That's actually what I thought! I grew up with a constellation light sphere and CD that I used every night that would throw stars on the wall and tell the stories of every constellation, so I have deep rooted knowledge of them. The second I hear this Pokemon's name I KNEW it was connected to Cetus and the spots made me think of the star spots on the sphere. Glad to see someone else thinking along that line!

Fun fact, there is a museum of cetaceans in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are known to have various cetaceans living there like dolphins, pilot whales and beaked whales, the last one probably what Cetitan is based on. Another posible inspiration is the Ningen, a cryptid famous among japanese sailors said to resemble a two-legged, white whale with human features. 9:40 Anyone in Europe and most of the World back then, the whaling industry was a very profitable business until whales became almost extinct. Only a few countries still hunt them to this day (coff coff, Japan, coff coff).

Because of its horn and its association with cold places, I agree that Cetitan is more or less the closest thing we have to a narwhal Pokémon. I'm not sure how relevant this is, but here in Chile (one of the many, MANY Latin American countries affected by Spain) there's actually a myth in Patagonia (a mostly artic region of Chile) all about a whale named Góos that, not only was capable of walking on land, but was also infamous for eating everything in its path every time it opened its mouth. And yes, by being an icy region extremly close to the South Pole, there's a lot of whales, especially the the southern right whale, look it up. I just really like the anatomy of how it's mouth/jaw functions. There's something about the symmetry, the way the horns feel like they swap places when the mouth opens, and the way the teeth/baleen kinda look like another face (the bottom are the teeth and the top two are the eyes with the horn as a nose) that makes me really enjoy the design. EDIT: Cetitan does, to me at least, look like he would fall forward? I'm not entirely convinced that its legs are big enough to support its main body given how far apart the legs are in conjunction with the size of its tail.

Narhwals are scientifically known as Monodon monoceros, "monoceros" means "one horn" is thus synonymous with "unicorn" but mythologically are separate one-horned beasts. Monoceroses have the body of a horse, the head of a stag (minus the antlers), the feet of an elephant, and the tail of a wild boar and a _black_ horn in the middle of the forehead that's one meter/three feet long. The Indian/Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros (as opposed to the Javan/Lesser One-Horned Rhinoceros aka Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) is also known as Rhinoceros unicornis btw.

The only thing you didn’t mention that I thought *might* be an element of design, is that the horns might be meant to resemble the Callosities on right whales? Those weird white lumps on their faces? I mean they’re not actually white, they’re actually the same color as the whales skin initially, but they pretty rapidly get so covered with whale lice that they look white. Yeah, it’s uhhh…. It’s pretty gross I only bring it up because, if they wanted to drive home the narwhal thing, they could have made the spikes spiny in some way, like if they were drills or something, so they looked a bit more like narwhal tusks. And these spikes do seem to be the same color as cetitans body, like right whales? The narwhal thing generally fits better, though, I think.

I am kind of obsessed with cetitan. I've already speculated a bit for competitive Cetitan will be busted when it becomes a water type and not ice type due to terastalizing. (and it used liquidation in the trailer) 1) originally weak to fire and steel, now resistant to them 2) at first rock and fire hit it supereffectivly, now it hits them supereffectivly. 3) even though it's now weak to grass, it's originally an ice type so it has great coverage. 4) slush rush will make it a threat, and I don't think it will be hit by hail (despite being a water type) just like how dracovish and dracozolt aren't hurt by sandstorm. 5) unconfirmed: it will almost definitely get earthquake/high horsepower for electric types I hope this is its stat spread (and I think it makes sense) Hp: 90 Attack: 120 Defense: 100 Special attack: 40 Special defense: 65 Speed: 75 (although it's heavy, I think it's still possible. I'd love to see an attempt to explain and create a fairly accurate ecosystem of pokemon. Like there's evidence that certain pokemon prey upon other pokemon like Heatmor prey upon Durant. Would take some time and research but this was kind of done for us in Pokemon Arceus and most predators don't upon just one species so there'd be a full ecosystem of pokemon similar to real ecosystems and food webs being made up of several animals. Realized most grass types would be at the bottom of the food chain technically.

Fun fact: Narwhales dont have horns. Thats actually a canine tooth. Thats why it isnt placed exactly on the symmetry axis of the head, but slightly more sideways, and thats why they sometimes grow two of those, because the other side of course also has a canine, which usually just doesnt grow to those extremes.

Still don't get the Narwhal comparison, the only similarities are the spikes, which are more likely just exaggerated versions on the Callosites found on Right Whales. EDIT: Even the arctic comparisons don’t work either, North Atlantic Right Whale’s scientific name is Eubalaena glacialis EDIT: Ok the Beluga aspects are a stretch at best

While it’s not a direct reference, the coasts of Spain are used as both breeding and hunting grounds by many different whale species. These include Blue whales, Right Whales, Spurm whales, Humpback whales, and Killer whales.

In addition to the Bowhead, Cetitan also bears a resemblance to the Right Whale, which is named as such because it was the 'right' whale for hunting and would easily float when killed...........kinda like an iceberg. I'm glad you mentioned the Ningen, I always thought it was an unusual but interesting japanese cryptid. In case people are curious it is indeed a japanese cryptid, but it is not a yokai like other japanese cryptids, and this is due to the fact that it is very recent, first described in the 60's, while the yokai are ancient in their origins. The closest whale yokai I can think of off the top of my head would be the Bake Kujira which is basically possessed whale bones and, yes I too think that would be an awesome pokemon. Imagine Spiritomb, but it's a whale.

I feel like the thick eyelashes could be related to beauty products. Ambergris is a product of a whale’s digestive system, and it sees good use in some perfumes. Of course it’s hard to represent a pleasent scent in a pokemon without making it it’s defining feature, so i feel like long eyelashes go well with a sense of beauty that perfume would have

One more aspect about Cetitan's design that I think is quite clever is that its hind limbs not only reference the vestigial pelvis and hind limbs in modern whales like the Bowhead, but also the fact that they can regrow them if their gene expression is altered, specifically a gene named Hand2 that regulates limb development in all vertebrates. Normally, this gene is silenced during embryonic development, but on rare occasions it can be reactivated via random mutations forming a pair of legs with all the major bones intact (femur, tibia, fibula, etc). I'm not sure if it has been documented in any Arctic whale species, but it was first reported in a Humpback Whale off of Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1919. Also it makes for a funny role reversal on whale evolution with Cetitan now returning to land making it secondarily terrestrial.

Jack Kirby put those circles on Thor for design purposes since back when he was drawing and Inking Thor inner comic panels were black and white. So adding the circles are a way to break up the negative space. The name of them are “Kirby Circles” or “Kirby Krackles” and a fun little story from comic buffs are Kirby added them cause he infamously loved checkers, but likely because to remove negative space.

5:11 Not really. Remember that whales are part of the Artiodactyla branch of ungulates - hoofed animals with even toes. That means they evolved from herbivores that split from the line leading to things like deer and giraffes. Of course, many in this clade would evolve into carnivores, including whale ancestors that became croc-like ambush hunters once they took to the water. However, prior to that, they grazed.

Cetitan’s 2 feet may be a reference to the fact that whales are a member of the Artiodactyla order, even though they have no feet. which is fitting as 0 is an even number. Not to mention the narluga, which a mix between a male beluga and a female narwhal (both of which are part of Cetitan’s origin in design)

I love the videos you make about the origins of Pokémon, really, they are brilliant. They make me appreciate Pokémon I didn't care for at first sight, they show the sheer number of real world facts that could have inspired the creatures, how the various inspirations could have played part in the design. They are wonderful, quality content. It speaks a lot on the research you and your team do and how attentive to detail you all are, being from Spain myself, I knew about the whale hunters and their story, and seeing that you included that fact made me very happy.
