David cold starts and parallels two Cat XQ2000 generators, each capable of generating 2MW of power individually or 4MW together!

Thanks for recording and posting this. I would have liked to have seen more of the actual "paralleling" process (you described the sincing meter but didn't actually show it) but appreciate the coverage of this topic.

Thanks for watching … we have more footage of that process. We just try to keep the videos intresting and not boring. I’ll get Steven to make an updated video that includes more of the nitty gritty process. We thank you for watching

Took Holt CAT power generation 1,2 &3 classes in Irving, Texas back in 2009. I still remember paralleling two large generators with a rotating digital display on the control panel. The generator's were wired to a very large load bank. Good stuff, thanks for the video!

When I was working we had the smaller version (3512) feeding a closed mode transfer switch to get us off shore cleanly. To sync quickly the generator was set to run just a little fast. Typical startup to transfer was around 10 seconds. Transfer switch was like firing both barrels of a 12 ga. "Ba-Bam."

My office has (6) 3.5mw mtu generators in parallel they are beasts and loud to run. I don't remember the model. But they do have 2 sets of oil and fuel filters and are designed to do oil and filter changes while they are running.
@324atleD
@324atleD Ай бұрын
Guarantee you that the 6 generators are in a N+1 configuration, meaning one or more is a spare in case of failure. The one that is the spare at the moment (not running), is the one having maintenance done.

Holy cow -- thats a lot of power -- pretty neat about the fuel filters and oil -- on these units they have 3 pre filters that can be services in operation for the fuel -- I dont think you can change the oil filters in that manner - I know it have a port connected oil systems -- you could change the oil around under operation -- but could not really do a full change including the filters -- -thanks for your comment

@324atleD no, its not N+1 It's in a distributed redundant power system also known as 4 to make 3. All the generators run at the same time. But yes it produces more power than needed.
@324atleD
@324atleD Ай бұрын
Understand you could utilize them either way but what is your primary goal, redundancy or load capacity?
@ParkerSystems
@ParkerSystems Ай бұрын
Both are applicable…. And with utility paralleling you can provide power continuously without interruption … helpful in industrial applications when processes suffer if power is lost even for a short time. Durring hurricanes we do capacity, during concerts, data center, redundancy is the goal. Thanks for watching

could these units be converted to run on CNG or jet A1?
@ParkerSystems
@ParkerSystems Ай бұрын
Assuming JET A1 is like JP-5 or JP-8 I am sure it would work -- I believe that the only difference between 5 and 8 are additives for different levels of temperatures to prevent gelling or issues at cold temps ... most jet fuels are basically diesel at more refined level (kerosene) with additives to prevent gelling, or ice crystals forming to making sure that fuel will flow at cold temps -- on natural gas, engine manufactures will adapte diesel engines to run on natural gas but require major changes, like the additions of spark plugs were injectors used to be and controllers to measure the gaseous fuel supply to the engine. So these units will operate on JET you would need a different version of this engine for natural gas -- also natural gas has about 80 percent of the energy in diesel so the units may be slightly derated.

I've had far fewer issues with the parallel cable vs the Ethernet. There is a reason why there are so many software versions...

watch their other video, they mention it in that one. Something like a 9,000 gallon tanker gives them 30-35 hours of run time.
