On January 3, 2000, Bill Belichick became head coach of the New York Jets, but promptly stepped down and took the same position with the New England Patriots. Mike Greenberg, Wayne Chrebet and others recall the shocking event with utter disgust.

While I can't prove it, I'd like to think eventually Tom would have hit the field no matter what. The talent and work ethic was already there, I think it was just a matter of time before he out played Bledsoe.

Juan, on the special NFL Films video for that Superbowl Belichick said (way back then) they were already thinking about going with Brady but they went with Bledsoe just because of experience. He knew what he had at that point. I believe any coach would have. Someone that wants to get better THAT much is sure to be noticed.

The story of BB leaving the NYJ had a few more twists than the media reported. Parcells got BB a job working under him with the patriots in 96, and then talked him into going to NY with him after the SB loss to Green Bay. BB liked Robert Kraft, the organization and the area, and he didn't want to leave in the first place. So when BB felt like he was stuffed into the HC job after Parcells "retired" BB instead resigned, and he was even willing to sit out a year to be able to negotiate a contract with the patriots.

Why did Belichick leave the Jets? Because the Jets ownership reneged on their promise to give him control of scouting and player selection. They gave Parcells the GM position and empowered him with those decisions. Belichick wanted to be out from under Parcells' shadow. Belichick made Parcells a better coach by building great defenses, at New England and then in the Meadowlands.

But most do forget that the Patriots were a huge laughingstock for so many years, and that it was actually Bill Parcells, who put them on the map, and made them respectable, save for when they somehow managed to make the Super Bowl in 1985. That and had to endure a failed coaching hire in Pete Carroll, who was actually a fine coach himself, who did eventually win the Super Bowl too. Bummer for the Jets that they fired him with not knowing what they had back then, only to replace him with, and bring in the clueless Rich Kotite, who made Ray Handley look like Vince Lombardi! Diehard Pats fan from Mass. Some of my closest friends from my Submarine are New Yorker's and JETS Fans. But, ill put homerism aside. I feel bad for the JETS FANS but it was a shit situation. Having the priviledge to see my football team become a dynasty is awesome but look what Parcells did. 1) He was negotiating with the Jets the week of our super bowl game against green bay. Apparently, it started during the 96 draft when Parcells wanted a DB, and Mr Kraft overruled him and took Terry Glenn from THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY :). 2) Belichick , like he has in Foxborough, has GM DUTIES. It has been his kryptonite every so often. How that relates to Parcells is after Belichick was named head coach, Parcells told Bill, i will still be GM. Belichick wanted to be his own Head coach/GM. I also believe Woody Johnson being named owner after Mr Hess passed away didnt help. Woody seems like a complete asshat. As evident but his love of Rex Ryan. I also belive if Belichick is head coach, Pennington doesnt get drafted. He trades down and stockpiles chips. Good luck jets! See you in a few months!

The only problem with this is that at the time, Belichick was viewed as a failure as Head Coach in Cleveland. I would think that at the time, the bigger loss was losing Bill Parcells as "HC of the NYJ". I'm from New England, and many of the "experts" in the media were very skeptical of the hiring of Bill Belichick, and many would have preferred getting then St. Louis Rams (who had just won the Super Bowl) OC Mike Martz in New England, before Martz was hired to replace the retiring Dick Vermeil, the HC of those Rams. The issue for Belichick wasn't the Jets, per se. It was the fact that the owner, Leon Hess, had died, and the team was for sale. Belichick had been burned by Cleveland owner Art Modell, and he wasn't about to get into another job where there was uncertainty regarding ownership. Bear in mind that Parcells and HC Al Groh were gone after the 2000 season. Coaches rarely get a third chance in the NFL. Belichick wasn't going to take that chance. And there was no way of knowing what Belichick was about to accomplish in New England. The doubts (among the media and many fans) about Belichick only grew after his first season, when the Patriots went 5-11. But he had stable ownership, and a good relationship with that owner (originally the two got to know one another in 1996, when Belichick was an assistant under Parcells in New England). Hindsight is 20/20, but it was far from clear at the time. As for Brady, even Belichick admits that if he knew what he was going to get with Brady, he would not have waited until the 6th Round to draft him.
@tysen813
@tysen813 2 жыл бұрын
Regarding Brady, I don't think any team knew what they would get with Tom Brady- hence why everyone passed on him until the 6th Round. Had Michigan not have a two-quarterback system that split up Brady's time, he would have more game tape for teams to make a better decision on. Easily a 2nd rounder, at the very worst. Kudos for Dick Rehbein of convicing BB to draft Brady, making him quite possibly the only NFL coach to have an idea of Tom Brady's potential.

That's interesting, because Greenie and the others talked about Jan 4, 2000 as if it was a lock from that day forward that the Patriots would become the force that they did become. Boston sports talk radio gurus were decidedly unfavorable about the Belichick hire based upon his Cleveland record a few years earlier. Marty Schottenheimer was preferred by some of the "experts." People can mock this decision but it made perfect sense. The team didn't have an owner at the time - everyone knows a new owner will bring in his own GM, and the new GM will want to bring in his own coach. Belichick had already washed out as a HC in Cleveland; he knew if it didn't work out for him here he would never be an NFL head coach. A year later, Parcells was gone and Al Groh left for UVA because Parcells leaving gave him no safety net. If Belichick had stayed there, and the team had gone 9-7 and missed the playoffs (which is what happened), then Parcells left, new ownership would probably have canned Belichick (based on his Cleveland years they would have just thought he wasn't a good HC) and brought in Herm Edwards anyway. And Belichick would be confined to being a defensive coordinator the rest of his career. The decision to not take the Jets' job was a no-brainer.

1:04 hey I don't acknowledge that Belichick "accepted" the job as the HC on January 3. All they had at the time was a previous agreement that was sealed between him, Parcells and the then late Hess - the previous team owner. As Bill Parcels had resigned from the position on January 3, it was a general understanding that Belichick would be the new HC. But Belichick already had disagreements with both potential new owners at that point in time, and only got the chance to speak for himself the very next day. So, in a sense, that's different from saying that he accepted a job and resigned the very next day out of nowhere.. he was already uncomfortable.

Jets fans.....blame your owner. Everyone knows the reason BB left was because he wanted complete control over decision making and ownership wouldn't do it. New England on the other hand said "yes" to this and needless to say.....the rest is historical. That's why I laugh at how Jets fans hate BB for leaving their crummy organization. Don't hate him.....hate the owners for not giving him the keys to run a franchise as he sees fit. BB wanted the final say over personal decisions but Jets ownership wouldn't agree. So he flipped them the bird and said see Ya later. You can't blame him for that. However, as a Patriots fan, I want to thank you very much for your decision , which I know will go down in history as the greatest ever here in New England, 5 Super Bowl titles later, all I can say is Thank You ,Thank You, Thank You to the New York Jets for the "best dumbest " decision ever made in sports history .

Jet's new ownership was to blame. I have a feeling, based on Belichick's comments, they weren't letting him run the team the way he saw fit. He learned from his mistakes during his tenure with the Browns.

I guess it's no fluke that both the Jets and Browns have been struggling to win anything of significance since Belichick left both franchises. That being said, the Browns look like they might (finally) turn the corner in 2019!

People act like the Jets would of won all those superbowls if they just had Bill Belichick. This is utterly presumptions. People forget Bill Belichick coached the Browns and had terrible seasons. Bill Belichick could have easily repeated losing seasons with the Jets. Brady is a product of a system. Patriots went 11 and 5 without Brady. Besides NO ONE new what Brady would turn out to be. He was not that great at the football combine. If Bill Belichick would have stayed in NY instead of going to the Patriots, I don't think he wins any superbowls.

Don't feel bad because Belichick didn't remain HC. 80% of the Patriots success was due to Tom Brady being QB. Belichick just got lucky.

best decision Bill Belichick ever made another smart move was snagging Roman Phifer in 2001 to the Patriots from the Jets
@MoniqueFromPlymouth
@MoniqueFromPlymouth 8 жыл бұрын
+Jose Lopez It was more than just Phifer. Numerous Jets players went to the Patriots over the next several years and some of them won Super Bowl rings. Belichick also took most of the Jets scouting department (one of them was Scott Pioli) to New England.

to imagine.....if Bill had stayed in NY he most likely would of drafted Tom Brady as well. I can't make myself believe it wouldn't be the same success story with Bill making all the roster moves. Just a different town and a different color jersey. and it does feel as if Bill will be leaving the patriots sooner then later and then he'll be the hottest free agent and then I think he is gonna go to wherever he wants because when you honestly think about it he could out nearly any coach from their job. He is just that good.

there's not a day that goes by that I don't feel bad for the Jets. while they have won a few play off games, the patriots have won 4 Superbowls and have ruled the east for over 15 years. I also don't believe for second that cheating makes you that awesome. sure, there might be a slight edge, but every time they get caught, they come out and win, win, win !!that's not cheating, that's fucken greatness right there.

Exactly. And it's not like the Patriots were tripping players from the sidelines during games, or trying to switch out kicking balls with unapproved balls, or intentionally deflating balls like Jeff Blake was doing in the 90's, or any other shady shit like the Jets were doing. They filmed signals from the sidelines instead of the stands (made illegal just a year prior), which didn't even affect the outcome of a game.

All the Patriots haters have been waiting for years and saying they cant wait until Brady is gone so the Patriots can suck again. Well guess what everybody, by the time Tom retires around 2019, Jimmy G will step in to take his place. Anyone see how great Jimmy has looked in his limited action. The present and future remains bright for New England. Sorry Folks but Belichick and co are not going anywhere for a long time. Prediction.......Bill Belichick will have won 7 rings as HC of the Pats by the time he retires.

As the 2000 season was playing out there should have been no Jets fans clamoring for Belichick as the Pats were an awful 5-11, and he made news for paying a player to start a fight in practice. It looked like he was going to be a losing coach, just as he was in Cleveland. We didn’t remember how Belichick was turning the Browns around before the move to Baltimore made headline news and the team unraveled. His six-year record after the 2000 season was pretty awful. Two games into the 2001 season the Pats were 0-2 and there may have been whispers that he was going to get fired. Bledsoe is now gone and it looks like the team might end up with the worst record in the NFL. My how things changes once Brady became the starter. Makes you wonder if there are other genius coaches out there who just don’t have the quarterback to make it all come together.
