It's a hard job, that's for sure. They make it look easy, just staring at computer screens, but there's a lot more to it than that. I'm shocked the burnout rates aren't higher when I hear how meticulous and attentive they have to be at the job. When the Swissair disaster occurred here in Nova Scotia back in the 90s, everybody wondered what it was like for the people guiding the plane from the ground. I can only imagine how stressful that would have been.

For those who didn't listen to the full ATC, AA106 was told to "cross 31L at kilo." Kilo is the white lane that is running parallel to the left of runway 4L. AA106 was supposed to tax down kilo to line up to take off on runway 4L. In other words, as Delta 1943 is moving up and right on 4L to take off, AA106 should have been moving down and left on kilo, parallel to DAL1943. "Cross 31L" was ATC's notification to AA106 that there was no traffic on 31L and that it was safe for AA106 to cross over 31L on kilo. Instead of following ATC, AA106 taxi'd along juliet (the lane you see AA106 on in the diagram) and taxi'd across 4L while the lane was active with DAL1943 taking off. ATC called pilot deviation on AA106 and had the pilot telephone the tower, which only happens when things go very, very sideways. Pretty sure the DAL1943 crew had to change their boxers after that.

The American Airlines (AA106) missed the taxiway to runway 4L to be next to takeoff after Delta Airlines (DL1943)and was headed to runway 31L, the wrong runway. The American Airlines pilot and copilot should have known what the active takeoff runway was.

What is Runway Status Lights (RWSL)? RWSL is comprised of red in-pavement airport lights which signal a potentially unsafe situation on taxiways and runways. The system is automated based on inputs from surface and terminal surveillance systems. The system is comprised of two areas: Runway Entrance Lights provide a warning signal to aircraft crossing or entering a runway from intersecting taxiways; Takeoff Hold Lights provide a warning signal to aircraft in position for takeoff.

Many air disasters could be avoided if aviation authorities considered flying aircraft further apart when taken off and in the air heading in a direction knowing they are on the road to remain in flight and not climb to find jet streams to speed up to arrive early and face waiting to dock or waiting to stack their plane to save fuel.

Does 9/11 not count as the worst aviation disaster in the United States?
@JarethTheGoblinKingForever
@JarethTheGoblinKingForever Жыл бұрын
Not really. That was a deliberate terrorist attack with most of the casualties on the ground (very high up, but still on the ground, technically). The planes then were used as a weapon, not the site of death, except for United 93. 9/11 was a horrific loss of life and a terrible thing, but I can see why it's not called an "aviation disaster". It would be like calling Pearl Harbour or Hiroshima "aviation disasters" just because planes were heavily involved. Strangely though, speaking of NYC's plane disasters, a plane did crash in a suburban neighbourhood of NYC in November 2001, only a mere 2 months after 9/11, which scared the pants off everybody, considering the time period. It is the 2nd-deadliest aviation incident in US history, as far as I know.

Jfk u guys . In my experiences, USA pilots and especially air traffic controllers have a terrible level of ATC language skill. They say just English not ATC and it causes many unclear situations. And controllers doesn't monitor whole situation of airport well. They just blame pilots. I don't know and I can't understand why they don't put any efforts on that to improve these kind of problem. FAA is also problem. Do not blame and look down on other country pilot who speaks English not better than u guys. Always big problem come from USA controller or pilot.

So the pilots can't see in front of them very well, when they're on the ground? How could you not see a plane in front of you at least a half mile out and slow down.
@trilight3597
@trilight3597 Жыл бұрын
Planes are not to cross a runway without prior clearance. DAL has clearance to takeoff, so even if the plane was coming which some do, there is a HOLD line, that they should not pass without prior clearance from the GROUND ATC. So during normal circumstances, AAL plane would have stopped. The pilots on AAL is at fault because they weren't supposed to be there in the first place. AAL missed their turn on their route and went to the wrong runway. They were given permission to cross a different runway. And takeoff you're going to more than 100 mph, it'll take quite a bit to stop regardless of how hard you brake. TLDR; American Airline Pilots (AAL) was in the wrong. They took the wrong route, which put them in front of Delta Airlines (DAL) which had permission to take off.
@warriorfb2010
@warriorfb2010 Жыл бұрын
They need about a mile of visibility, but it's not always perfect and can change in seconds. When they get takeoff clearance from ATC, they can pretty much (usually) trust that the runway is clear.
