I have this case with 3 computers inside. I 3D-printed an ITX motherboard mount to sit on top of the drive cage. All 3 are in the same water loop. Gaming/Plex/Hackintosh are the 3 systems. It looks great but takes a solid 20-30 hours any time I need to swap a component. I don’t regret doing it at all, it was a ton of fun and I love it, but it is indeed a terrible idea.

In the late 90s early 00s, when LAN parties were still a thing, having 2 PCs in one box meant you could have a separate computer that held all your MP3s^W Linux ISOs without impacting the performance of your gaming PC, and only have to lug one case around. I know of more than one person that hacked such a thing together, I don't know if there were any cases specifically made for it back then.

@@paulshardware I used to be on Staff for a LAN party and we had this couple always wheel in their dual systerm TT Tower 900 on a tool chest. It was a his and hers custom water cooled dual system, so they only needed 1 PC Case for both of them to play. Probably the best use case imo.

Edit: In terms of weight, if you're not using a massive water cooling loop it doesn't become unmanageable for most people.

I have a dual system pc. Number 1 reason is a space saving measure. I dont have the room to plop a second case around my desk and I wanted a second system. Speaking of, the reason I have a second system is for server hosting for games, I do want to make it also a little storage NAS but havent gotten around to it. Number 2 reason I did it was cause I thought it was cool, I just wanted to. I had old hardware lying around the I was kit bashing together into a server, and I found that the only major investment I needed, aside from the dual system chassis, was an itx board for the server. My pc is now freaking heavy and I haven't even water cooled it yet like I want to. But I do find it interesting and fun to use. If I ever have the space I'd love for an actual home rack server and then ill do away with my dual system, but for now it's a fun project.

I have the same case for my NAS. Fractal Design makes new trays for 8GB+ drives. Since I didn't want to wait, I wedged a piece of bike air chamber between the drives in each tray. It works perfectly.

I am gonna say this flat out. If you build with purpose and not form over function 2 systems 1 case can work phenomenally. My wife and I had a Mountain Mods UFO dual ATX build and it was fantastic never had any issues period. But you have to build with a little bit of forethought on cooling ,accessible maintenance ,and weight.

You could put it on a wood platform with wheels, i have mine on one and it make super easy to move it. It's way easier to move my main (1000d) PC and vacuum around it than my second system (old small mid tower prebuilt)

a friend of mine just built in this case, Fractal had to do a revision to the HDD brackets because of exactly the issue you ran into but you'd never know cause all their documentation still shows the old ones.

When I was a service tech and engineer in a data system there were several machines running dual or quad systems in the same case because limiting connections cables resulted in computers having no to less latency communicating between systems that needed to talk with each other on a constant basis for applications that ran and/or monitored industrial processes, a very unique situation. I personally have no need to do it. The longer the run of ethernet cables the more voltage drop and signal degradation where signal boosting machines/equipment would be needed. Again a very unique situation. And to say the least the machines in questions were next to or on top or under the multi PC case of the storage rack to shorten any and all connections. :)

Just adding a reason for dual PC cases. Reuse and restore. With many of us accumulating old PCs not in use, running igpus or non powered GPUs on them could make for some light weight processing and rather than dual booting different OS' you could just run the two systems at once networked together. (Windows 10 does not play nice with proprietary 2014 hardware). Putting them in the same case the size of a midtower or smaller would be awesome.

The real advantage of multiple PC's in one chassis comes in the server space with blade servers, where you can take out (and make redundant) the common things like fans, power supplies, etc, and have a bunch of compute blades in the chassis and everything is just slide in/slide out. I was lazy with my NAS, HP had one of their deals on HP MicroServers where old gens were down to 100 pound with rebate, so I have two of those. Low powered CPUs but fine for plex and four hotswap drive-sleds and nearly silent in a cute little cube.

Additional Reason: Very Close Network Ports. 10G SFP+ Network Card + Short Copper Direct Attach Cable is quite inexpensive as data center retired hardware. No switch required.

I’d do a dual system/single case set up for gaming and streaming. Sure, it’s a big case but it’s all about the convenience of having everything set up together. If I ever seriously consider doing it, I’ll build in the 1000D for sure.

I don't know myself, I don't do either, but I think Jays2Cents did a video and came up with modern hardware can do both at the same time as long as you're not trying to max out both, just set it for level 4 instead of 5 (my phrasing, not his) and there'll be enough resources for both...

I came across this video two years after it was published because I am considering a dual system and I'm doing a lot of research before I decide. You make a lot of good points and have given me a lot more to think about. My use case is quite different. I would never risk putting my storage backups in a situation like this. I am going to be using the main system for a daily driver and gaming. The smaller, secondary system will be for streaming, recording, and for my neice and nephew when they come over. They can both play on my computer without fighting over it because it's really two computers. They can sit side by side and chase each other around in Rocket League, Roblox, and Fortnight. I don't have a lot of space for two computer but this case takes up about the same volume as two cases. The footprint is smaller than having two mid towers but it is way taller and deeper. I really didn't think about one system taking down both of them. That is a huge disadvantage. I'm glad I saw this video before buying a dual case and thanks for putting it out there. I never would have thought of a lot of this stuff until it was too late. Cost is another big one. This "super" tower is over $500 and I can get two midtowers for half that price. So the case is four times as expensive as just buying two separate cases. Buuuut... I really like the idea of it and it would save me a bunch of space in my little room. Also, I still play MMOs and I do enjoy two-boxing. I can two-box with separate machines but this would be ... ...decisions, decisions. Thanks again for pointing out the cons. This video might have saved me a bunch of money and headache.

freenas/zfs doesn't require you to plug drives back in to the same ports. zfs uses the drive's uuid to register it to the pool which is pretty fantastic if you transplant drives from one server to another.

im going to comment before watching the video: i have a corsair 900D case that i custom built. the CASE. it holds 2 FULL ATX boards, 2 FULL ATX-size PSUs, 2 big GPUs, big stack coolers, extra fans. and it works amazingly well. one rig runs my sim racing setup, and the other rig is for general gaming and adobe work. i did it this way to save space on 2 systems that i was needing anyway

I used to have a dual monitor set up, but there's a glitch when drawing on the particulat graphics tablet I like that caused it to ocassionally jump monitors and screw up the stroke. So naturally I did the obvious thing and built a dual pc set up so I can still watch KZbin while I draw. Great idea. Another reason to have a dual pc is I only have one water cooling loop.

my brother had a Xeon + K6000 workstation and a 4770k 780ti in his cooler master cosmos ii some years back, it was glorious, he's built tall and heavy so moving it around wasn't much of problem, we maintained it well so we had no problems if at all with her and it was air cooled [as were the times], upgraded it in 2012 then finally in 2014 [k6000 to m6000 i don't remember if it was the other way round] but this is also true, we sold it because we got fed up with the weight and generally lugging it around, great thing is it retained much of its value tho.

Another use for doing 2 PCs in the same case that I can think of is for those that want a Dual PC stream setup, where one is dedicated to the gaming and the other dedicated to the streaming where the PC's won't have items outside of the build dependent on it. This would also fit a case where they wouldn't need to have their own power supply. Even dual PC streaming setups have their complexities and quirkiness that some tend to shy away from doing that. I agree that doing a PC and NAS in the same case wouldn't be a good use case for that.

Yep, that was my plan with my currently unfinished and now pretty outdated Phanteks 2 in 1 case. I didn't have the energy to do streaming and I was trying to get 2 of my older separate PCs into one. It actually works, I just never got around to properly finishing cable managing and securing everything into place.

With modern hardware you don't need a dual PC setup anymore. A 5900 with a 3080 (if you could find one) should be able to take care of both gaming and streaming. You also save money by not needing a capture card. I know there are ways around the capture card but I think the quality is not as good as having one. The main quirk with a dual PC setup is the ability to talk to your team if multiplayer gaming and being able to talk to your chat. The gaming mic needs to be on the gaming PC and the chat mic needs to be on the streaming PC. Some streamers just use two mics.

Node 304 is a pretty old case these days but it's still one of the best for a self build NAS. Not super easy if you need to swap out a bad drive, but not too bad either as Paul showed, the drives are reasonably accessible. I have a 4 drive TrueNAS build in the black version and it's great, although my drives are only 4TB ones so they fit okay in the caddies.

I have a dual system in a Phanteks P600S and a revolt X 1200 watt PSU. There are ups and downs. for me its space saving, and the fact I don't have to tab out of a game when talking on discord. I built mine recently though and definitely one of the main reasons you stated at the beginning of the video is true. I wanted all the power as it was always my dream as a kid to have an awesome gaming PC. Now I can't upgrade my system any further (besides ram). So I bought the bracket for phanteks cases and then upgraded PSU and added a smaller ITX board mainly used for office work or discord calls etc. Works well and I can set the mini system up to video capture my older game consoles if I want to record them when I play.

I used the Phanteks PSU and Evolve X to put NAS and watercooled gaming system into one case. It sucked! The PSU does keep the power on for the PCIe and auxiliary power cables and will run your RGB on the gaming system and kick your fans on the gaming systems GPU to high gear, because it does not get power form the mainboard, but from the PCIe cables. I solved it with changing that to a waterblock, but the system would still get power. It only works if both systems have to run at the same time. I completely agree with your decision, Paul.

I found myself in a similar situation when I built a chenbro NR12000 (after watching craft computing) I tried to populate it with a couple seagate exos drives, well they don't use the same mounting (they use the extended spacing, the server chassis used the middle mounting). So I had to (and still have to) take out the drive mounting brackets that are riveted and screwed in and drill out new mounting holes for one of the sets of mounting screws. (I did 1 tray, have 2 more to do)

Just last weekend I took my rig apart (a Meshify S2) for the same reason. For the case, which is black, I used wet wipes to clean it out and they work very well on the rubber gromets - the build looks brand new if you give a good enough wipe down.

Yea, I have dual case build using 1000D and it’s not for everyone. Fortunately my use case supports this config but over the years of the build and reading normal users post during that time it definitely would not be practical for many. I’m a developer, programmer, cyber defender, normal daily driver, and all the soho requirements needed in my case. I have two boards, one intel and the other thread ripper, two psu, and a bunch of cables. Last year I was going to water cool but then all the supply scalping happened which turned me off in buying. I game only a little but wouldn’t mind a change since I’m older and have all my college and gathering work experience - which takes dedication in your job instead of gaming all day - so gaming sounds fun since it’s hard to do anything outside the city due to Karen’s and covid restrictions. Love your videos and think your configurations are very sound. Cheers

That FreeNAS relocation makes me want to relocate my server from my mid-tower case (Cooler Master CM 690 ii) into an itx case like that so, following your other video's advice, I can finally get it off the floor haha. I have a 1000D and had the same setup with the NAS on the ITX board below. I also ran a custom loop on the main system. It was very nerve-wracking with the drives below all of the watercooling hardware. I did the same and removed the NAS system into a Cerberus X (love the handle). I've had better sleep since.

I ran into the same drive mounting issue when I recently built my little NAS in the CoolerMaster Elite 130. After some investigation, I learned that several years ago they (whoever "they" is) pushed the spacing out for higher capacity drives (e.g. your 8TB drives and my 10TB drives - I only have 2 of them, though). Since the mounting points in the CM 130 could also double for SSDs, I was able to kind of kludge my way through it, but it was irritating. I even emailed CoolerMaster to see if they made different brackets, but got no response. P.S. I would definitely not recommend the Elite 130 for this purpose... or at all, I think... the power supply hanging over the cpu really limits what you can do for cooling where, even if it fits, a good portion of the intake is blocked. Definitely should have used the 304 you showed here :)

I think fractal design has updated it's Node 304 design to accommodate the new hard drive screw locations. You should be able to contact their support and get new ones.

There should be no need to keep the same drive on the same port regardless of what type of RAID or system you are using but labeling the cables by port number will help you identify a faulty drive quickly.

Was thinking of dismantling my series x and installing it in my current case with my pc. Setting up the extra rgb/light mode button as to make a on/off switch for the xbox. I would have to reroute some things and add a few fans just to increase airflow in the case to compensate for the 2 systems. The amount of airflow that is needed for the xbox really isnt that much. Only reason is for all of this is as you stated, space. The simple fact is that I have limited space for both systems in my current set up. My wife has only allocated me so much room and I feel a bit cluttered as is. I would be voiding warranties and all that but it seems like a fun little project that might work flawlessly or be an absolute disaster. More to think about i guess

I think dual systems was a really cool idea that no one found an actual use for. It could be useful if you needed two low end systems, like a NAS and a Streaming/External capture PC or a file sever and a tor node, stuff you'd leave on 24/7 and rarely touch. You'd potentially save a lot of money and space doing a dual system for that kind of thing, without pushing the cooling capacity to it's limits, but for 99% of people it just seems like something you want to do for fun, rather than makes practical sense

A company I worked for did build a dual-system unit for a RIP and digital proofing system. The main PC ran the RIP software and that was sent via the second NIC-port to the secondary PC which ran the output software for the imaging unit. The main PC ran Windows NT server at the time, and the output device ran Solaris and proprietary software for the imager. As far as doing this for a personal system, I'm not sure of the usefulness outside of dual purposes such as a NAS-box and PC all in one unit.

In terms of dual PCs, I think it depends. That case might be bad for it with both systems intermingled with one another. But, if memory serves me right, I've seen cases where the smaller system gets its own little separated attic compartment.

Back in the late 2000s my uncle built a x4 pc he named "The LAN Cube" I was only 8 or 9 while it was in use, but me and my cousins could play games like Call of Duty 4 or Left 4 Dead sitting around a cards table basically. It was kind of epic. I really wish I knew the specs.

I had the same HDD mounting issue when I got some 8TB hard drives (HGST Deskstar NAS) a few years ago. Had a Rosewill Thor V2 case - it only had the closer-spaced screw mounts, not the wider ones. (Some of my older HDDs, for example I think some 5TB and maybe 4TB drives, had screw holes for all 3 screw positions.) I ended up getting another case entirely - the Fractal Design Define R5, which solved that issue. (It still didn't solve the issue of running out of drive bays, though... sometimes I've wanted to plug like 20 or 30 drives into the same system, and I don't really want, nor have a place to put, a rackmount case.)

Silverstone DS380 is a great little NAS case. 8 hot swappable trayless 3.5" so you don't have to worry about hole pattern plus 4 fixed 2.5". Would mean jumping to SFX(L) for the PSU, but very worth it.

Both sets of mounting holes are part of the same standard (SFF-8301), and have been for quite a while (at least dating back to 2010, from what I've found, but I'm fairly confident they go back way further than that) though almost every drive I've seen has either the ones your Toshiba has, or both. I checked through my pile of drives, some of which are positively ancient IDE drives and I couldn't find any that have only the hole pattern your WD Red has, I did however find an ancient Fujitsu IDE HDD that looks like it has all six holes Are the Reds shucked perchance? I seem to recall reading those sometimes have a less common hole pattern, because...reasons... I guess...

I have two systems in one case. Phanteks enthoo pro 2 is the case I used. Small itx build which I use for streaming, and for game server hosting. Then my main rig full size atx which is water cooled. Only space I have in my computer room would be on the floor for another pc, and I hate putting pcs on the floor dust magnets. Ironically was actually cheaper for me to do this as I didn't have to buy another case, more fans, and another power supply. Just bought the power splitter from Phanteks.

This is why you need a 3D Printer Paul... I've printed adapters or cases for drives as needed. VERY VERY Handy.

With all the mainstream high core CPUs and dearth of reasonably-priced GPUs these days, it makes more sense from a hardware perspective to build one system and split it up using virtual machines.

Livestreamers with a dualPC setup love those setups, 2 PCs in one case. Shorter cable management, easier workflow, space savings and everything else. Of course there are drawbacks, but it is worth doing it.

Fractal had the wide mount drive trays for my R4 case. They may be able to help with your disk caddy. Typical Fractal - didn't charge me for 2 spare trays for a seven year old case.

Me with multi system in a server rack and dedicated airflow. Yeah multi system is great, you can exhaust heat and manage airflow efficiently. In your room, you can control where you want something hot and where you keep things cool.

I think Thermaltake w200 has one the best dual system cases, but it is a very large case. It keeps both systems separated making working on each one easier without having to tear the system apart.

those drives needed to be rotated, the screw holes are standard. those grommets mount to drive SIDE holes then slide in chassis slots.

For future reference if you are worried about the hard drives being taped in. You could get a small piece of l channel/bracket and mount it to those and line it up to the oldschool holes with the l bracket then use a flat washer and a nut for a good sandwhich fit. Bam Given that you have clear and switch it shouldn't be an issue

Hi Paul, I took a break from computers during the shortage, with the GPU burnout and other shortages. Just made it around to see what your up to. The reason I'd get a case that big would be radiator overkill, I own a Phanteks Enthoo Luxe, and it was a good idea for a bunch or drives and a radiator. Although there are things about the case I don't like, it's fine for what I need. Anyways, thanks for the content.

Eh i still love the 1000d and intend to build a dual system in it, the reason why is the 1000d has the capability to and id much rather use it to the fullest extent. plus failures arent a major problem since ill be having the pc in the room and more regularly cleaning it. Finally ill divide the cables as best i can since the 1000d has the room to the only problem is the fans but its not much of a problem. Overall i think 2 systems in one case certainly can work in a different scenario then pauls. overall a great video though! I'd love to see a new build in your old 1000d

The extra weight came from the water cooling loop as did most of your issues with your dual system setup. I think more practical dual system could be built in something like a Metallic Gear Neo Qube with one midrange to high system and one humble ITX setup with integrated graphics. Triple monitors + kvm+ Mouse Without Borders software KVM. Should be stutter free gaming on one, while you do whatever you want on the other. Please make a video of this build.

Build my Unraid server on a Node 304 earlier this year. Aside from cable management problems, especially once you have 4 to 5 disks, it is a good case for a NAS.

As a two pc one case owner ( 1000d case to be exact ), I concur on these issues. One the pc is super heavy, forunately I have the pc rested on my music rack that have casters so its alot easier to move around. Second, my itx motherboard have failed on me three for the year and a half I've had this case. Troubleshooting became a huge pain because I had to driain the loop that was connected to the itx board everything time I had to troubleshoot. I enjoy the looked of my build but if I have one more psu cable, motherboard or gpu failure I will split them up in two separate cases.

Makes sense if you’re a streamer and want to have one system for the gaming and the other for OBS but only have space for one system.
