Can't believe that they are still serving that goulash in bread at the same spot where I used to have it back in my Belgrade student days, some 35 years ago.. I remember how we would come after the lessons and take it outside of that shop window. Thanks for the memory.

Popara used to be poor people's dish, that old people remember from the times when they couldn't afford anything better. They used to make it of old bread, water and a little grease, if they had some milk to add, it made it richer. No wonder that with all those new recipes and ingredients it's become a fine dish now.

Mora biti iskljucivo stari hljeb.Domaci hljeb.

Actually, Belgrade, the original Belgrade, wasn't part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But the part on the other side of Sava river was, where city of Zemun is located, and Zemun was later incorporated into Belgrade, I believe it was in 1934.

The general type of coffee enjoyed in Serbia is not called Turkish coffee any longer; now the predominant term is "domestic coffee" (домаћа кафа). Besides, that type of coffee is unknown in Turkey. Even the Serbs of Muslim religious denomination do not make and have it.

I wouldn’t say that cabbage sarma is of turkish origin. Grapeleaf sarma, yes, dolma, yes but Sarma with fermented cabbage is just called Sarma but it was made before turks came to balkans because you will see this kind of „sarma“ in all slavic people bit with a different name, for example GOŁĄBKI in polish and so on. I don’t think that turkic people knew what cabbage was before they came in to contact with european people, because cabbage was native to europe.
@rokgoesaround
@rokgoesaround Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Agreed and thanks for your info. I more ment that the dish (not necesarily inveted by turkish people) spread through the area with the spread of Ottoman empire.

Fun fact, he mentioned that a lot of the dishes have an Ottoman origin, but the difference is that Serbians mostly make it with pork. Serbia had a long and rich history before the Ottoman invasion and Serbians used to eat mostly beef and lamb, but when the Ottomans conquered Serbia they would take almost all of the grains, produce and meat from the farmers and leave barely enough for them to survive to grow crops for the next year. Turks being Muslim don’t eat pork, so Serbians figured if they want to “stick it” to the invaders they should start keeping pigs and eating pork. There was big business smuggling pigs into occupied parts of Serbia over the river at night. Even thou centuries have passed pork is still the most consumed meat. So, if you’re visiting and you don’t eat pork, always ask what kind of meat they’re using. So, when we’re talking about minced meat, some places only do pork, some places only do beef, some places mix the two together, and some places do all three, so just ask before ordering and everything’s gonna be okay. 😊

This isn't food we'd eat every day, all day. Most of people still have a habit of eating homemade dishes that are packed with vegetables, much less meat than presented, soups, stews, casseroles. Every meal (even breakfast) is served with vegetable salads and pickles, depending on the season.
