I used to work at what would be now considered a "small" datacenter in downtown Dallas. It ran at around 7MW average load from around 5000 servers. We had six similar generators plus a swing spare that could take over any one of the six. It sounded and smelled like a train yard when it ran. Opportunities to hear, smell and feel the beasts run were numerous. There were weekly tests, numerous storms, and for a time, we participated in "LaaRs" or Loads as a Resource. Basically, in a grid emergency, the utility would send us the LaaRs signal and we'd cut over to diesel power and disappear off of the grid to help prevent rolling blackouts.
@jeffhoogkamer23 күн бұрын
Interesting about the LaaRs - did the utility compensate you for going off the grid, or is that just part of being a larger customer?
@MadScientistsLair21 күн бұрын
@@jeffhoogkamer I was told we got a cheaper rate. I'm not sure why the facility stopped participating in the program. I suspect it was more down to corporate policy of our new owner than any technical reason. Technically speaking, any time we operate a transfer switch, we expose the loads to risk and this DC's new owner at the time was famously risk averse.

@@MadScientistsLair I worked at a ski resort in NW Maine that was pretty remote, so the newer lifts had full-power auxiliary diesels with a tertiary backup for actual evacuations (either a small aux engine, or a hydraulic hookup to run it off a snowcat). They had a variable rate with the power company, so to save money during peak days, they’d disconnect the electric drives and run the big diesels. Imagine going on vacation and waking up hungover in your condo to the sound of 3 tugboat engines going full-bore at 6am 😂

The flywheel is massive! Cool seeing it go full rich when load came on and then clean up after the turbos got going. Seems like you could improve the transient load efficiency of these units by switching to water-air intercoolers to reduce the charge piping volume, then electric turbo as the 2nd stage of a compound arrangement to e-boost fast load ramps. Would only need 100-200kw or so electric compressor to get the mass flow in 1/10th the time.

I think it can be a bit over 40 %. I tested a Jenbacher gas engine (that's gas as real gas, not gasoline) with 527 kW generator output and the overall efficiency fuel-->el. was 41 %. 1800 Rpm full power ??
@stanpatterson503319 күн бұрын
1800 rpm is rated full load speed, because the need to turn the generator at that constant speed to maintain the electrical load at proper frequency. These engines could probably handle a bit more speed, but my personal opinion is that 1800 is enough. If you can't get what you need from 1800 rpm engine speed, then get a different motor like an old 2-stroke Detroit Diesel that will happily spin faster, or get gearing to bring the rpm's to what you need. For longevity, 1800 rpms from these types of engines will yield great expectations.
