Great to see all the new growth! They are looking mighty good.

Thanks. I've lost quite a few of them since I started but I'm learning and hope to have more success next time.

@@gapey That's all part of the process! Still lots of successful ones too. :)

Some of them are coming along nice. Make sure your fertilizing when they began to leaf out to provide nutrients for root growth and foliage
@gapey4 жыл бұрын
Lots some more cuttings in the last week. Not sure what the problem is. Perhaps I wasn't watering them enough. Will increase watering and nutrients on my remaining figs and see if I can get them to pull through.

Thank you for your sharing and I have tried with wrapping fig cutting. 🙏🙏🙏

good. I hope it works well for you.

Went back to the garden this afternoon to close the tunnels ; a light frost wave could be expected in a few days. Am worried for the fruit trees that started to sprout their fruit buds already. And if they get frozen, it's done again to expect harvest this year. So I think I'll protect them under fleece before the risky period. I checked again the fig tree and I think I noticed one green fig bud appearing just beside a rameal bud ! It's located on the upper side of the biggest branch I wanted to prune... So I think this bud made it through this winter and Now I think I should protect it too tomorrow. About your fig-trees, did you try to place an up-side down plastic bag over the cutting to keep moisture and heat around them ; instead of parafilm ?
@gapey2 жыл бұрын
No but I think the parafilm helps keep the cutting from molding, especially on the top. I keep the cuttings in a tote that holds in a lot of moisture. I didn't use parafilm on my previous batch and had some mold grow on the tops of the cuttings.

@@gapey I used melted candle wax to seal the tips of my vine cuttings just by dipping them a 1/2 inch or so. The first one started to sprout 1 week ago (5 weeks after planting) ; the second one is just starting to sprout. Not sure the third will make it because the stem looked dry.
@gapey2 жыл бұрын
@@MrWookie21 Yup I've done that too and was going to but I didn't have enough wax so went with the parafilm.

I'm new to figs. What I find in my research is that root rot is most likely cause of loss of cuttings. I'm not being critical just trying to help everyone. Weight your container and cuttings once you get them all set up to give you a baseline w/ known moisture content. Well draining soil is best.
@gapey4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what my research showed too so I was really careful with how much and how often I watered.

Thanks for sharing your experience it is very helpful. I'm watching my cuttings and hoping they make it to spring.🙏

Looks like you use a heat mat. Is its heat output controlled by a thermostat as, without one, sometimes they get too hot and kill roots.
@gapey2 жыл бұрын
Yes most definitely! I always use a thermostat with my heat mats. :)

A co-worker will be giving me some cuttings, perhaps a stupid question, but is the goal to grow a tree, and how long does it take to produce figs?
@gapey4 жыл бұрын
I'm doing another fig update soon but yes eventually the cutting will turn into a tree. It typically takes 2-3 years for a cutting to produce fruit.

it depends on the temperature. In my country, I planted 5 fig cuttings last December. One has rotten, and only one fig has grown roots. Unlike you, I didn't warp those fig cuttings.
