallurgy-even neutron capture shielding for radioactive things, a texturizing agent in cooking (in fact, it could be a part of that list of “natural” ingredients food companies DO NOT need to list on packaging-especially in ORGANIC foods by the way...it is a useful insecticide, fungicide, anti-bacterial agent, and all around cleaner! Legend (and science, archaeology) say Borax was first discovered in a dry Tibetan lake bed and became a very lucrative trade commodity on the Silk Road as far back as the 8th century C.E....and was spread as far as the Arabian peninsula and Northern Africa (as far south as Nubia). It was VERY, VERY expensive, luxurious stuff until enough of it was found out in the deserts in the U.S. that made it widely available for commercial use... Oh-and everyone complaining that this DIY business doesn’t work if you have “hard water”- sorry friends- it’s actually one of the BEST water softeners there are-and it prevents lime scale build up. I couldn’t find ANY scientific evidence that Borax is TOXIC to humans or to animals (remember its found in dried up, ancient lake beds-so it was dissolved in H2O). According to one source, it’s median lethal dose is (LD50) is tested at 2.66 g/kg in rats...that’s a whole lot of Borax in other words-in order to cause severe injury and or death in the poor rats it was tested on! It has been used as a pesticide for hundreds of years-that is until it was removed from the “safe list” for human use in the U.S.-I am guessing due to pressure of large chemical companies like Dow and Monsanto-so they could use their poison- in 1946. All restrictions have been removed since 1986-but damage to boric acid’s reputation has already been done, It’s poisonous to the minds of most people today. Only “over exposure”- to breathing it in in large quantities seems to remain a “problem” in the newest tests I could find carried out by the EPA 2006- that’s PRE-TRUMP....It’s a SVHC in the EU for pregnant and nursing women according to the EU-again in seriously EPIC amounts-but ANYTHING could be harmful in huge quantities-even water can kill you if you drink too much of it. The Journal of Toxicology (Google rules) concludes in 2012. that human boron exposure-even in the highest exposure rates are still too low to cause any noticeable damage. So...those of us who are trying to live a more earth friendly existence and tread lightly, leaving behind as few footprints as possible should really be doing our research before dismissing some of these old timey -I will say it-naturally occurring cleaning agents. Heck-it’s not even as caustic as the baked baking soda folks! Years and years of chemical companies trying to hawk their poison INSTEAD has lead to these wacky ideas...We need to do our own research! If not, we are ALLOWING these awful companies (Dow, Monsanto, etc.) to continue to disseminate false information and talk about “fake” science. Sorry it’s banned in Ireland...Perhaps it’s banned so the population will purchase the poison instead of the naturally occurring, fossilized remains of ancient lake beds! (And really, do you research...because just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s good! You know...Marie Curie learned that the hard way looking for Uranium...)! Cheers fellow travelers! Sending peace and love and hopes for a better world to all of you! B

Hey! I love your channel! I am a huge nerd and have nothing else to do with all these useless facts swimming around in my pumpkin! I certainly didn’t mean to target your channel in any way-really-I think this was the umpteenth recipe I happened to watch looking for a recipe that will do us good over here...We are trying to reduce our trash-and especially plastic usage! (It all started with seeing a starbucks green plastic straw sitting in some beautiful, pristine, clear blue reef in Hawaii last year-and it’s just turned crazy at our house!).... Anyway, I absolutely ADORE Ireland! I am an opera singer and had the pleasure to sing in the Wexford Festival a few years ago! I really cannot stress what a phenomenal experience that was! Really, the most wonderful audience in the world and I got to know the lovely local folks in Wexford Town-the hospitality was glorious! I am dying to come back! I can check out WHY Borax is banned in Ireland...And I feel like I am ready to flee the U .S! The things that loads of money can buy....Especially the corporations just looking to expand their bottom line at any cost! Obviously, folks who are already checking out this kind of thing are already more aware of what is at stake for our health and the health of our planet...It is still incredible how ideas-even patently false one get disseminated and become a part of the “truth” as we know it! We have to fight every day! Which you are doing lovely! Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas! I am a huge fan! Cheers!

Barbara Quintiliani I have no idea about borax being good or bad BUT what I do know is that the fact the something it’s a natural mineral (not chemically made in a lab) does not mean buy any extent of the imagination that is safe or good: asbestos and talc are natural minerals made by the earth in geological process, is that enough to say it’s safe? Don’t think so. I think most of people know that asbestos are the worst element/substance in the word and its not create it by man. Again I’m not rooting against borax or in favor just making people aware that natural does necessarily is equal to safe and healthy as advertisement try to make us think.

Right....I actually SAID that naturally occurring things don’t necessarily mean they are good...So, you did not actually even read my post you just started getting all upset-about nothing, really. What I said was that there are people all over the place calling Borax a dangerous (sort of lab made) “chemical”...If you bothered to read what I said-it was that basically Borax is a naturally occurring substance that is the fossilized remains of ancient lake beds and science, science, science...knowledge is power...and we need to really check things out because people LOVE bandwagons to jump on and there are loads of unscrupulous folks who take advantage of that fact...So. Anyway...maybe just take a sec to READ posts before you jump down people’s throats, ok? Like I mentioned how URANIUM is naturally occurring but you know, we wouldn’t want to play around too much with something like that. Basically I JUST said Borax is NOT a synthesized, lab-made CHEMICAL and actual RESEARCH shows it’s pretty harmless stuff for humans-but YOU do YOU-just know some REAL information... Wow. I love the smell of displaced righteous anger in the morning....Have a nice day. Cheers!

Wow, you really nailed it, didn't you? I can feel your anger in regards to ignorance :) To add my support to your post, I used Borax once when moving into a house that was infested with cockroaches (old, terrifying college student times). It killed them like a breeze. Sodium borate is a toxin and so kills roaches almost instantly because roaches have the habit of leaking their legs (like cats do) and so ingest the powder that was picked up by their little hair-like protuberations (sorry, not scientific terms here) when crawling over the powder. I also use boric acid (not borax) to make eye wash for the whole family. In the old days where I lived, boric acid solution could be purchased at the pharmacy to prevent and resolve eye infection. It has since disappeared due to all the eye products available by big corporations, many of which contain addictive substances. I agree with what you say: big corporations have worked on convincing consumers that they have the best solutions for everything and they rarely have our health or the environment at their best interest. We need to start looking for efficient but natural alternatives that prevent us from being exposed to unnecessary chemicals and that will not harm the environment. If everyone did the same, the world certainly would be less polluted. I've made many changes in my house in order to avoid pollution and laundry detergent is the next thing, thus my presence here. @yada yada You are correct, they should not be mixed before cleaning, because the result is mild salt water. But their reaction can be used as a cleaning agent. I like to deodorize drains by pouring down baking soda, then vinegar, letting it bubble away for like an hour, then follow with a kettlefull of boiling water. If you use baking soda to scrub anything, like your oven, it can be very streaky when wiping it off. Guess what helps wipe off all those baking soda smears...vinegar! I don't use them for everything, but they do have their uses!

This is basically what I use for washing my clothes! I'm none too afraid of palm or hydrogenated oils as their chemistry is extremely ideal for cleansing. All carbonyl based soaps will decompose naturally in the environment. A common missconseption is that sodium carbonate is not consumable. However any time you use baking soda for cooking it decomposes into "washing soda" releasing CO2 and water. That's what makes it useful as leavening agent.

@@FairylandCottage About 5 years or more. ALL soap, doesn't matter which kind. It's what happens when hard water mixes with soap. Expensive discovery; $500! Forgot to mention the smell of the laundry as well as the washer after a while bcuz the residue also traps dirt in the fabric fibers. Gotta go through a whole process to release it from the fibers (vinegar). Yeah, no more soap in m'stuffs 😊

@getoverthyself
@getoverthyself 5 жыл бұрын
@@joaniev9613 I also used vinegar, and still do as a natural fabric softener. Unfortunately it is not enough to break down the build up of soap. The repairman showed me the "soc"(filter) in the washer it was almost full of soap! He told me to buy some "washer magic" and run through a cycle with it to help break it down (also helps get rid of the odor). He said the socs in machines nowadays are no longer removable for cleaning. That was about 2 yrs. ago and so far so good. Machine is Kenmore Manual (not digital) Frontloader, 14 yrs. old. My former one lasted 25 yrs, so hoping if I treat this one right it could as well. Thank God I had one of those warranties that covered my whole house at the time so just paid $50. Also, careful mixing vinegar and bleach. I read that the fumes of those two together are toxic and deadly if inhaled
