I just came across this. I am a recruiter for a nationwide corporation, and got hired with absolutely no experience. These specific tactics are EXACTLY what I did to get the position, and I am told regularly how glad they are that they went with their gut because I am not afraid to address things that others don’t feel comfortable addressing, and I have even changed the way we approach our hiring process. The best Answer I’ve found to “do you have any questions for us?” Is: “Yes, tell me what your current primary area of concern is, and, if selected for the position, what I can do to help with the resolution.” That question alone had 2 different departments of the same company fighting over hiring me because they both extended an offer the same day!

I TRIED IT TWICE! I’m interviewing in law so immediately after watching this I’m like, no way, won’t work. But after the last few blah interviews (one was with a 20-something “assistant director of operations” that kept looking at her PHONE), I thought what the hell. YOU GUYS.... it worked 😂. The first interviewer was also very very young and seemed caught off guard but answered me thoughtfully. She added that she personally appreciated the question but other employers might find it too forward. So of course I tried it again and this time was interviewing with the managing partner. He laughed, called me out for the sales technique, but also scheduled me for an in person interview this week. So there you have it.

Well I am delighted both for me and for you A. Wimmer! Coming from a family of lawyers and one federal judge, I know how condescending some lawyers can be--NOT ALL OF THEM, TOM, IN CASE YOU'RE READING THIS. If you scored with this technique while interviewing for a position in law, it tells others to GO FOR IT. I've personally used it (in my young young life) and like you, can attest to its effectiveness. You just have to muster up the courage to do it!

Usually I am asked at the end of the interview, "Is there any reason you might have for not accepting this position." Usually the conversation is something like, "Everything looks great to me and I just need to know that we are on the same page before I take this to the V.P. for approval." Oddly, I have often hesitated on this because I do not want to come across like "yes, yes, yes, and I'll accept anything you want to pay me!" I usually say "We have not discussed money yet, and of course that factors into my decision; however, everything else looks great to me too. I love the company, have really enjoyed meeting the people here, and I think we would be a great fit and really work well together. I would love to move forward on this, once we hammer out the details.
@TheWizardOfWords3 жыл бұрын
Excellent answer, Datamaiden. With the exchange you just outlined, I would think you'd have that job--or maybe the money wasn't there?? Also, I believe it is totally appropriate at that point to say how delighted you would be with the position, and then ask what the remuneration is, or will be based upon. You certainly can't be expected to be too delighted until you have an idea of compensation.

I feel like the positive tone is especially crucial in the beginning of: "yes, tell me, what concerns might you have or reasons why you might not give me this job?" - it could easily go south with someone frustrated with many failed job interviews: "YES....TELL ME (buddy)... what concerns might you.." lol. Tread with a confident attitude/tone for sure.

Yes, agree'd. A lot of job candidates that keep missing offers/return calls should record their interview and assess their own tone and words. We are our greatest (not worst...greatest) critic. We must learn ourselves as much as possible.

I agree that honest self-evaluation is a critical tool for learning and advancement. Recently I received pretty harsh criticism from a trusted friend. My first thought was to be defensive. On reflection, I saw that she was right, and pushing me to be a better person. Thank God I didn't react to my first thought. That sliver in time between event and reaction is SO important. (Pardon the slight digression, Ooo :)
@marianl34473 жыл бұрын
This is so true ..the tone of voice and energy in your state of mind will make it work or make it bomb. so it's not just the words but the genuineness with which you ask that question...(so people who have qualms about it may be because it is not something they can feel genuine about and should probably look at that and NOT DO it UNLESS they can changee that. If someone is not too proud to admit there MAY be reasons they are not right for the job and want to know that , so you get to deal with them up front and not walk away wishing you had , that can be a plus in your favor too.. You are risking you might have to admit something is beyond you but it may give you an opportunity to show how something is what you are good at that they may have thought otherwise and didn't bring it up . then if instead it's something you can't do but admit to that , you can show genuine interest in learning it and discuss that. That honesty and willingness to learn may tie it up for you but if not it will show you that it would not have worked then and you can cross it off the list as Dan said.

I asked the first time what I could do beyond the job description, and that helped, I believe. I'm definitely going to use "What do I need to do to get this job?" And if I don't have an offer by the end, then I can't wait to ask "Tell me, what concerns might you have or reasons why you might not give me this position?" It's been so helpful that I have my EA License to stand before the IRS. But a lot of the places want me to already have my Bachelor's in Accounting, and that's not quite done yet. I left the first interview with them knowing that this is the place I need to be.

I am using both phrases in my next interview. I have had a number of interviews but never got a callback. I assumed probably incorrectly that it was due to age. I am an older white male trying to get back into the Cybersecurity field. I have years and years of experience, in fact, in one interview I had more experience than all 3 interviewers in the room combined. When I asked (after the fact) why I didn't get the job, the response was utterly ridiculous and showed just how little he understood about the area he was leading as we discussed it in the interview and he knew that it was an area that I was strong in, yet he told the recruiter that he wanted more experience there. I was blown away by that response. After hearing this, I wasn't sure this was a good place for me to get hired. I have left interviews feeling like I had just knocked it out of the park, only to not hear back.

I'm an RN who's looking to make a parallel move to a new hospital due to too much tension amongst staff on my current unit. My present hospital is closest to my house and I love the patient population served by my unit but, all this negativity is too much! It doesn't help that my manager is the source of all things bad and evil. So, I'm ready to leave this job after only 8 months. Coming up with an appropriate answer to the inevitable interview question of "why are you leaving the best hospital in town to work here" is really causing me a lot of grief.
@TheWizardOfWords4 жыл бұрын
Susan, I would answer that question honestly but without a negative word about your present employer. Something like this: "After awhile I came to see that my personality type wasn't a good fit. It's really as simple as that. I have nothing bad to say about the hospital, my experiences, or my co-workers. It simply wasn't a good fit for me." They will KNOW you had some negative experiences, but you don't want to talk about them because it is NOT SMART to do that in an interview. :)

I would hesitate to use the first question as uk etiquette is slightly different. Their recruitment process is usually to sit after the interviews and discuss and compare applicants. They tend to keep their cards quite close to the chest. Companies can vary though. I usually attend interview slots right after lunch so they aren't distracted by hunger and have energy so not fatigued by end of day. I would be interested in questions to also vet the potential line manager to know if they are healthy. Thank you for everything you do. You're great!

Hi Dan thanks for telling it how it is. My experience of asking this ending question is consistently negative - in that they always seem to a) not answer honestly to me about why I wouldn’t be put forward or b ) they strangely seem to give very unclear, vague answers - that don’t really seem to tell me clearly… my experience is that people seem to not want to tell me. Should I just give up asking them - I wonder what I need to change.

I wouldn’t ask “what can I do to get this job” because I don’t want to seem like I think I am above their hiring process and I’m entitled to bypass what processes they have in place. I am going to follow up with the concerns bit! My mom told me to use the excuse of trying to make a better connection by following up via email to compensate for the fact that the interview was via video chat.
@TheWizardOfWords3 жыл бұрын
Mothers are always right; I'd never argue with them. Perhaps, however, you could ask the closing question AND follow up via email? Asking what you must/can do to get the job is not suggesting you want to bypass the hiring process. I'm not sure where you'd get that impression. You're simply asking what requirements might be missing that you could fulfill-- so if you don't have a certain certification, e.g., and that cert is necessary for the job, hopefully at this point the interviewer will tell you "One thing you'll have to do is get certified in SSL; I notice that isn't on your resume." Now you know what you have to do to get the job.

I know, you are a coach and there are coaches but is this just a million personal experiences put together through the centuries in an organized way? Is it like small talk; we either have it or we don't?
@TheWizardOfWords4 жыл бұрын
1rocknroy, you've asked a complicated question. This is how I see myself and my training: I try to take the lessons I've learned through reading, studying, experiencing, and watching-- and put them into words, scripts and techniques that would be immediately helpful to others in their struggles with personal and professional relationships. You had it right-on when you referred to "a million personal experiences put together through the centuries in an organized way." However--it's not small talk and it's not a case of either having it or not. Remember, we talk about communication SKILLS not communication TALENTS. Most people aren't born great communicators. They BECOME great communicators, and I believe this is done by learning and then practicing what we learn. That is why it is my goal to give people communication/relationship tools they can immediately learn, practice and put to use to make their lives better, and to make the world a better place as well. I do not so much come up with new ideas, as I take proven ideas and present them in my unique way--hopefully with clarity and honesty. I hope that at least partially answers that complicated question! And thanks for asking it. Dan

Fantastic video!!! Hi Dan, I live in Mexico where they practice age discrimination. There's also a law in Mexico that 90% of all applicants who receive a job position must be Mexican. I am an expat who is from New York City. I've lived here for 12 years, but no one wants to hire me, probably because of age discrimination or the law about only hiring 90% Mexicans. I am a professional Dance Accompanist. In other words, I play piano for Ballet and Modern Dance Classes. Futhermore, I compose for dance concerts. My CV is world-class and for 30 years I have played for the greatest ballerinas and dance companies in the world. I will have to speak in Spanish during the interview, so that is a bit difficult. However, I have had my C.V. professionally translated into Spanish. I plan on using your phrase "What do I need to do to get this job?" translated into Spanish. But how do I knock down the door of age discrimination, and discrimination based on place of birth, here? Currently, I cannt afford to return to the U.S.A. P.S. Ballet has its own vocabulary (generally French). I am fluent in all ballet terminology. Thanks. Laurence

Laurence, as someone with 25 years living in both MX and the U.S. I have one tip for you in re Mexican employment. Do it through networking. Join any club or organization where you might meet someone who could introduce you to the right people. My first job here was teaching at University Autonoma, and I got that through networking and then preparing properly for the interview. I hope you are in Guad or Mexico City or some other major Mexican city, given your profession.

I mean I've always had to wait a few days for the phone call with a job offer. I wouldn't say the chances are almost zero if you don't have an offer before you walk out. They probably have other interviews scheduled etc. Edit 1: Regarding "What do I need to do to get this job", I like it, it shows courage, but I probably wouldn't use that. They might ask me to do something that's...out of my comfort zone 😂 Edit 2: Ok being serious this time. What do you think of phrasing it as, "How do you know you've found the best candidate?"
@TheWizardOfWords4 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little exaggeration for effect, Mod, but I can assure you that if you are "the one" the interviewer generally knows it there and then. In re edit 1: Maybe you want to leave your comfort zone once in awhile? To get that job deal sealed?? In re edit 2: I think that's a powerful question. If you use it, let me know the results.

Hey Dan, I'm interviewing on Monday for a job as a Pottery Teacher. I've been teaching adults with learning difficulties for 2 years but most of my 70 students per week needed my help in wedging (kneading) and rolling their clay, which has given me tendonitis, so I'm going for a job teaching able-bodied adults. I am going part time so that I have time and energy to grow my own pottery practice. The organisation sent me a detailed job description so I know what I need to do to get the job. I figure that my having limited professional experience is what may prevent me getting the job. Any tips you can give would be much appreciated ☺️
@TheWizardOfWords2 жыл бұрын
Tell the interviewer exactly what you told me. Make it clear that what you lack in experience, you make up for in knowledge of pottery and dedication to teaching that skill to others. Experience isn't everything; knowledge of your craft is equally important.

Ive never had problems getting job offers but it's definitely getting tougher out there (God help us all with the advent of "bias programmed into the software" AI and video interviews). Employers ghosting candidates after interviewing is definitely on the rise, sadly. It's downright disrespectful and perfectly reasonable to withdraw your application if you feel employers are messing you around; it's important to know your worth, just as in dating I reckon. I will also disengage from recruitment agencies if I feel they aren't representing me appropriately. The interview is an opportunity for BOTH parties to establish if they'd like to work together. Its no longer a one way street where the employer holds all the power. Ive never personally used any of the examples suggested in your video Dan, but may well try in future. Im not keen on being too keen so always come from a place of curiosity about the company, the culture,the role and potential challenges. I don't want to be in a position where im having to prove why im a good hire or convince anyone of my value. There is sometimes a tendency, on part of employers, to focus on what a candidate can't do as opposed to what they can bring to the table so it's easy to feel like you're positioned to fight for a job. I've learned in those cases its best to direct them fervently towards their often false and limiting beliefs. Like, if that's what you believe, then yes, you're right to believe it, I'm not gonna argue with you. Good luck. It's also worth remembering that if they (the employer)don't get me they don't deserve me. Just as in dating. We can't be a match with everyone, and that's OK.

I adore you, Dan; you give sound, actionable advice with humour and sensitivity. My partner is technically a genius but struggles with executive presence and Ive suggested he watch you. Believe me, I never do things like that! But on this topic, part of me loves this advice and I am currently job seeking … but I’m British and I fear it may be perceived as somewhat “OTT” and, dare I say, “American” for a British interviewer. Any advice around such cultural nuance? Am also keen to hear from anyone who works with Brits and what they think?
@TheWizardOfWords3 жыл бұрын
October Sun, you are correct that people should be aware of tactics, attitudes, and body language that may have to be adapted to fit their culture. The British are, shall we say, a bit more straight-laced than Americans. So if you feel you should tone it down just a bit--go ahead and do that :) However the basic principles of always speaking with kindness, and "the opposite of weakness is love" apply to all cultures--or should I say they SHOULD.

@@TheWizardOfWords Thank you so much for the speedy reply Dan! As for speaking with kindness, absolutely agree with you on that one, 110%! I actually used the "what concerns you might have.." and this might surprise you, but while I saw the look of shock on their faces (there was more than one recruiter there) I could almost see those gears grinding in their heads to haste a response out. The one that was supposed to become my boss promptely went for my response to that cliché "your weaknesses" question. BTW I threw in your 4 personality types when asked about the strenghs/weaknesses. I realised I might have rubbed the guy the wrong way that moment when I was talking about office personalities and I'm not even from the HR field, but dared to do so in front of his head of HR in the room. He might have seen me as a know-it-all-time-waster or even as a threat. We all know these kinds of shallow bosses. Just a guess though. my personality wouldn't stand in my way to that particular job but hey.. if they don't like u, there's no way around it, right? Lol In retrospect, I'm glad I lost that one. At least now I know what to expect and will tweak things before the last power question. Thank you for all your work Dan!

Hi Dan, I enjoy your training courses. They are fun and useful! I'm looking for a job in the Animation sector which is pretty special in the sense that you don't know whether to present yourself casual and chill or formal. I try to maintain the balance. I had been asking the question: "what would be the no 1 skill you'd expect from me while performing this particular task?" It seems to have the same efficiency. I actually started to use it after watching your courses. Now...In my field, it's pretty particular, because I can ask: what might be that particular thing for which I would not be a good candidate?" And they'll answer...do you know 3d? no...you don't....and 3d takes time to learn....at list 3 years...or they would say "you are perfect for the job but we don't know if we'll receive the funds for this project...so, we'll let you know. But if you don't, know it's not your fault, we just don't have any project fit for your style." And after a while, other people get hired just because it's a small world and they are between them, friends. And even if you don't have the funds, but for a friend, you can make an effort or an exception. It goes like this...what advice would you have for me so that I would express my passion and determination in an elegant and business way. Thank you!
@TheWizardOfWords4 жыл бұрын
My advice is to keep doing what you are doing. When you ask about the number one skill--great question, btw--if you don't have it, you know right there and then. If you do have it, keep gently pushing. Tell them you know you are a good fit for the job, and have not only the skills but the passion and desire to do the best possible job. And then ask them if there is any reason they would NOT choose you for the position :)
