Phil Moufarrege sent me here and I'm grateful for that. These "secrets" are actually social tips that can help your carrier in any field you're focusing on. You should always zoom out and see the big picture of your life, don't focus on this one thing like promoting your cd or getting gigs. Be attentive to your surroundings. Thank you Graham.

I kind of disagree. I would say chose carefully the people you serve without any contracts. Of course collaborate with the cool guys, but many managers and influential people in music business count on underpaid musicians who think they build their network when serving them. This rule may apply for workers in Studio etc. but if you are an artist, you should not make any big compromises for others! Sometimes there can be an coexistence and symbiotic relationship, but mostly everyone is on his/her own and in the end the first rule stated here is above it all: Be seen.

I think that he is talking about the networking part. If you had to choose between you or someone else, the anwser is obvious. But, by putting yourself out there as a likeble person offering help to others, you will stand out compared to all the other artists that are only focused on their own career. Even if you are just pretending.

That's some of the best advice you've ever given!! I really got a lot off of that!! I'm a big Beatles fan - and have noticed over the years that they had an incredible reputation for being generous and giving during their career. Instead of being hateful and scared of their opposition -- they actually threw parties and did favors for the various bands around them. When the Monkees came to London -- the Beatles had a welcome party for them. Lennon and his first wife Cynthia actually had Mike Nesmith and his wife stay at their house while they were in England. Really good advice, Graham. Nicely done, man!!!

This week ive reached out to help with potential masters on a friends label, and reached out to another friend to help with their Alzheimer's event. Also locally making note to attend another show in week and a half to get my face back in the scene here. Loved this video Graham. Been watching these for a while, and this is not only super on point, but exactly what I personally needed to hear, cause its exactly what I HAVEN'T been doing. I have been that selfish producer/dj looking to strike my gigs back up, but youre 100% right. No one is gonna do that unless you scratch their back first. Big ups dude!

I do a live Facebook show every other week for my friends and family. I take requests (as much as I'm able to) and play for about an hour and a half. I don't post a PayPal link, and about the only thing I do is let people know about upcoming events and things. They started off slow, but I'm averaging 1000 to 2000 views a week doing it! And taking requests and learning songs that people ask me for REALLY makes them feel special. Not only that, but I am adding SO MUCH to my repertoire, and attendance at shows is rising as well. All it costs me is some of my time. I love your channel! I have learned so much on here that I use all the time!

One thing I am going to do to be seen is to start my KZbin channel and change the way I view people around me . To not be on the defensive all the time and to to think more positively . Getting out my apartment on my off days from work and when I have free time would be a good Idea. How I would serve people is to be more courteous than i already am and humble down . Have fun and show people that no matter where they are in life they can enjoy their life .

to be honest I have been playing live for decades, I got national press, played some major events, a lot of local press, music equipment endorsements, I've helped a ton of people (and always enjoyed it and still do it), but after decades of this I am actually less seen, less booked, less everything but I am a better artist. I still believe that a BIG portion of success is either knowing someone hooked up (because I have seen that a LOT of times), or you are just lucky. That being said I do believe that being a good human and an artists that gives back carries it's own rewards, but frankly only to ones self. I gave up on trying to be anything but a guy that continues to be the best I can be with my music, and making it for myself. Yes I am somewhat jaded with the whole music industry, and people in general but that doesn't mean I don't continually try and help other artists in every way I can. I guess it just wasn't for me, it seems people don't care about my music on a large enough scale.

Another great video, thank you Graham. As a former professional singer and working for a long time in musical theatre, I can't tell you how important your two "secrets" are. If people don't know you, well, they simply don't know you, and if they don't like you, it doesn't matter how good you are. It sounds cheesy to say "help yourself by helping others", but it is true, good comes to those who do good. Truth is: I've gotten jobs over others who outperformed me, but were less liked. Being a father now, retired from stage 15 years ago, I work as a photographer these days. The rules however are exactly the same. As for "giving", I don't feel it's something we "have to do", it's something we should "enjoy to do". For myself, I have no concrete plan for this week, but my team and I are working on a new weekly youTube show (to be launched sometime later this year), to do exactly that: To help people. Free education, quick and to the point. The "to be seen" part might be an off-product of it, but it is not the motivator. The motivation is to share what I've learned over the years, and simply to share the passion. Long blurb, sorry. Keep the good stuff coming, and - if I can help you in any way, let me know.

Hi Graham. Loren here. It was great to talk to you at Hybrid. Hope I didn't interrupt anything important when I saw you at NAMM. Have your ears stopped ringing? Great advice in this video. I made a bunch of connection and a few friends at NAMM too. Several times I almost walked by someone important to me to meet and I stopped and turned back and stepped up. Just like I did with you. It's a good thing. And yes, offering something is the best way to move forward. Give and you shall receive is what the good word says. It's not religious, it's wisdom. ---One thing to be seen is this post for example. And touching base with those I met at NAMM. Many already gave good responses. Building a network. Been invited to other studios too. And been invited back to NAMM.

Great video Graham, This has totally been my mindset since I started and I'm beginning to see the fruits of my servant attitude. I am first and foremost a professional musician of 20+ years and have been into the home-recording thing since the days of the Tascam 4-track but have recently gotten into engineering and mixing in a big way. I started a small recording business offering the first demo free for all customers. That includes all tracking, mixing and mastering. Well now I'm seeing people respond to my Facebook and Soundcloud pages for my studio and have hired me to produce several projects for them. I'm now getting paid to engineer ! People haven't even asked for the free demo when they contact me, they just like my attitude and approach and are interested in working with someone like that. It's definitely the way to go in the music industry because it's so much more who you know and more importantly who knows and likes you than what you know. I love your videos and have learned and progressed so much because of the knowledge you share, keep up the good work. God Bless

I want to say first that this IS great advice, and the importance of serving others to maximize your visibility cannot be understated. As a matter of fact, that's how I had the opportunity to meet you and contribute a little bit to the Creative Live master class. That being said, I've recently found myself becoming more and more reclusive and cynical after spending more than a couple years trying to be the patron saint of my own local music scene; I lugged gear, ran the monitors/foh board, attended rehearsals, band meetings and writing sessions, organized crowdfunding campaigns, and even helped a few of them record their first releases @ some VERY nice studios where I'd earned some free time. ALL pro bono. I understand that people change, bands fall apart, and life sometimes gets in the way, but what really has me unwilling to be philanthropic these days is that every one of those projects fell apart for no other reason than a lack of work ethic. I had no expectations of them to make any reciprocal gestures, but I still value my time, which meant I contributed most to the bands I had the most faith in, and even they at the end of the day decided unilaterally that it wasn't a worthwhile investment of time and energy, and I'm not willing to make anymore sacrifices for people who are just going to lie down a quit. The rest of the artists in our scene either self sustaining and don't need what I have to offer, or they're just casuals doing it for fun who simply don't want it. I currently work an underpaid job @ guitar center teaching music production to teenagers, and while that job is stressful, it feels like a worthwhile endeavor because many of my students are still young and enthusiastic and I have no doubts that some of them will go on to do great things. Beyond that though, I feel like helping others has been a distraction from getting my own projects off the ground, but I constantly wonder whether my feelings are justied or if I'm just being jaded. When I was younger, more optimistic and had fewer bills to pay, I was more inclined toward the idea of being the tide that would raise all ships, but now all I want to do is ignore all the fish in this small pond of a music scene, and focus on building my project til it's the size of a Kaiju and then just blowing everybody else outta the water :-P At a certain point serving others requires you to insert too much of yourself into their lives, and while altruism is a noble quality, trying to make yourself responsible for other peoples success is an exercise in futulity

Hey graham what grabbed me most in this video was when you spoke to being seen . At shows at naam etc .and how you spoke to that .... I was just telling a friend of mine " you couldn't pay me to go out these days " as I am very introverted and Jadore' my alone time to create / produce / think . I was wondering if you would possibly do a video similar to this talk through of your best practice/ experiences ; both positive and negative on ...planning tour .... examples of conversations with booking managers / festival booking .... on brand venue choices... And right practices in engaging with venues and performance opportunities as they come Also the most effective way to organize a my personal "on brand "tour diy style My main question in Example below are : Scheduling tour Best practice when acting as your own manager and how to organize -Tour venues - out of state trade for trade exposure shows Just really setting and sending your music out on the road for optimal exposure while being inclusive with the people you meet along the way and as you said ... do by doing and having something to offer that's beneficial on all sides . Hope that made some sense ...🙈 I love your tips on online presence and how you push us to be our own brand on our OWN ! Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for providing this sense of community in what has been and as I'm growing to find is sometimes a pretty lonely journey . Xx Miele ukee (mee el ee you kee ;).

Great video, It is a philosophy I have tried to live before doing music and while doing music and have had far more negative than positive out of this, where people take advantage, but each time you learn and adapt. Excelent!! I will make a live session in the radio this week with my band, also we have a gig on saturday near downtown (in Mexico city). I started to help a friend to do some songs of her, I´ll record, mix it and produce it, and I feel glad about it. Thank you so much for your advises, I´m always learning a lot from your tutorials. Cheers from Mexico!!

Thank you Graham for such valuable insights! A friend of mine who is a professional musician is working on new songs, i've just offered my collaboration, I'm going to mix them in my home studio. Beyond the technical stuff this bonds friends who help each other

Awesome content. This gave me some great insight. I am just beginning an ambitious journey to become an Audio Engineer with the intent to promote the Portland, Maine music scene. I currently live outside the city but I am moving very soon for the reasons you mentioned. Being thirty minutes outside the city I have still gone to at least one or two local shows a week to talk to artists about what I am aiming to do. With this advice I realize I need to go about it differently, instead of rushing through my plan on how I can help them I just need to say “How can I help you guys, I want to get you more shows and more play time.” Once I plan to be going to shows at least three to four times a week, putting up flyers and really getting my name out there. I have huge hopes for this city and as time progress I hope to start creating a vlog showcasing the scene and demonstrating the talent that there is here. I sincerely thank you for this video, what I need to do to accomplish my goals is much clearer. Maybe Ill see you at NAMM one day.

Good advice! This week, I'm going to start my songwriting videos for tips on songwriting. Then I'm going to talk to a producer I considered working with, give him a compliment and make myself available to help on any projects he may have in the future. Thanks! I subscribed because this stuff is clean and to the point. Appreciate that much!

This week, I am releasing two albums I've had mostly finished just sitting around and I'm posting then publicly on my facebook, etc. I am going to ask a musician that I know and admire, that I've worked with before on MY projects, and ask them if they have any of their own stuff I could record for them or something. Thanks, Graham!!

Hey Graham! I am going to try and reach out to more artists in the NC area and see if I can serve them in any way, whether that's promoting their music on my social media, or doing some cool covers with them. Thanks for the video!

These are the type of subtle motivation videos I love from your channel Graham. I've already made a list of personal and business music "to do's" for this week. I will be reaching out to local studios and/or fellow musicians to see how I may be able to assist them. That's my focus this week. Thank you!

1) Im going to start releasing more music because I´ve been keeping my music for myself for a long time now... 2) and im going to star helping others with their jobs... like a friend of mine that has a audio visual company!!

Hi Graham, I love your videos, been watching them for a few years now. In response to your question: I am definitely understanding more now the importance of being seen. Recently I have been quite active on instagram (mostly just posting pictures of stuff I like) and figuring out how to use hashtags. People started commenting and following me, now I'm up to about 200 followers. I used this momentum to promote and release a free instrumental tape (I'm a producer) and noticed some good results. Like yourself, I'm not a naturally extroverted person, but I enjoy being around good people and serving others. This week in order to be seen more I will create my first official KZbin video! Thanks Graham for the inspiration.

This week I will be attending NAMM in Nashville TN! Maybe I will see you there. I just moved to Nashville as a songwriter performer. Wish I would have had your advice here last night. I went to the Basement (music venue) to see Remmi and Nawas perform. I saw Remmi after the show and was going to ask her about opening up for her in the future but LIKE YOU JUST SAID, LOL there were already people handing her demo information and asking her those questions. I didn't want to bug her after I saw her go through that. After seeing this video I would have approached her asking if I could hand out flyers for her next show. Which I would enjoy anyway, cause she's dope, haha. To serve someone else this week I will call my buddy Matt who lives here and see if I can help his band out. Recommend this site to people that might need it and try to see who I can be of service to at the NAMM show this Saturday. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS. IF I SEE YOU AT NAMM I'LL SAY, HOW MAY I HELP YOU!! Haha, and I could actually maybe help. Check out CROWD MUSIC, it is a new model for the music industry coming out of Nashville. CROWD ACTUALLY PAYS FANS TO PROMOTE MUSIC AND PAYS ARTISTS. I don't know how this might help you, but you seem like a very smart guy and could probably figure something out. Hope to see you at NAMM!! Justin

I’m playing saxophone, I just picked up this instrument for about half year, and still learning from my teacher (he is a very good player and already been few thousand steps ahead, I can feel that my teacher looked up on me as my progress is not bad) ... I seldom tell people that I know, whether it’s friend or colleagues nor doing posting on social media that, I am playing this instrument. I always thought that I have to first be talented and master playing sax ASAP before letting people know that I am playing saxophone. because I felt that I have not master it and just save the shame. But I am meeting my ex-colleague this weekend, I’ll have to tell them that I am playing saxophone, and if they are interested, I can play some songs for them. AND I am going to post something on social media, letting people know that I actually play sax ... 💪🏻💪🏻

I watched a very similar video from a Berkley course on youtube where the guy said basically the exact same thing haha and that video inspired me to learn more on the subject (thats how I found this video). One thing? Tomorrow I made plans to go to an open mic hiphop show. I've been rapping in my basement for years getting nowhere but producing really good music. This advice is so helpful I gaurantee thats why i'm not making it anywhere with my music. Nobody knows me im invisible! Tomorrow im gonna absolutely destroy the mic and meet as many other artists and producers as I can
