Man... Thanks soooo much for this video! Brought me back a few years. I grew up in North Bay and my buddy and I would go every weekend up hwy 63 towards tamiscaming. We would travel in from the highway on snow machine on old trapper lines until we couldn't go any further, get off the machine and head to a lake that looked good on the topographical map! Usually a good couple hours snow shoe with sleds in tow! We would build quinzee huts all the time! They were so warm. Usually the temps would be -40C with wind and inside the quinzee it would be about -2 to 0C! We always put pine boughs on the floor of the hut instead of a tarp. Some of the best camping is in the winter. You're right about the quietness. You walk down to the lake around midnight with a clean clear sky full of stars and stand there with eyes closed and just listen to nature. It's truly amazing. Thanks again. I really enjoy all your videos!

Pro Tip: Pile extra gear covered with a tarp in the center of there you want your quinzee. Cover with snow as shown. Let it set up and then dig into the centre and removed your gear. This saves time piling snow and it's a lot faster to hollow out.
@rgold2446 жыл бұрын
If you don't have enough extraneous gear, you can use logs as well. Just bury a pile of firewood in snow, wait for it to ice over, then dig the wood out. (Make sure you have other wood obviously so you can dry out your snowy logs afterward)

Pro tip: once you’ve built a couple quinsies you won’t need the sticks for wall thickness you can tell by the brightness of the walls. Even on a cloudy day the light will penetrate the walls on the upper half once your at a decent thickness. Been years since I built one but that’s how I always used to do it. Awesome trip you guys had in the snow! You’re channels have both grown so much over the past couple years. You guys are awesome!!

I literally just had the same thought. I've been watching Shawn since he's had right around 12,000 subs. Heck, I remember when hardly anyone even knew what bushcrafting was. Thanks for taking us along vicariously on a great winter woods adventure! At about 14, a Boy Scout friend of mine needed to earn a winter camping badge. I was the only one in our group to agree to go along. I wish we knew the tips you showed in this video. Mid-Winter in Western New York was c-o-l-d. I have always wanted a 'do-over' with decent equipment and better ideas. We could NOT get a fire started for 24 hours. His idea for winter water was to pull a milk can half full of water on a runner sled up the slope of a fairly steep drumlin (glacial rock-drop hill.) We didn't have snowshoes and we sunk in at every step just like you showed viewers. I thought HE would have all the right ideas: HE was the Scout! We started from a low baseline of achievement!

Amen to your point about the exertion and the time factor when building a quinzee. I had to just shake my head a few weeks back, when the so-called survival expert in a widely-read magazine wrote a blog about quinzees and made it sound like they're just the perfect little shelter to throw together, quick and easy, in a real life-or-death situation. I don't believe he'd ever really made one.
