The whole paint-in-the-mouth thing combined with the poison typing made me think of how old timey painters used to wet their brushes with their tongues. This was a terrible thing to do though since all the paint was lead-based and therefore toxic. Van Gogh was one such painter to do this. I wonder if there is a special connection between Iberia and lead paint? I know there was a story about Europeans believing Tomatoes (from the new world) were poisonous because the acidity of the fruit was absorbing the lead out of the plates the royalty were using and thus was killing them. Maybe this has something to do with the berries used to produce Grafiai’s poisonous paint. Either way, this little dude is pretty dope.
@darklordofsword2 жыл бұрын
It's also similar to how the indigenous Australians did some of their rock art, specifically the iconic hand silhouettes; take a bit of ochre in their mouths, press a hand to the rock face, and blow.
@rubiconprime14292 жыл бұрын
Did a little research. Turns out their were large lead mines in Spain that had been active since 3000 BC. Additionally, lead was used as a sweetener for wine in the Roman Empire which Iberia was of course a part of. This further connects to the note that Grafiai’s paint is sweet scented instead of sweet tasting. Of course the food was still toxic because lead.

Smart regardless
@Thekoodie2 жыл бұрын
I'd never heard of that reasoning for why the tomato was thought of as poisonous. I had always thought it was because it was a member of the nightshade family, which was known to be poisonous. Though I suppose the lead plate explanation would have solidified their fear of it's toxicity.
@darklordofsword2 жыл бұрын
@@Thekoodie kind of three parts; Nightshade connection Acid in the juice leeched lead out of pewter plates (note that the peasants, who had wooden plates or trenchers of stale bread, were 100% eating them) and the chemical reaction of tomatoes cooked in copper pots, which is poisonous.

@@MysteryMusic512 that would be a great concept, cause of pokemon were real, and you were a trainer , then using the environment such as looking for tracks, markings and say skat for instance or even sounds and smell or even patches of fur or scale (like shed skin from a reptile) would be a great way to track and locate pokemon, though not all of that in a game but I love the concept, makes it more immersive.

I hope this mon is competitively viable. He has really good abilities. And he's adorable. And he seems to be taking inspiration from all sorts of poisonous/venomous animals. The poisoned saliva reminds me of lizards more so than anything else, like Komodo dragons, or gila monsters, who have a dangerous bite. The sweet scent saliva that attracts and incapacitates bugs reminds me of Pitcher Plants which have a way of luring in prey. IT COULD also take inspiration the slow loris, a lemur relative that is one of the few (or maybe only) poisonous mammals. What a unique Pokémon. I love the name too that's fun. Graffiti+aye aye = Grafaiai. I hope it evolves maybe into a poison/fairy type THAT would be unique (and we need more poison/fairy mons aside from Galarian Weezing and more fairy dual types in general) and it would fit considering the slow loris has A TON of myths around them curing people, BUT fairies being fairies it could still fits the poison type. I was so shocked when Grafaiai was announced - aye-ayes are one of those animals people tend to look over when it comes to weird and creepy creatures. To see Game Freak notice this animal and turn it into a Pokémon is really great. Actually I think lemurs as a whole aren’t really appreciated when it comes to weird and funky animals. Aye-ayes are one of those animals I read about a lot growing up (since I loved books about all sorts of creatures) so to see it pop up in mainstream media made me unreasonably happy. (Funnily enough, I found this Pokémon first announced on Instagram and I didn’t see the name, but the long middle finger immediately made me think “Is that an aye-aye? DID THEY MAKE AN AYE-AYE POKÉMON?!”). Also sad fact about aye-ayes: because of how freaky they looked, lots of people killed them thinking they were demons.

I'm designing Pokemons and a new region based on my own homecountry, and I often struggle to come up with consepts for new 'mons, because I take it too seriously. I'm trying too hard to make every Pokemon have deep roots in the culture, like with Galarian pokemon had with brittish culture. I like Grafaiai 'cause it reminds me to think that it's okay to have "imported" pokemon in your region. To broader your thinking and digging deeper and deeper in history, while trying to connect it with something from modern times. Designing your own region should be fun after all, no point to take it too seriously. Also I love the fact it's an Ai Ai, an animal that's a long overdue as a Pokemon.

Because Portugal makes more than 50% of the worldwide production of cortiça. It's like, a third of the country is used just to make that. And it is a tiny country.

During the video I was thinking in telling you about the forest in Pais Vasco, but you mention it in the end, you did your work

I first heard of the Aye aye from the kids show Wild Kratts. It's the only animal that made it ok to flip the bird.

Okay but between the fingers covered in paint, the buck teeth, and the fact that the "spikey hair" also kinda looks like a baby bonet it's almost certaining a first form and evolves into probably a ring tailed lemur pokemon but also a slow luarace could make sense too. Lemur do spray chemicals with their Tails, although that may be to close to smergel but you never know.

As someone from Portugal this video is actually pretty accurate, one correction tho, when the video was doing a panning shot of the city while talking about Lisbon, the part it was panning to, the right side, is not Lisbon, Lisbon was on the left side where the panning shot was being shifted away

I really appreciate how the main reason for grafaiai being poison type is that it looks like it's eating paint

I did not notice Grafaiai was essentially wearing a hoodie 🤯

grafaiai looks like a very threatening pokemon, if it gets some good base speed and hp its gonna absolutely be a staple on my team if i can find it, i love the design and im really hoping he can carry his weight with unburden/belch

Fun fact about Madagascar (and Poland). There's a polish guy (Beniowski, altough several countries are arguing who's country citizen He is), accidentaly became a king of Madagascar.

Fun fact about aye-aye irl, it's said if one shows you it's middle finger that it's like a curse and "death will surely soon befall"
