It's design comes from the 1980s, just beyond the relay logic era. This is an old Thames Valley Controls controller.
Notice that the ropes are all nice and shiney - the lift has recently been re-roped.
PLEASE READ THE WARNING regarding motor rooms. I am an engineer and understand the dangers within these rooms. You'll notice the machinery is unshielded here - this machinery is unforgiving and you risk serious injury or even death by touching the wrong thing!

Very nice little controller love the status lights. You can hear the motor run at slightly different speeds when the lift is going up or down.

difficult to see which LEDs line up with which labels on the front panel though, unless you are standing in exactly the right place. I've seen a few of these TVC controllers now, one was in the old Keighley sainsbury's lifts that were knocked down in high wycombe - Keighley lift motor room from 1980s, during demolition see 2:40

Sounds like there is a lot of idle power being wasted there by a transformer. Once i put a power measuring thing on my amplifier which has no switch between the internal transformer and the cord. It was wasting about 60 watts/h non-stop, even when not turned on. Imagine what a transformer would waste when making the noise heard in this video.. :-)

I met Jeff Holmes of TVEE office in Pickering Ontario when I was a consultant and 15 years later I got a 2-year computer programming contract with CEC and Jeff was working for them so he was my go-to guy for the hardware & protocol info. I think I recall that TVEE were being replaced not because they were especially bad but because they were not common in the region, which is always a big problem. A curious situation developed because of rapid computer technology in which old relay systems like Otis 1960-1980 were easier to maintain than the early microprocessor systems because microprocessor systems changed so fast so pre-1995 microprocessor or some such was like the Stone Age and local maintenance providers didn't have a clue what to do if there was an intermittent issue because there's nothing to see about what's going wrong unless you have full computer internals and that tended to be kept secret/proprietary so you could maybe keep a 1975 Otis relay operating well enough into 2010+ but if there's an issue with a 1980s microprocessor then replacing with a modern microprocessor was your best choice not trouble-shooting/repairing. Think of your early Commodore Pet and if it started failing in 2010, would you take it to a shop for repair or buy a laptop ? Also, TVEE didn't have maintenance teams, they were 3rd party suppliers to local independents and I think they closed shop in Ontario and parts had to be ordered from Wales (was it Wales) so your local maintenance company can either knock themselves out trouble-shooting or tell the owner "look this stuff's obsolete, you can't get parts or support. We can replace it instead with this full package MCE Hollister_Whitney for only this terrific price". What do you think the local maintenance company would do ? Can't blame them, they are probably right usually. --------------------- In 1975 I wrote embedded computer program ("firmware") for a Fairchild F75 chip for Northern Elevator to improve that 2-speed A.C. (2SAC) machine in video by delaying the transfer from 1000 rpm to 250 rpm when slowing at a floor depending on the load in the car. Delay in 1/128ths of a second increment up to some maximum at full speed (probably 1 or 2 seconds) to reduce the creeping time and improve the level at floor. The theory was fine and I did correctly. Dunno if it worked for Northern because we were consultants doing that on the side because my boss knew Northern's owner and my boss was the top marks Electrical Engineer in Ontario in 1964 and he enjoyed pissing around with "cutting edge" computer-elevator projects instead of making money which was terrific for me because I enjoyed it too. So the possible flaw was that there was no device to measure the weight in the cab so we had to estimate it by accurately timing the time on an 8" vane (more weight, lowers faster) and I thought of primitive Artificial Intelligence in 1975 because I measured how accurate it did stop at the floor and then altered my table of adjustments to get it more accurate next time, so it was learning, Artificial Intelligence. It might not have worked at all or been used because if the concept that the time on the 8" vane was proportional to the weight turned out to be incorrect then there would be no way to make it work worth a damn. I never did get any feedback from Northern Elevator. --------------------- I'll tell you what a jump scare is. Sinclair Centre Vancouver is an atrium building complex of a city block. I switched off the disconnect switch in the machine room and instant I pulled the handle a deafening klaxon started in the room. I was quite nervous though you can't cause problems by turning off power after you've parked the car unless they have electrical issues. When I got to the atrium the entire complex had all these bells & klaxons going. When I reached the security desk and asked about the noise he said kids had pulled a fire alarm in another building and the whole block or two had fore alarms going on (fire trucks arrived then). I was relieved & went for coffee and apple pie. A jump scare is when you turn a big electricai switch off in a huge building complex like you've done hundreds of times and a deafening klaxon starts the instant you do it.

I am expert when it comes to electro-mechanical devices. I consider myself to be well educated in this area. I have been in two motor rooms in my life, once in an block of flats and the other was in san Francisco attheir YWCA. (It was cooed when I stayed there.My room was very close to motor room and I was able to get in and have a look... The main drive was from 1930s! Relayed, and no autotronics whatsoever. This has been the case for both motor rooms I had visited. The first one I was escorted by our building manager therein.

Question for you, while at work today I work in a theatre and there is a elevator right in front of the entrance and I saw Sparks comming from on top of the elevators control panel well near it, not sure if it actually was but I heard some poping sounds and a blue spark flash In 2 successions of each time the elevator went down, was wondering on your thoughts of what it could be, as soon as I saw that I immediately called mall security and reported it, even the maintance crew looked stunned.

>>Did you hear that… motor run at slightly different speeds when the lift is going up or down. If the elevator car is empty, it will move down slightly slower than up, the counterweight is much heavier than the empty car.
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 9 жыл бұрын
Алексей Рукин Yep, that's right. The CW weights the same as the lift car PLUS a 40% load. This means it's easier for the lift to run upwards. Also, if the lift got stuck and there was only a few people trapped in the lift, it's easier to hand-wind the lift in the upwards direction to the nearest landing.

Hi Paul, thanks for your comment! I know exactly the ones you mean, I've found a couple of lifts that may qualify such as this one from a long time ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6rZfopuhbdqpsU It's not quite the vintage model that you mean, ah, but how about this one... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZSahIqOfNKci8U Again, a long time ago and the quality is rubbish, but that's about it. A lot of the vintage lifts, although they've kept their interiors, most are modernised in some way to comply with H&S, but they do exist.

mrmattandmrchay Hi and Happy Easter to you both, first of all thanks for replying it's good to hear from you, I've spent many hours watching your lift videos, love them all, as for the links you sent me they were exactly what I mean and was fascinated watching them, am amazed they've been able to conform to h&s standards especially with gates that young kids could stick fingers through and my god the wiring looks really dodgy, I liked the door interlock I think they are called in the second video the basic switch as the door was opened and closed was amazing, I love old lifts and like you saddened to see the old ones modified. I think of you every time I visit Debenhams in Sutton in Surrey as although not really old they certainly don't have the modern floor and doors opening/closing voice announcement the buttons are very 80s and most don't light up as they should, the floor indicators are green 7 segment led's and not that bright either and even the car lighting is not that modern but adequate, from memory I think they are Otis but don't hold me to that lol. Thanks again and keep posting you're great videos, amazes me just how much there is in some motor rooms with loads of panels and circuits. Cheers, Paul.

Happy Easter to you also! I enjoy responding to comments, as I'm respectful that you guys who give me the views in the first place, so I do try and respond to most people. I've got a video coming up featuring an O&K machine room (part 1 is up already). The problem is, it's so cool I think I HAVE to go back and do some more in-detail filming! And I hear what you are saying about new lifts, to me they are just a means of transport to get from A to B and I have very little interest in them. Have a good day!

Relays and Contactors get dirt and stuff inside them and it start to cause noises like this. Usually giving them a bit of a smack can sort them out although sometimes due to how old the contacts are they will do this constantly. This noise isn't just subject to Relays and Contactors, anything that is electric that is at a high enough voltage.

+Mr Penguin2 A CPU is a part of a computer. And any CPU needs a program to run, and needs inputs/outputs to be useful. Practically the same as the definition 'computer'. Though not a regular PC. I think you won't be able to find a lift on earth which is run by a regular PC. ;-)

+Mr Penguin2 O microcontroller or microprocessor. Could be implemented using a PLC, not sure. But not a real PC. Just imagine, "windows have installed new updates and needs to restart ... puffff".

As far as I know Thames Valley Lifts and Thames Valley Controls aren't the same company (however correct me if I'm wrong?) TVL is a generic lift company and TVC makes parts for people who assemble generic "off the shelf" lifts.

The video, the lift controls are great. But a bit of narration would of helped.@@mrmattandmrchay

@@UQRXD This is an old video from 2014 where KZbin was just a place to upload random stuff. My editing techniques and KZbin itself has advanced beyond recognition since 2014 when this video was uploaded. Had this been a recent upload, then I probably would have.
