It was emotianal as it was the 50 th anverisity of the commitements of engineer troops to Vietnam. I have since that visit aqiured a vietnamese dauther - in law. Vietnamese is super easy to learn, is Latin alphabets based too. Thanks for the beautiful video. We dreamers have to make up our mind to let go of everything else and go there before it becomes unaffordable. I gotta know some former GIs who moved permanently to my town in VN recently. Mine is near Saigon and does not have much yet attracting more Americans to move there due to the ever rocketing costs back in the States. Milk is about 8 USD a gallon in VN. No wonder ice cream is so expensive.

Hey Barry; it's nice to have come across your videos. I'm John, a VN-American from Saigon who left the country in 75. The wife's side has a big family in VT, which we had visited a few times since then. We'll be back there in about 10 days, but only for a day; otherwise I could come right up to your door and knock on it. I know exactly how to find it. :) I can find my way around town. The last time, we spent a week there; always love that place on the weekdays, that's for sure. Could have had a couple of beers with you if that was the case this time. I'm not 60 yet, but I can guess what you were doing in Nam back in 69. If you decide to retire there; maybe I can catch you next year. Keep enjoying the life.

I'm glad you come to love VT. I wouldn't mind retiring, or spending some time out of the year there. I used to have a GI friend (7 year older), but unfortunately he passed away a few years ago due to cancer. I had always wanted to take him back to visit the country; he had shared with me a lot of things about those old days as we were not just drinking buddies. He even entrusted me with a couple of albums as he thought I'm the only one who could understand what it all means. By the way, I understand that there are a number of Aussies and Kiwis in town. Have you made any such friends?

Barry, like your vids. Instead of being *blab-a-thon travelogues* , they're adventures of a man in a new country trying to figure out where things are, local customs and a difficult language. =Just the way I'd have to do it. Totally laid back wherever you go. Try the beach bar for a 100% relaxed atmosphere. Du Duc for a bit more lively (girls sometimes dancing on the bar in very very short skirts) cucumber, or hot lips if you think you can beat a woman at pool

Bet small Doug !....that's what they do because pool is gratis. If you like seafood, don't use the restaurants (although good) pointed out by Rider on the coast. Use the restaurants slightly away from it where they have live pools you can pick and choose from. A seafood feast cooked with our choice of seasonings (mostly garlic chilli and galangal) along with 4 beers was £14 sterling (31000 vnd). You will not regret going. Have fun bud !!!!

Most people come on a 90 day visa and then if they like it they get a 1 year visa. You can get a 1 year single entry or a 1 year multiple entry. Up to you. And they can learn English.. :-)

Great video, lots of information. Well appreciated. Best thing about your video is it's not heavily edited to look "cute" or funny, it's just you and you going about your life. Thanks for this adult-type video; so tired of all those ones with the music and the emojis popping up all over the place. One thing about your clothes.. perhaps consider either asking one of those "big" Vietnamese guys where they shop (perhaps write it down on a paper beforehand) or maybe find a local tailor who can sew shirts which probably would be what you would pay for off-the-rack shirts perhaps? Anyway good luck with your search and keep the videos coming :)

Thanks for the kind words. I got some flak from some people saying my videos weren't professional enough. I told them it is a hobby not a career. I found a shop that sells clothes for big men so I'm good now. Never was a big man back home....haha.

I am guessing you were close to 60 when you were in Thailand. If you picked the Thai language at that age, then you are very good with languages and will pick up the Viet language in time. After age 30 is when languages become difficult for all.
@vungtaurider28647 жыл бұрын
Actually I was a little older than 60. Vietnamese has a lot of tonal inflections. That's what is hard for me. I have a tin ear for music and it is kind of the same thing. I don't hear the inflections as easy as some people do. It's ok. I get by just fine.
@eddenoy3217 жыл бұрын
I am sure you get by fine. The fact that you are a native English speaker means that people will often seek you out to speak with you, assist you, and even invite you into their homes. You can do likewise and invite them into your home. What is better than that ? A superb way to spend our golden years. You cannot do that in the USA. Everyone fears one another.
@vungtaurider28647 жыл бұрын
I'm sure if I had a lot of money I could have a nice retirement in the US. But since I don't I had the choice of living out my days in a cheap apartment with no disposable income. Just curious how you have dealt with the motorbike license. I’ve heard that the US IDL (IDP) is not valid in Vietnam as it does not comply with the 1968 treaty. My AAA permit clearly shows 1949 treaty on the front and Vietnam does not recognize this. This is also an issue with S. Korea, Aussie and a few other countries that did not sign 1968 treaty.

Let's just say many people do not have licenses. Expats and locals. But if you are concerned you can get a license. Have to take a written test and drive thru some cones.

So nice to see a sane country. Great to see all the motorcycles. In Canada they've made motorcycles an all but un-affordable luxury,,,with crazy insurance rates,,,, for a short riding season. I ride but I've downsized my bike to 250 cc to make it reasonable to insure. And in my area the traffic solution is to put another stop-light every 1/4 mile. Traffic is stopped a lot,,,, with people texting,,,,and soon pot will be legal,,,, to make it even worse. Stoned texting zombies. It's been proven in studies that your Vietnam kind of traffic flow works better.

I don't get VA benefits. I live on SSI. But to answer your question. I don't know if the VA will direct deposit to a foreign account. I have my funds direct deposited to my bank in the US. I don't trust my bike to go to the countryside. Maybe later if I can get a newer one.

First off why do you keep looking left before making a right turn? That will be a very bad thing to do in Saigon. Just enter the street and turn right, the cross traffic will get out of your way. Vietnamese is very hard because a slight tone difference on a letter will make a completely different word.
@vungtaurider28646 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you why I look both ways. Sometimes there will be someone driving the wrong direction in the lane. I don't know about Saigon but they do it here all the time.
@i1baja886 жыл бұрын
The wrong way traffic upsets me when there isn’t any obvious resin for it other than being lazy. At times I will drive the wrong way for a very short Distance. When I first came to Saigon 14 years ago the traffic lights were just an suggestion even the police didn’t stop for a red lights, glad things have changed. Still one of the most dangerous things to do is to go through a green light, you must keep looking both ways. Do what you must to stay safe.

Ah Americans and roundabouts equals confussion, chaos and scrapped chrome mufflers.
@vungtaurider28647 жыл бұрын
Haha. We actually have 2 in my town in the US. They were put in a few years ago because they thought they would look nice. I hated them. But it's different in Asia. There are no rules. And the chaos works. I'm actually getting used to it.
@jennycortes17926 жыл бұрын
In U.K where they are very common, we just give-way to vehicles approaching roundabout from our right-side. You'd think this would be the opposite in U.S and Vietnam, because you drive on the right. Yet in vietnam this rule of thumb dosen't seem to apply and it's usually huge amounts of caution/confusion. Do I go before you. Shall I wait for you...etc..

Vung Tau Rider I’m liquidating all my crap so I can travel light... you don’t need much in Vietnam for sure. So what type of Moto works best in Vietnam.guess I’ll just buy a used. Unless new is not much more. Sure appreciate the advice tau rider
@vungtaurider28646 жыл бұрын
You'll probably end up with a Honda or Yamaha. Electric start, auto tranny. Unless you prefer a Vespa type scoter. You don't want a big bike because the traffic forces you to do some quick turns and quick stops.

Do many Vietnamese speak French? If so it might be easier and much faster to learn some basic French. 🤷♂️ How’s the sunburn and air pollution there?

You seem like a nice guy but I have some constructive criticism for how you behave in your adopted country. You are bordering on the Ugly American. I have been traveling abroad for almost 40 years so have seen how Americans can behave and know why many people from Europe and Asia have disdain for us. Try assimilating! If you are going to barge into someone’s store pushing a camera in their face then at least try to speak their language. It is THEIR country! You are a guest! Show some respect. Just because you are American does not give you the right to behave like you are living in America. Think about it. Say you live in Santa Fe, Carmel or some other resort area and you owned a bank or clothing store and a Chinese man comes in with a video in your face shouting at you in Chinese. It just does NOT happen. All the immigrants I know in America always try to speak English. I believe us American expats have a duty to show a better side of the American people while we are living abroad. I have always tried to greet someone in their native language even it is just “hello” or “sorry I can not speak your language”. This is NOT a difficult thing! Don’t assume they speak English. Even if they do, a greeting in their language shows respect and it is the polite thing to do. Never ever forget, it is their country.

I think you're being too critical. I have always been respectful of the people and customs of the countries I visit. I have gotten into altercations with foreigners when I see them mistreating a local. I think the only time I might have been a little rude was when I went into the clothing store. Most of the other businesses I go into all the time and they know me so I am informal with them as they are with me. Also when I'm wearing the hat cam I sound a lot louder than I really am so it seems like I'm being loud and obnoxious. It's funny because I am actually pretty soft spoken. If you ask any Vietnamese who knows me they will tell you I am a nice guy and respectful to their culture.
@-cat84917 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I was being too critical, after all I only watched the one video. No doubt a small sample of your life in Vietnam. Part of it is my frustration watching Americans over the years. If I had heard you use one Vietnamese word I probably wouldn’t have said anything. Watching your interaction with the locals in the clothing store is why I was so critical. That segment speaks for itself.

I speak almost fluent Thai but for some reason (aged brain?) I am having trouble with Vietnamese. Actually I think it's because I always had a girlfriend in Thailand so I used the language daily at home. Because I live alone I only use it when I go out and so I forget it the next day. A lot harder language also. I can say a few words of course but very few. It's been frustrating because I like to learn the language.

Yes it is the age. Kids can pick up languages much easier. I’ve been struggling with Italian for years. Try an app called Memrise
