Hi, I'm Pete. Northern Works is all about DIY furniture and home improvement projects that help us to consume less, and create more. I've got an ever-growing list of projects, and I'm excited to learn how to build things that I want to use, and that we'd love to see around our home.
If you value great design, but want to consume less of the fast furniture, then I'd love for you to join our community here on KZbin where we can learn together and share ideas.

Great job and great video. One challenge for me in DIY is not to expect the first try to be perfect. And as long as you can do it again several times there is no problem but if it is a one time job I find it hard not to go for the perfect result.😉

A think you did banging job there Pete. Know few plasters only other advice a can offer is if you do it again wet sponge between coats help smooth and skim it out. New winter gear is looking good. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

U got great vids but MDF on the fireplace is a bit like Styrofoam on the radiators 😅 When it comes to rendering, I mix render and water to make a "primer" prior to putting the render on. And always working a bit soggy.

Great job Pete. I'm not sure that the results would've been so good without the help of your apprentice 🖤

Always true, Iain. I could have got him mixing plaster this time, he’s got the energy for it!

I can't believe you didn't cover up the book shelf. Other than that, not bad for the first time. Plastering is very difficult.

I like you am no plasterer but I can do a whole wall not too bad......As has been said elsewhere....a watered down unibond on old or dry substrate helps avoid it sucking the moisture out...... always use a hawk and float and I would suggest a bucket of clean water.....one to keep your tools clean as you go and secondly with a 2 to 4 inch brush you can "splash" the wall as its drying out and run the float over to give a nice smooth finish....in my early days of plastering i tried to get that smooth finish instantly but you cant......stand back...have a quick cuppa and then....go back and splash and float...... like I said im no plasterer but i have found I get good results this way.......keep on it.....well done!

You're back to bare brick, you should have used hardwall 1st and then skimmed on top of that, you may find that plaster cracks over time. Try and put 2nd coat on top of a still fresh - just setting 1st coat. Good effort though, keep going, skills are learned over a lifetime, not in 5 mins 👌✌️

So true! I did use hard wall for the bare brick - I just lost the footage to a terrorist dog 😅. The tip about skimming over still wet plaster will be helpful in future, thanks.

@@northernworks ahhhh good lad! 👌 if you do need to go over already set plaster, use a diluted pva mix about 4:1 wait for it to go tacky and then apply your plaster, will give you a bit more playtime with the fresh plaster, if not the existing plaster will suck the new stuff dry suuuper quick. For future reference too, ideally you want to be skim coating the hardwall before it's fully cured too, preferably the same day, although not always possible. For the same reason that if it cures, it's just gona pull all the moisture from your skim.
So simple but it changed everything
